Star Wars Trailer #2 153

Zibalatz writes "The second Star Wars trailer will be appearing at Countdown to Star Wars today at around 4:00pm. There's more information on the second trailer and its non-web appearances on the site. I would strongly recommend anyone who can provide a mirror to do so. " Update: 03/09 08:24 by CT : Delayed. Isn't that always the case?

Star Wars Trailer #2

  • I made it though to the page, and it contains this note: *UPDATED ETA: TUESDAY LATE EVENING USA PST WE HAVE THE FILE! THE FILE IS CURRENTLY 4.8GB, CURRENTLY MAKING IT SMALLET THE TARGA 2000 WE WERE USING BLEW UP AND WE'RE BURNING IT ONTO 6 CDS, TAKING IT TO SOMEONE ELSE'S PC TO MAKE IT AVAILABLE TO THE WEB

It goes on to say... THE LIST OF MIRRORS WILL ALSO GO UP AT JEDINET.COM STARWARZ.COM AND NEWSDROID.COM IF YOU CANT GET ON HERE LATER TONIGHT

Maybe this calls for an update to the story on the main slashdot page?

  • heh, self-explanatory...
  • This effect was written about by Larry Niven in a series of stories regarding the effect that teleportation (ala Star Trek) would have on society. A "flash crowd" formed when everybody heard on the news about an interesting event and used their teleporters to hop in and see it. The police had to develop some interesting coping mechanisms.

The "slashdot" effect is the same thing in the web universe. (Similar stuff happens when interesting sites appear on CNN and other sources.)

  • Not even close.

Please note -- a link to a description of the trailer was posted on /. a while ago.

  • Well the countingdown.com server is having some
load difficulties. If anyone gets in please
post a short description (in text) of what the
new trailer contains -- save lots of us the
    trouble of downloading it.
  • Interesting concept, but I thought that there were some sort of fcc restrictions on transporting, since it takes up (hypotheticaly) bandwidth in the teleportation frequencies.

Interesting world when differing star trek books colide.

The military (federation) was granted its own frequencies/etc and daily house use was not advisable. No where on earth, in Captain Kirk's or Captain Picard's houses were there transporters. They always used shuttles.

  • Hey Rob, you wanted a REAL stress test for that new box of yours? Here's your chance.
  • Doesn't surprise me. That's probably the high-res, zero-compression, not-for-internet-release version. Notice they said "we're making it smaller" -- chopping it down to 320x200 and compressing it.
  • oops....

    http://gti.veedub.nu/menace00.mov

max connections is limited to 10.
  • great... its the wrong one. I'm using linux and I can't view quicktime movies, and I just checked this on my roommate's computer. sorry for the false alarm there... as soon as someone can give me the REAL trailer I'll put it back up.
  • I got this from the guy who posted earlier here, and I didn't verify that this was the second trailer before I put it up for download... (I'm using linux and xanim doesn't know what to do with sorensen compression...) oh well. the mirror will be back up once I actually get the trailer. sorry again!
  • Here's the lastest news I found on the site:

    ANNOUNCEMENT
    MONDAY MAR 8 7:43PM ET

Contrary to what other sites have been posting, there will be NO
TRAILER B posted here, before STARWARS.COM posts it, according to
Lucasfilm's wishes. Even if, hypothetically, we were to put up a
version we got from, say, Entertainment Tonight, I have been told
that it would still be against Lucasfilm's wishes, unless starwars.com
has it posted already. This information can be confirmed on other
star wars websites that Lucasfilm also contacted, and I respect their
    wishes.

The big file that I am going to be putting out instead later tonight is
NOT Trailer B and in no way is it aimed against Lucasfilm's wishes to
keep the release of STAR WARS material under their control. It is
NOT moving STAR WARS FOOTAGE per se. However, I can confirm
that new pictures and the trailer WILL be released the minute that
the official site releases the trailer.
  • You may wish to consider limiting the number of users to something a bit more manageable. I'm downloading it now at a rate of about 600 bytes/second. Not good, considering I have dual ISDN.
  • Easy killer.

  • Or so they say...

  • Perhaps even better would be

"The Slashdot Effect Ate My Balls Page..."

    > OR, perhaps

"The Slashdot Effect Ate My Server Page..."

...I cleaned up the root partition and now there's LOTS of free space!
  • Sorry people, check the site, it was pure bullshit. It says on there some crap about southpark or something. really stupid.

    asinus sum et eo superbio

  • I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck. I suck.

BTW, the countingdown.com site was dead for several hours before the release and before the /. article was posted. There Is Another.

  • Sure, and I'm gonna download that via my 56k Modem! Wait ... I'll get somebody to download it and give it to me on 48 Zip cartridges ... no, that won't work. Maybe I should go buy a new hard disk at Fry's, just to hold this data ...

    Sheesh ...

    booo.

  • With the congestion at the public network access points that this will obviously cause, you're likely as not to NOT connect to much of anything except sites on your own backbone.
  • You might wanna check your date on that machine. It says the files were uploaded March 9, 199*8*.

  • As soon as I get the trailer it will be up at ftp://redwood.ml.org/pub/StarW ars/trailers/trailer2/ [ml.org]. Also I'll try to dload it myself, but would welcome somebody anonymously uploading it to my incoming directory. I'll probably up my user limit to 250 or so later. Yes, my ml.org name still works.
  • Hm, "FlashDot effect"? :-)
  • I hear that the trailer will be shown before the movie "Wing Commander" opening this Friday...
  • All I wanted was info on if and when there would be anything on TV that I could tape for my nephew but we'll probably get into the movie itself before I get through to this site

  • sorry bout that
I will mirror it if somebody can send it to me
ftp://24.0.158.203 anonymous login and you can upload it into the "incoming" directory.

  • hey! all you idiots! STOP hitting my site! i DONT have the clip yet

    yeesh

  • Not according to the StarWars.com site. They say it might, but there is not guarantee.
  • That just means that your traceroute is prohibited, which is probably a good thing.

    --
  • Is it on their site yet, or are they just getting crushed before anything's actually there?
  • And it's not there. They say later tonight.

They listed some sites that will have carry the list of mirrors - starwarz.com, jedinet.com and newsdroid.com. (note that I didn't make them links so you can't /. them into the ground quite so easily :)

They also said that Entertainment Tonight was going going to be showing it tomorrow night (wednesday)

-Erik, whose mirror is just waiting on getting the file :)
  • they evidently got the data uncompressed. Video is big. They still have to shrink down and compress it, I would imagine. The final size is probably gonna be like 15 megs or so...

    -Erik
  • No, I think they got several thousand friendly calls at once, and just aren't able to answer everything. Just because you've got a DSL connection doesn't mean that you'll stand a better chance of getting through...

    -Erik
  • They're NOT releasing the next trailer tonight
    From their site:

  • With a little effort that could be a nice haiku.
  • From www.starwars.com -
"The new trailer will be placed into general release, running on a wide variety of films over the coming weeks. Contrary to speculation, it will not be attached to any particular film, including Wing Commander, and in fact may not even play with Wing Commander. There is no assurance the trailer will play with any particular movie and you will need to contact your local theater for information on where the trailer will run in your area."

Damn, the site is still down!!!!
  • MUST HAVE MUST FIND MIRROR... Please someone?
  • I'll have a ftp mirror up at fragglerock.linuxpower.org/pub [linuxpower.org] as soon as possible.
  • you can upload it to fragglerock.linuxpower.org/incoming
  • somebody please send me the video, I would gladly put up a mirror!

  • I have a mirror up of the Star Wars Phantom Menace Trailer 2 here. [technonet.com]
  • God, 140 users already.
  • limit? whats that? oh yeah. im trying to figure that part out......
  • I'm sure lucas prays every night that we'll rally more people to see his film - i heard he's very concerned about it making any money at all.
  • You can always do what I'm going to do... close up all the net stuff and just work for the next couple hours. 'course, since I have to actually dial in, it's easier to just 'be offline.' I figure it'll be less stressful and more likely that I'll actually get the trailer if I wait. Um. maybe just one more try before I log off...

    Parity Odd
  • God, Rob - that was cruel.

AP-Pentagon Infowar team uses '/. effect' to destroy Iraqi information systems.
"We just posted a link to a Star Wars trailer there, and watched the destruction." said Gen. Taco. :-)

  • If somebody wants to send me a copy, I'll be happy to recompress it to mpeg...;oP
  • I am going to have a mirror at the phroputer [dhs.org]whenever I get my hands on it.

  • By stating that you "could" care less, my understanding, then would be that you do, indeed, care about them. If you did not at all care about them, then you could NOT care less.

It's funny how you seem to use bad language to describe a set of movies which you care about.

    lol. Sorry.

  • Tempting us with the trailer, and then we can't access the server ... Sheesh, how am I gonna get some work done when I have to keep trying to reach this site?
    ;-)
  • The temptation is just too much! I am doing web stuff right now, have ethernet connection ... Okay, maybe it is time to work on some documentation or something ...
  • menace00.mov?
Isn't that the purple-screened menace from
    the official site...

    from the A version!!

    geez!
  • The site is slashdotted to hell. Gotta wait :(
BTW I completely agree that it is gonna be a real crash test to put this movie on that /. test box.
  • the trailer isn't on yet. Here is what the site says:

HEADS UP: VISIT HERE ON TUESDAY FOR SOMETHING BIG!!!!!!! 15MB OR SO!! COME EARLY TO AVOID THE MAD RUSH!!
*UPDATED ETA: TUESDAY LATE EVENING USA PST
WE HAVE THE FILE! THE FILE IS CURRENTLY 4.8GB, CURRENTLY MAKING IT SMALLER
THE TARGA 2000 WE WERE USING BLEW UP AND WE'RE BURNING IT ONTO 6 CDS, TAKING IT TO SOMEONE ELSE'S PC TO MAKE IT AVAILABLE TO THE WEB

    **GET THOSE MIRRORS READY!!!!!!!!!!**
THE LIST OF MIRRORS WILL ALSO GO UP AT JEDINET.COM STARWARZ.COM AND NEWSDROID.COM IF YOU CANT GET ON HERE LATER TONIGHT
  • Uh...were is it...the only thing I could find were 2 copies of the original trailer.
  • From Countdown to SW:

*****UPDATE: THE FILE IS NOW 23MB, AND WILL BE READY IN ABOUT ONE HOUR AND A HALF(7:30PM ET)
  • well...in case you never read it, there is a little message when you post a message here that says soemthing to the effect ALL POSTS WILL BE DELAYED. So everybody who posts probably thinks they are the first to do so.
  • I can actually log on to rawhide.redhat.com

or get a spot on Id's Quake servers....

Mental Note: Announce Star Wars Trailer next time I need access to server...
  • In true Nerd fasion (and due to my omnipitence)...
I considered this. But aren't all the /.'s out and about on the network already? All something like this does is direct the existing traffic (with which I am competing) to a single destination. Maybe if I was attempting to connect with a server on the same backbone as the /. target, I would experience trouble, otherwise...

    Maybe so...
  • The trailer should be available tonight. I was just at CountingDown and they are having hardware problems. The trailer should be about 15 MB when finished (MPG), it's 4.3 GB (AVI) now. Also, there are several shows which will be airing the trailer tomorrow night on TV for those of you not ale to download it. The only one I'm sure of is Entertainment Tonight. Hope this helps.
  • This is not the second trailer, from what people on IRC are telling me. They say it looks like the teaser with "starwars.com" plastered all over it.

Just fair warning to whoever want to try it.
  • Well of COURSE it will start all over again with star wars 2.. what are you, stupid?

Listen bud, some of us have been obsessed with this series for the last 20 years. We're not about to stop now, you moron.

Sheesh. Like a guy can't be obsessed with anything anymore..

  • I thought it was pretty damn funny.. Although they should have reworded the original announcement, as it sure as hell sounded like they had the 2nd trailer..

  • I suspect that Lucas wants people to see it in the theaters first. It will certainly look and sound a lot better there than on our pitiful little PCs.

Once Lucas releases the "real" trailer, I'm sure there will be a large number of well-equipped mirror sites to retrieve it from. Some of them will have pipes big enough to avoid getting Slashdotted.

And then we can tell countingdown.com to go take a flying leap. They really shouldn't tease us like that...
  • Er, so what is the "big file I am posting tonight," then? That sounds a bit mysterious. Notice the way _moving_ is set off. Hmm.
  • Or maybe you were (or are about to be) lucky enough to actually get a copy, but don't have any place to serve it up for the masses. Here's a suggestion to put tab A in slot B:

If you get a copy but don't have a site, announce that fact here, along with an offer to anon-ftp it TO anybody's server that's willing to serve it up free. Once you give away a copy, announce that place.

If you have a server, watch for an announcement, and send mail to the first person you see that makes the above offer, giving server details.
  • That's cruel, I downloaded it and it's just the first trailer. Better looking, but still the first trailer.
  • Unless this movie ends up burning money on stupid crap, like Waterworld (which cost $400 Million, I think), Lucas will have nothing to worry about. Even if it costs $400M, he'll most likely come out way ahead.

Think about it, all the kids who thought Star Wars was so awesome in the 70s are now the Bill Gateses of the world. With that kind of money in the customer base, the movie will make millions in merchandising alone.

Also, I doubt anybody wants to shut down the sites mirroring the trailer. I mean, it's free advertising.

Maybe now we will get a Spaceballs sequel... haha!
  • Woohoo!

Other people who get annoyed by this.

My best friend says it all the time, and it drives me BERZERK!!!!!

    Hey Rob! New poll idea:

    • "I could care less."

    • Hate that stupid expression! It's wrong, wrong, wrong!
    • It's wrong, but I don't really care.
    • I use it myself.
    • Huh?
    • This poll sucks / Slashdot sucks / Rob is an idiot / First post!

Well... that's my rant for the day...

    - Sean
  • Don't bother downloading that file. As pointed out, it's a preview for Star Trek: Insurrection. Not the much-coveted Phantom Menace preview 2.
    --
    - Sean

  • They were just teasing us. They just posted a
note saying they won't put it up until the
official site does, or some lame excuse like
that. They spent the whole afternoon putting
up progress reports on the encoding of the
video, and then just decide not to put it up!

    Argh!
  • Pretty funny, nice graphics.
    Just dissappointed it wasn't real.

I'll have to go to the movies.
  • toooooooooooooooooooooooottttttttttttttttt!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
