Gveloper wrote in to say that x11amp is in CVS. An anonymous reader sent us a link to a Linux based synthesiser. I probably wouldn't have posted it, but I was playing with it quite a bit and its just a lot of fun. Make little drum beats and throw power chords over top of it. Whee. AbsurdSnore wrote in to tell us about a Slashdot mentioned in New Scientist's Netropolitan column for February 6th regarding the fight for ajax.org and the creation of the Domain Defense Advocate site. Anyone who thinks that the world is coming to an end is probably right as evidenced by the following three inventions: A nonymous Coward sent us the first. Pray that it is a hoax. fcw sent us number 2: the world's first (and I hope only) Ass Kicking Machine. And last of all, for the completely random, David Price sent us a link to gas powered couch Don't care about the advancement of technology? How about some bits about a a more primal topic? Knish wrote in to say that the Swimsuit Edition of Sports Illulstrated is online. Somewhat related I guess, Greedo sent us another Pseudo O'Reilly Book that you won't see in bookstores.

  • I looked through a great number of them and didn't see a single bared breast! Makes me wonder why people bother with the Swimsuit Edition when they can get Playboy et al, or, if they prefer "proper" models, see more flesh in almost any woman's magazine.

    I guess the answer has something to do with sexual guilt. The porn mags have less attractive models, because if you're wacking off you don't "deserve" to see a pretty girl. Whereas presumably the SI thing is for educational rather than masturbatory purposes, so it's okay to use beautiful women. Seems to me that the Japanese (or many mainland Europeans) are far less neurotic about this sort of thing.

    Hardly the same thing, though, is it? It's still clearly censorship. Anyway, I don't think they sell that mag in England, and there are other mags I'd buy first (because they have actual nudity, not painted over or artfully concealled).

  • A friend of mine has been bringing his electrically powered couches to Burning Man for three years now. They are a very cool geek project, because he has built custom electronic motor controllers based on the PIC embedded CPU. All the design, programming and other details are home-built. It is a much cleaner design than the gas powered one - no fumes, much lower cost to run, and it is controlled via an electric wheelchair joystick. One electric motor power each side of the couch, and it drives sorta like a tank. It can turn on a dime! And the best part is that it hardly looks like he is driving. Its top speed on a good smooth surface is about 20MPH. Another friend of his has made a couch capable of about 35MPH. There are also electrically powered end tables, Lazy Boy recliners, desk chairs, and other wild stuff. It is a an incredible fun to ride on these things.

    out from the mainstream media which is
    always doing its best to hide airbrushed
    pictures of damp identical plastic 'women'
    from the freedom-loving public.
  • Freebirth is fun. Thanks for putting it in the quickies. It can make some pretty raw (a la Aphex Twin) sounds. And it can only get better.
  • You'd have to be pretty dumb to need to have a book to look for *that*. Like me? Pooh, confused again, sorry.
  • Great item during rush-hour. Can you use this thing on the 'go'? Be sure you got the keys in your pocket before you use it! Always 'hitch' up your pants after using.

  • Maybe so... he's friendly enough. I doubt he gets 30 people a year who stop and check it out. It doesn't help that it's kind of convenient to nowhere. Still, if you make the trek, it's interesting.
