Warner Brothers Announce The Matrix: Special Edit

Kartik3 writes "IGN.com is reporting that Warner Bros. is releasing a 2-disc special edition DVD of The Matrix (loaded with extras) on April 29th and The Animatrix (An Anime series set in the world of the Matrix) DVD on June 3rd." If Animatrix is half as cool as the promo comic that was given out at the Matrix opening, I'll like it.

...I have no way of knowing: is this 2-disc set going to be substantially different from The Matrix plus The Matrix Revisited which are available now? I mean, I already have both of them. I don't see why I should have to pick up another.

I used to work (until quite recently) in the Entertainment section of a Kmart. When they released the Lord Of The Rings DVD (2 disc), people bought it in droves, and as I'm sure you'd guess, it was a best seller for months. Then once all the fuss has died down, they re release it in a special four disc edition, the extra discs containing a few average documentaries on the making of LOTR plus an extra half an hour of unseen footage. Of course, it sold like crazy again.

And anybody who was paying attention at the time would know that they announced the extended edition of the DVD at the same time as the original one.

Wouldn't it be wiser to not buy said special edition? At least half of the /.ers out there seem to truly detest the DMCA/RIAA/MPAA, so then why pad their pockets? Personally, I won't buy it. They've called me a thief though their actions and policies. I liked the Matrix, but I won't be filling the chest they dig from to buy off our representatives in the house and senate. I hope you all will do the same too.

hey people, get a grip. Are you complaining you bought their bate and switch? First off, DVD is/was a completely new market the companies are learning about. Since no one could have predicted consumer interest in behind the scenes features, we're bound to get multiple version. Now obviously they are trying to exploit the huge success of block busters, but again vote with your wallet.

You leave yourself in a bit of a pickle. Either you watched the Matrix yourself, which makes you just as pitiable, or you didn't see it and therefore aren't in a position to comment on whether we should pity others who have. Sorry, just couldn't resist. :-)

really turned me off, sold most of my collection on eBay, keeping only about 25 really essential films. This repackaged version of The Matrix won't lure me in, and frankly, as long as I get anamorphic transfers of full theatrical cuts, I could care less about all the extras. Outside of something really amazing like the additional footage they are tacking back into the LOTR films, they can keep thier multiple versions of every release. Way to cannabalize your own market and dump on your customers. Oh wait, I forgot we are dealing witha **AA group, that explains it.

Big surprise here. It's called double-dipping, studios have been doing it since DVDs first came out. Look at "Men in Black". There's a regular version (DD5.1), regular version (DD5.1 + DTS), double disc edition (DD5.1) and double disc edition (DD5.1 + dts). If that isn't the worst case scenario, I don't know what is.

How do they get away with this? Simple: it works. People buy newer editions, and as long as something sells well enough they'll continue to keep it up. The day everyone learns not to buy the same movie more than once, we'll no longer be treated like morons by the studios this way.
