"The Matrix" Website Updated 163

feelafel writes: "Corona's Upcoming Films movie news site reports that the official Matrix website, www.whatisthematrix.com, has been "reloaded" today. Click on the keyboard twice, and enter the password "reload" to get to the new material. There's QuickTime VRs, on the set shots and most likely a slew of new hidden stuff. Happy searching."

Wow...I'm the first to admit that it's a pretty site, and there's probably a lot of fun stuff to do, but there's also something to be said for usable navigation. I wish I had time to click every single little screen to try to find some of the good stuff...

Try sitting in a "web design" college class. Where the motto is "if it loads in under a day its incomplete".

For example, in one lab we had to use CSS stuff. Which is all good [of course I've completely forgotten how todo them now since I never use em]... anyways. I did a rather plain webpage that did use CSS styles and anyways the teacher said I didn't work "hard enough" on it.

Most people in my class think that "flash animations" are stndard HTML elements and no site is complete without them.

Oh more on point, WTF, what's up with the stupid movie? When is it comming out?

According to the IMDB [imdb.com], both The Matrix Reloaded [imdb.com] (the second one) and The Matrix Revolutions [imdb.com] (the third one) are coming out in 2003.

I originally thought they were coming out this year, but I suppose not.

      • I would have flipped out and killed everyone in the room, starting with the instructor. I work plenty hard on "plain" pages that have good cross-platform code.

When I read the Matrix site news here my first thought was, "you couldn't PAY me to visit that site, it'll be pure aggravation."

Heck, I haven't even visited fox.com/24 and I love the show. They drill the URL into my brain every chance they get but I know it'll be a load of Flash crap.
      • Not in my department. The classes I've taken have focused on usable design and platform compatibility. I now have a deep hatred for Netscape 4.x, so much DHTML doesn't work right in it. Unfortunately we ran out of time to get into accessibility so all the class heard was early comments to make sure to have ALT tags on your images.
      • So sadly true. The worst part is half the time they want you to use some P.O.S. WYSIWYG editor like front page or dreamweaver. Sad.. very, very, very sad.

I dropped the class I was in after they refused to not make me use either dreamweaver/frontpage and I insited on not only coding it by hand but *shock* validating my HTML with the W3C's validator. The teacher was none too happy when I pointed out that most of hte crap he was teaching wasn' valid HTML standards and shouldn't be used. Oh well. Hooray for college education.
      • First mistake: believing college professors know anything about the Web (some do, most don't). If you want to learn Web development, go intern at some company that's actually doing it.

Second mistake: believing large companies like AOL-Time Warner know anything about the Web (I've done outsourced work for them and other giants... they don't have a clue)

Anyway, if you don't feel like playing their stupid "find the right page and type our secret password" game, just go here [warnerbros.com].

Seriously its a site built around entertainment, let them entertain you. Ambiguity is kind of fitting for a movie like "The Matrix".

Criminy, that was one of the worst web sites I've seen.

Marketting seems to have devolved to pretty pictures, and has nothing to do with useful information.

Well, get a clue - the reason I buy something is because I have some information that makes me believe that my life will be improved in some fashion as a result of the purchase. This site does nothing to give me the information I need to make a purchase decision. And NO, I am NOT going to download 5 plug-ins either!

How will buying a ticket to a movie improve your life? Maybe because you'll get some enjoyment from the pretty pictures on the screen.

I think movies are going to have to start making two websites. Requiem for a Dream [requiemforadream.com]'s web site got me thinking about this. It's a beautiful site that adapts the movie to the web medium well, but it's got no information. You'd think the makers of an independent film who have to struggle to pay the bills would want people to know where to see or buy the damn thing. Even the distributor, Artisan Entertainment, only linked to the above site.

I'm all for Flash as a medium for creative expression, but sometimes I just want some info on a white background.

  • Does anybody have a REALLY good feeling about this movie? I do. I think that this is one sequel that is going to rock its fans just as much as the original. These guys know what they have to live up to, and I think they're going to do it!

Unlike Star Wars, which could go either way... I'm quite confident in this one, and have been from the start.

    • You do? Really?

I (and some of my friends) have a really bad feeling about this movie. The basic idea works like this: "A prequel would be cool/decent/ok/whatever the opion of the first movie was, but a sequel will suck rancid goat nuts."

Why? Well, let's put it this way, take away the special effects from the first movie, and you're left with a plot with huge holes in it and a bunch of heavy handed Biblical metaphors.

Now, put the special effects back in, and you have an above-average action movie (Ok, it was WAY above average at the time, but not any more.) Which brings us to the next problem: The special effects aren't so 'special' anymore. Everyone's done it, everybody's seen it. There's no 'woah, that was cool' when we get a slow-bullet time effect or the sudden freeze, rotate camera, & continue effect. We've seen it beaten to death, propped up to seem like it's still alive, and beaten some more.

To sum up: Matrix sequel doesn't look too good IMHO.
(Especially since I've heard that Keanu will fly in this movie. If there's any part of the movie that made me want to groan, it was that flying sequence at the end. Both unneccesary & horrible!)
