Duchovny to Quit X-Files 197

!Xabbu writes "Canoe reports that "David Duchovny says corporate nepotism at Fox cost him millions and this is undoubtedly his final year on The X-Files"... Woe-is-me... for what shall we do if the X-Files goes off the air? "

Duchovny to Quit X-Files

  • In the Entertainment Weekly article, it says that "...Gillian Anderson's contract calls for an eighth year if Carter and Fox decide to carry on without Agent Mulder." So, there's the potential for one more year, under Anderson's contract.
  • Same here, about 1.5 - 2 years ago. I spung and watched the flick in the theatre and was abhorred. It was s 2 hour episode with bad dialoge and cussing. Oz is great, the Sopranos kicks some serious tail and Stargate SG-1(showtime sci-friday) is sometimes good sometimes hokey but i loved the movie. Sex in the city is funny but i want to get liad like these women do and it just ain't happening :-). (points to above misspelling... maybe if i could just spell liad right!!)

  • Anybody watching Loveline on MTV last night (Mon.)? I keep it on in the background, so it's a radio show like it should be (and is). There was this chick whose husband had died, and since he looked a lot like Fox and they watched it together, she was obsessively watching it. Anyway, her question for Dr. Drew and the crazy Jew was if she should stop. I guess somebody was listening and had a good answer for her, eh?

(BTW: The Man Show kicks ass, and shows it off...)
  • Thanks for clearing that up... I keep imagining Frank Black a.k.a. "Black Francis" of the Pixies.

Imagine a 300-pound bald dude in overalls screaming into a microphone while a dischordant guitar plays loud surfer tunes.

    Best album: Surfer Rosa :)

Now imagine said "Frank Black" having steamy, but thwarted encounters with Scully. Sorta like "Moonlighting meets Drew Carey" as directed by David Lynch.

    Yuck.

  • I can't find the file on the page or any links related to the page, i also looked in the source as suggested above, i guess i'm too late. It sucks to see the xfiles go but i'm sure they will play re-runs. Just look at the flintstones.
  • Dudes, this is OFN. I read this in my lame local newpaper's entertainment section weeks ago.

X-Files, TNG...coming soon I'm sure, and for those D.D. fans, there's always Red Shoe Diary episodes on showtime....

  • She's not really a redhead, so why bother?

No way! This is like finding out Mickey Mantle corked his bat!
  • Two words for you "Yeah Right!"

The X Files died the day after the movie was released. The main attraction in my opinion was the question of whether aliens existed or not. Now that I know for sure, it does not intrest me. The Xfiles should have done what the movie Ronin did. They should have never told us the secret. Also moving to California was the gravest mistake they ever made. This whole season was a mistake I hope.

In my dorm we used to watch the X files like it was a religious ritual. After three episodes of this season we never watched it again. Once you know too much the secrets are not important anymore. Not to mention this season was terrible!

They should have learned from JMS (from B5 fame) to leave meat on the hook and keep drawing the audience deeper.

I think there should be an episode of the X-files where Mulder and Scully discover that Mae Ling Mak has been transformed into a stone statue, whilst nude. Many interesting plot ideas could spring forth from this. And so it goes.... I would watch that episode, over and over. Mae Ling Mak could play the Mae Ling Mak statue. It would be a very challenging role, unless maybe the produces could figure out how to ACTUALLY turn her to stone... then she could REALLY be a naked statue on the show.
  • Duchovny's contract was up after this coming season anyway, and he most likely would have left even if Fox didn't get caught up in a game of greed. He had originally wanted to quit after five seasons, but they threw too much cash at him at the time.

Anyway, GA is still under contract for this season and the next, so all the x-philes out there have at least two more seasons to look forward to. With the dropoff in show quality over the last two seasons though they probably should have made the last season the series finale.
  • Do they have the guts to cut the show after Duchovny leaves? You guys may think you want the X-Files to go on forever, but do we really want the thing continuing on forever as some mutant spawn like the show "Sliders"? Sliders used to be good, but everyone save Rembrandt left.. now they have a couple of twinkies in their place and walking through their parts.

Scully and Mulder without the Mulder just isn't the same.
  • the pompousness is the reason why it was sooo good ... that and gillian anderson is a babe (yes i am a chick, bite me ... i like fems ... deal with it)

Apparently someone got a hold of the pre sale network affiliate copy of the season premier for next season, and encoded it in real video... you can get it at the following address:

pirate copy of 1999 season premier [louisville.edu]

Obviously there's no telling how long this will be available before fox shuts it down, so get it quick.

    SPOILERS

    Mulder suspects UFO involvement

    Sculley cannot believe it

Their boss dissaproves of their investigation

the "cancer man" sayse some ominous stuff

I don't want to ruin it, so watch it now!!

  • The X-Files was one of the few reasons I even watch TV anymore, and with Duchovny gone, it just won't be the same. I loved the conspiracy theroies(sp) and just the general thought of alien existance. Not to mention that Scully is really hot ; ). I'll be sad to see it go, but I'm glad that by the final show, the whole conspiracy will finally be reveled and understood.
  • by Trak ( 670 )
bahaha! much more entertaining than the mae ling mak posts ;-)
  • About time the show ended. It's a good show but it has been dragging on the past few years.
  • not bloody likely that you'll run out of things to do in perl =)
  • Now if they would end the series with a 'bang' (a Worthy End)...
My Idea of a worthy end:

We find out that Cancer Man is actually the queen alien named Nam Recnac who uses the "cancer stick" as a life support device.

We find out that the Fox is actually Cancer Man's illegit. child.

We find out that Scully in reality is Fox's sister, who is also another illegit child from Cancer Man's past.

On one of the Monster of the Week episodes we find that big foot is actually the crown prince of the royal imperial nation of people who like to gauge their eyes out. For some conveluted reason he does not like his mother who is Cancer Man, so he strikes a deal with race of shape shifters who can only die by having a needle poked in there neck to kidnap Fox and Scully.

The oil aliens who do not seem to serve any logical purpose hears about this conveluted plot and decide to assassinate Bigfoot. Cancer Man believes the humans are responsible for this and blow up the earth ID4 style. Fox and Scully escape somehow and find themselves on the mothership where Cancer Man reveals his true self.

Fox and Scully finally get married and give birth to the antichrist! (sorry wrong show)

You must admit that anything is believable after last season! ^_^

  • what will i ever do with out my x-files? havent missed an episode in ages..this is depresssing...i think im gonna go cry my self to sleep tonight :(
    Gorfin
  • This season will be the last season of the X-files anyway... There will be no X-files for him to quit, so this really isn't news.
  • The Lone Gunmen every week? I can't imagine anything worse - unless it was That 70's Show.

The Lone Gunmen are so one-dimensional. They have so little to work with by themselves. They work in their context. They are a foil to Fox and Dana, a geeky subtext to the interesting ideas.

While I agree that X wouldn't be X without them, that doesn't mean they can stand on their own.
  • It doesn't really matter. The loose ends in the plotline will probably be all resolved by the end of this season. It's pretty certain that X-Files will continue on the silver screen.

The show had a very good, long, run. It's time to move on to something else. Although, I have absolutely no clue what else I'm going to watch on Sunday nights... Whatshisname's - the producer's - other shows were complete flops.
    --

  • Whatever will I do without my X-Files?

Honestly though, that shows been going downhill for a while. I really liked it in the begginning, but nowadays I have trouble staying awake through some of their episodes. Or maybe it's just that after so many years of them doing the same exact thing without ever accomplishing anything I just got sick of it.
  • Yes, but why is X-files going off the air?

hmmm... should have posted this as an AC, but then, all the ACs are really Microsoft Employees, ya' know... In fact, they are all Bill Gates. It's true!

I don't know why I'm bothering with this, they will never let this be posted, or something will just happen to /. and this posting won't be there anymore.

If you see this, do yourself a favor and don't send me any mail. It's the only way you'll be safe in the long run. Bill Gates reads all my mail.

  • I think that yeah, the show's had as much as it can take. maybe a few feature films wouldn't be too bad, but the show is seriously starting to suffer. Duchovny realizes this and is trying to get as much as he can out of the Fox Corporation. It's sad, but it's smart of him, though his fans don't like it one bit. Though if the show continues without him, it will die, as it has already started to do. I say leave the law suit alone, it's only going to make people hate him and not see his movies, but drop X-Files once it finally dwindles down to nothing.
  • ..is how for the whole life of the Millennium show I managed to hear nothing about it. NO buzz, no fuss, nothing. Well maybe I did not pay atention. I accidentally discovered it in the current re-run on FX: this is order of magnitude better show than anything else on TV. I made me accept American Television, which I hated, and watched only sparely, for language comprehention practice. Rerun is in the middle of the second season now and so far I like it.
I really hope they make good miniseries...
  • Not necessarily true. Fox loves the X-Files, and they're gonna do anything they can to think of some way that the show will go on.
  • Is this the real reason for the end of the X-files or is there a more sinister one? :-)
  • As a computer hobbiest, programmer, gamer, webmaster (sorta), and a sysadmin, getting a life is not an option for me. What should *I* do??
  • I think it's a great show overall, but I can't stand it personally. I watched a couple episodes, and it makes my head spin. It's just too annoying of a show to watch. It seems to be catered to people who've been drinking too much caffeine all Sunday.
  • Have they not covered every single supernatural phenomena there is and made up a few along the way??? What is left??? I can't think of anything. Some point are they not going to run out??? Have they not killed off every character on there and brought them back to life twice each??? How many different ways can a viewer be grossed out??? How many species of UFO are there???
I'm not a couch potato-er-ok i'm in denial- but have you noticed that most series that are popular have a lifespan of about five to seven years anyway? Is that anything like a seven year itch you find in other relationships?
To be honest, I liked the characters Scully and Mulder. They have endearing traits. Professional but approachable, fictional but completely believable. G-Men-er-G-Persons you could really trust. Not since the days of Eliot Ness have we seen anything so good.

Ok, they run out of spooks to chase. Have them chase something else, but keep the characters Scully and Mulder going. Have them chase ordinary criminals in a exotic locale ala Hawaii Five-O. No, I'm not grasping at straws-it could work. After the extraordinary becomes ordinary then the ordinary is extraordinry. They could reinvent themselves - how 'bout "touched by an FBI" Hey, it could work.
  • WTF is Mae Ling Mak anyway??
  • buy an old rusted out VW beetle and fix it up, drop a porsche engine into it, go to bug shows, gawk at the bikini babes.

"The number of suckers born each minute doubles every 18 months."
  • Well think about it... what kind of stupid name is "USA Mulder"?
  • HBO is really the only TV I watch anymore. The quality of the shows is so much better than what you get on network TV. I personally love Oz and the Sopranos, and Arliss cracks me up. The older Larry Sanders show is still a crack up. HBO is definitely worth it, in my opinion.
  • is the beggars and choosers based on the Kim Stanley Robinson SF novel of the same name? Anybody know out there?
  • His acting career is going nowhere, so at least we'll never see him again.

'cept for reruns on the sci-fi channel.
  • I wonder if Mr Duchovny can spell Mr David Curuso?
Like Mr Curuso, Duchovny is digging his own grave.
He should shut up and be grateful for his success.
He has zero chance to make it in the big screen, instead his single handedly ruining the
series and his own career. I used to love this
guy and his show, but at the rate it is going people will ask who is David Duchovny in just few short years.
  • >>They could reinvent themselves

No! I hate it when the networks try to do this. Look at what happened to Sliders. The original show was, well, ORIGINAL. It has now morphed into the "young, brash hero saves the day by pulling a totally unbelievable miracle out of his/her ass" thing that corporate TV turns every action show into eventually. The originallity and freshness is gone, and all that is left behind is some stock stories from the backshelves of a Hollywood studio with the names and set replaced. The same was done with Babylon5. I watched one episode of Excalibur and thought, "Why the hell are they trying to be Star Trek?" (Did anyone one else pick up on the 5 year mission thing? How about the military starship with with wide, clean, carpeted walls and expansive living quarters?)

Let the X-Files die an honorable death gracefully. Don't try to pull it back from the brink by reinventing it like some 60yr old man buying a sports car in a lame attempt to prove he's not getting old.
  • UGH! They better not! If they did, the show would end up like Sliders. Just kill it, and use your highly-paid creative mind to come up with something new for a change.

Yeah, I could just see it... Fox Mulder is abducted by aliens, who make him look completely different, and then release him. Scully eventually believes that it really is him, but refuses to believe the alien part of the story. She thinks he just got a new haircut...
  • SETI@Home is a voluntary CPU-tax.

Instead of $, you pay in cycles and bandwidth, the only REAL currency in the information age. (presuming information really does want to be FREE (beer)).

"The number of suckers born each minute doubles every 18 months."
  • if they were from Waco, they weren't aliens. You have to go a few dozen miles south of there to find aliens.

"The number of suckers born each minute doubles every 18 months."
  • I stopped watching X-Files after they moved from friday to sunday. The show back then was great. There was just one thing missing... ANSWERS.

I went on suspension of disbelief for 3 years. (I'm one of those people that actually remember old episodes.) The creator of X-Files seems to think that people will swallow this stuff till a movie comes out in 2001 to explain it all.

I need resolution of threads throughout the run of the show. Keep giving a piece of the puzzle at a time. Then keep moving the bar higher and higher. Chris Carter couldn't even keep his own threads straight. Carter should learn from JMS of B5 fame.
  • I think you got that one backwards.

How so? Dr. Crusher was the original doctor, then she left and Dr. Pulasky filled in, then she came back. Crusher was pretty cool, but Pulasky was annoying.

  • Yeah, the last few seasons have totally not made sense. I'm totally lost as to what's happening in the show now, with aliens here and there, CGB, etc etc, like, what is happening???? Some of the writing, compared to earlier episodes, have been very lame. Can anyone say Twin Peaks?

I liked that one too, but then it just got too weird and made less sense.

  • TNT canceled it before it even started for not having enough sex and violence.

Yeah, a show that cleverly uses an interspecies pr0n video as a plot device doesn't have enough sex and violence for the PHBs. That "cleverly" kills them every time.

What can you expect from a network that has its professional wrestling shows run late so the audience will think it's a real sport?
    /.

  • and maybe the playboy channel (or whatever channel owns that ultrasoft 'erotic' show he played in.. I think Red Shoes diaries)
  • I really liked Millenium, but it suffers from the same thing as the X-files: Chris Carter is behind it, and he's a wanker. His theory of "keeping people in suspense" just blows. The best X-files episodes are the ones that are not related to the conspiracy / alien takeover crap, the ones that were 1 hour long and were never spoken of again, because they have resolution in them. At the end of the episode, you saw a complete story. After watching 6 seasons and a $100M film, we still don't have any the complete story.

There were episodes of Millenium that I didn't like, but they were fewer and further between than episodes of the X-files. This, I think, is due to the fact that they had a complete story in them, as well as having the series-running conspiracy of the Millenium Group. So he obviously knows how to do a series that gives you a piece of the puzzle a little more frequently, but also keeps you interested in between pieces.

The thing that I found amusing about this story is that Fox apparently knew they were underselling it and offered Chris Carter incentives to let them do so, while screwing everyone else over. So I'd imagine that it won't be hard for Duchovny to get some money out of Fox over all this. I just wonder if he isn't pissed at Chris Carter over it, too.

  • I agree with many others that the X Files has run its course, and it is time to move on. However, it would make sense to do a related spinoff series focusing on some of the minor characters. Imagine having The Lone Gunmen every week!
  • It wouldn't be the first time an actor changes but the character goes on.

Darrin Stevens (Bewitched) is just one example.

    Airneil
  • I'm afraid now the X-Files won't end their series, now, and instead give Scully a new cheesy sidekick. (e.g. like Dr. Crusher -> Dr. Pulasky)
  • The X-files has all the relevnace of WIN buttons (not the computer kind, lets see who remebers what they were) and the price of octarine tinted sunglasses on the hub.

If you want to hear the real dealstuff the Xfile cant deliver anymore, go listen to art bell, go listen to X Minus One, Dimension X, and even Earth Search.

It sadens me to see so many people so tied up in such a shitty excuse for a TV show. The only way X Files could get any worse is if they hired Richard Greeco and the cast of Freinds to come in and have the whole thing written by Sid and Marty Croft.

David D, go home and have some sex with your wife. Jesus man, your married to one fine piece and you actualy leave the house? With all that so called "Sexual addiction" you have you should order in every night and day and get housekeeping to change your sheets every 6 hours.

As for Gillain Anderson, i bet ya shes guest staring on Love Boat The Next Generation within a year.

  • My wife and I went to the Open Caption version of X files when it came to town, neither of us were impressed, the open caption part was sort of cool..

Oz is very cool. SG1 kicks ass, "MacGuyver in Space!!!!"

Sex in the city annoys me, I'm not sure why.

  • Actually, GA is the *only* one who still has a contract, I believe. Carter and Duchovny are both only signed for season 7, and Carter is all hot and bothered about doing his new series "Harsh Realm," so I doubt he will actually want to continue. I'm guessing that Harsh Realm will suck, and die like Millennium did. Except Millennium was really really cool, and much darker and more disturbing than X-Files. Thank god for FX.

I'm thinking there should be a movie starring the following three leathery-faced old men:
    1) Lance Heinriksen (sp)
    2) James Woods
    3) Roy Schieder

Lance could be the quiet, brooding, intelligent one, James could be the violent one who goes around killing bad guys, and Roy could be the excitable one who runs around like a chicken with his head cut off :)

    "CORN!"
  • The first season of Millenium did rule. Unfortunately, it was too dark for the mass appeal(like some of X-Files episodes aren't *shrug*) so they dumbed it way way down. By doing that, they lost the following it originally had dooming it all together. Once again, the TV Execs killed an intreging show before it's prime.
  • The X-files along with Star Trek DS9 were two of the most creative and orignal shows on TV. They spawned so many copy shows, space above and beyond, Dark Skies...etc. The number of copy shows that survived (um..none) proves that The X-files had a special formula. Mulder (david) fit perfectly. He had character and charm. I will miss this show. Growing up is no fun.

    -brandon
"hacking for all the kiddies that need scripts"
  • Umm, Millennium was cancelled already ... Actually, Space Above and Beyond was better than either, though I think that they all 3 could have converged quite nicely (now that could make a good movie).
  • So do the Soprannos, SG-1, and Total Recall 2070. Now if I could just figure out how to get a cameo on Sex and the City... X-files is getting a little wimpy now but back in the day, it rocked as well.
--- Never hold a dustbuster and a cat at the same time ---
  • Millenium is no more -- not renewed for the fall season -- and if I may say so, it's a good thing.

The first season was good. The second season was, in my opinion, some of the finest television ever produced (with a couple of clinkers). Morgan and Wong wrote and produced intelligent, witty shows that asked questions about life, death, and faith.

They even used religion superbly, with mysticism (not trashy, Shirley Maclaine type), superstition and historical Christianity blended into plots that didn't just tease like the X-Files.

Then, in the third season, Chris Carter returned to the helm and apparently decreed that there was to be no more religion. Back to the "psycho killer of the week" dreck, completely ignoring all the developments of the second season, and forcing it into an ugly "Special FBI Agent" theme. So much for all the best conflicts like family/work, spiritual/physical, loyalty/justics.

I've heard that the third season improved in the second half, but they haven't come out on video here (Japan) yet, so I can't comment on them.

There is talk of a 6-part miniseries to wind things up, maybe around Christmas. I just hope to God they bring back Morgan and Wong.
  • Now I'm really bummed. I've been waiting for the season premeire of Millenium!

    Dammit!!!

BTW, "the practice" is pretty cool for Sunday nights.
--- Never hold a dustbuster and a cat at the same time ---
  • It is someone on the Segfault.org humor site. I haven't been able to figure exactly what it is supposed to mean though because segfault is always down :/
  • The X should be used for this post, not for the X-Free86 post.

I nominate Mike Myers as David's replacement...

    "The X-Files86 Movie Version 2.0"
    "The alien that shagged me"
  • ...And lets not forget Spawn. Im forced to get it on DVD however, not having cable yet. But now that Mediaone is in my town (along with cable modem access) I don't think I'll be able to resist.

Hey, anyone remember when HBO showed movies?

    ====
  • Y'know, Fox could royally screw Duchovny by killing off Mulder in next season's finale.

Would they do it? I don't know. For most fans Duchovny and Anderson are the X-Files. Such a move would effectively wipe out any chance of movies in the future.

On the other hand, if the lawsuit wipes out that chance anyway, well..
    -----

  • UFOs maybe but it's been getting kinda ridiculous in the last few years. Never liked the show...

    Today's English Lesson: Oxymorons

  • The Lone Gunmen!

Ok, now more than three words. I was remarking to my fiance' last season how cool it would be if Fox did a Lone Gunmen series.

I'd never miss an episode as long as they did it right. Then they could use Skully as an occasional character who shows up whenever the boys need a little FBI help.

POssible story line for an episode (or a few if they throw in enough good filler).

'Hickey develops a lightning fast and extremely secure encryption algorithm. After a group meeting with TLG (The Lone Gunmen) he decided that he should open source it, and let the world benefit from increased privacy and keep the "shadow government" at bay. They enlist the help of an Old Skool Berkley hacker type who is more adept at internet anonymity, packet hijacking, IP spoofing and the like. Instead of actually helping them he turns a copy of the info over to AD Kirch who is being blackmailed by the Cancer man because of his mysterious past.

Kirch is instructed to put an end to this Crypto nonesense immediately. He sneaks into the TLG hideout with an emp grenade (sorry for the blatent TF rip-off) and 5 gallons of napalm, as he's about to deploy them AD Skinner, agent Skully, and TLG step out with guns and video cameras drawn. Kirch reaches and pulls out an HK SOCOM .45, Skully and Skinner open fire after they've both empied their magazines Kirch finally slumps to the floor and an effervescent green liquid pours out of all of the bullet holes in Kirch's body. 'Hickey stuffs a Jaz cart into his backpack and the joint goes up on flames.

    Fade out....

Fade Back in, TLG are huddled around a computer monitor and Langley exclaims "We did it, the information is out there." Frohike asks "Who's Kung Fu is the best?" They all laugh and we get a glimpse of the screen.

It's SLASHDOT--NEWS FOR NERDS. STUFF THAT MATTERS. With a headline...

Über Crypto algorithm source sent to EFF, FSF, and our own CmdrTaco by anonymous contributor.

Screen goes black with the words emplazened across the middle "The source is out there".

OK, the last line I was joking, but I think that the rest could be shaped into a good run of episodes and possibly even a series.

I don't watch X-Files for Mulder anyway, I want to see Frohike lay Skully.

    LK
  • Our lil 'button-down sex symbol'? Oh please.. she's Gillian Anderson.. who in Hollywood WOULDN'T hire her. The only flap she made was not being paid equally to Duchovny on the X-Files. Then they paid her, and she's continued to do great work since then.

Personally I'm looking forward to seeing ANYTHING else she does.
  • The show has gotten quite stale lately... Maybe the loss of a major charachter is what was needed to make it interesting again.

    Just a thought,

    -Ross
  • Once you cross the border, you become the alien.
  • I'm a chick, too, and I would SO lick Gillian. And David. :-)
After the XFiles shuts down, how about a season in my pants? Woo!

The Divine Creatrix in a Mortal Shell that stays Crunchy in Milk
  • HA! You took the words right out of my mouth! Although having the XFiles Theme song changed to "They got a ranch they call...number 51!!!!" would be cool... :-)
The Divine Creatrix in a Mortal Shell that stays Crunchy in Milk
  • though i never pity a person of whom has a lot more money than they know what to do with and still complain that they need more, i do believe that duchovny does need to protect his interests.
as much as i do not want a lot of money (enough to live on and upgrade my systems will suit me nicely), i would also seek to have my employer live up do their end of the bargain if only for the principal of the matter.
on the other hand while it is true that the x-files is a great show, i think it's probably a good idea to quit beating a dead alien. after the third season the show began to lose a bit of it's ingenuity and now they are simply rehashing old plots with a new spin.
and anyhow, can't everyone find something better to do than stare at a tv all day? i'm all for entertainment, expecially sci-fi, but c'mon people.
  • Well, if the X-Files continues, maybe they should get someone else to join Sculley:

    1. Patrick Stewart (as the Bald Man)
    2. Lance Henriksen (as Frank Black)
    3. Jonathan Frakes
    4. Brent Spiner
    5. Jerry O'Connell
    6. Peter Horton (as Ezekiel Stone) and
John Glover (as the Devil) --- from Brimstone
    7. Robert Beltran (as Chakotay Alienfellow)
    8. Christopher Walken
    9. George Clooney
    10. Christopher Lambert (as Conner Macleod)
    11. Julia Roberts
    ......

    Hmmmm.....I need some coffee.....
    ------------------------------------- -----------------------
  • nah, he gets glasses. That makes people look totally different, like the SNL opening monologue when Terry Hatcher was hosting.
  • Or go for movies.

I've grown sick of the X files by now (and I'm in Europe, which is at least 1 or 2 seasons behind. I can't even imagine how boring it must be by now, unless they've changed course.), because everything has been rehashed at least a dozen times, and nothing's really happening. Nothing gets solved.

I realise that that is the X files, but that way you aren't getting anywhere, the series isn't growing anymore, and 90% of it is more or less a copy of an earlier episode.

Now if they would end the series with a 'bang' (a Worthy End) and go make the occasional movie after that, they could milk more life out of it if they want to. I can imagine the actors agreeing to the occasional movie, but not to Yet Another season of the series. The movies would have to be better than the first one, though... ;-)

That may be the smart thing to do for Fox, because if the actors quit, the X files is basically dead and that's that. I don't think it's possible to replace them...

  • heh, we actually own one, but my stepfather refuses to touch it. He wanted to restore it but he's rather frugal when it comes to spending his cash. It's a nice one too 1956 VW bug, ragtop, oval rear view window(those are really popular in the VW world). But he refuses to fix it up... maybe when i'm older...
  • thats ok by my standards (if any)
  • Slashdot requires you to put crap in this box, so I'm putting crap here. *NT* means no text.

  • This is heavy.

As an X-Phile this can't be true.
It seems the only reason people quit shows these
days is over money - damnit, if I were in duchovny's position I would stop whining and continue the show. Hell, he's got millions of fans, let's all send him a dollar to cheer him up.

  • I seem to recall that the move to LA was a demand from Duchovny, if the show were to go on at all. So if they hadn't moved to LA the X files might have been history already. Might have been just as well anyway...
  • *W*hip *I*nflation *N*ow, probably the only thing people will remember about Jerry Ford except for the chevy chase impersonations and the "appearance" on the simpsons...

    "Do you like Nachos?"
  • This isn't completely surprising, nor honestly a big deal.
I recall at the beginning of last season, after doing the movie, that they were discussing ending the show anyways - they had enjoyed doing movies too much, and mentioned wrapping the show up in another season or two...
I was sort of expecting the series to end in this season anyway (Although now it doesn't look like they'll go to do more movies ).

  • Crusade just did a parody of X-files
Perhaps Crusade would be a show to watch...

oh wait.. TNT canceled it before it even started for not having enough sex and violence.
  • ...much better series. I want them to continue... Screw X-files.

    I love Scully.
  • Getting a life is always an option...
  • will he at least bang that redhead?
  • A better link (IMHO) about what's happening is at

  • UGH! They better not! If they did, the show would end up like Sliders. Just kill it, and use your highly-paid creative mind to come up with something new for a change.

"The number of suckers born each minute doubles every 18 months."
  • Ah heck, X-files is the only thing I've watched regularly on TV in the last 18 years or so. Might as well pull the plug on that dang thing for good.

  • Nay, Nay, Dr. Pulasky was the best character on Next Generation; she's the only one who didnt want to be buddys with everyone and take everything so seriously. Plus, she treated Data like a machine which was a refreshing change from all the other starfleet do-gooders
  • Oh my god, I'm sorry for you. S:AAB was about the stupidest show since Battlestar Glactica. (of course, I watched that when I was 10 too).

Incredibly stupid. What, were they fighter pilots, or ground troops? With NO training whatsoever, they're ready for space flight? They're ready for space combat in one-man fighters? Must be just naturally smart and talented to know how to deal with magnetic fields, radiation belts, gravitational fields, 3-dimensional thinking, alien psychology (in combat situations), etc. Now let's take these brilliant minds, and make them grunts in the trenches, because they can also deal with ground tactics, survival in hostile alien environments (harsh atmospheres, different gravity, alien flora and fauna).
Yeah, all Science Fiction needs is another totally brain-dead, dumbed down shoot-em-up show, built of poorly contrived excuses to show the main characters in a variety of situations where they're zapping bad guys with lasers.

"The number of suckers born each minute doubles every 18 months."
  • If you want some REAL entertainment (Subject: get a life), you should check out the X-Files' fan sites' message board. Man, are these guys priced out of the "life" market or what's the deal?

  • ... they can always clone a copy - remember Alien Resurrection? Ripley was dead for 200 years..
  • ..they will make episodes about:
    • Internet stocks rise is a bizzare side effect of perpetuum mobile, successfully(?) built in 1935. Mulder finds the author's granddaughter, she she shows him a glass bulb with something rotating within, and claims that this is the last device, left running for decades. When Scully meets author's granddaughter later, she finds the bulb motionless and has a long conversation with Mulder. Later Mulder finds his LCOS stock in a deep dive that started the day when he seen the device.
    • Pieces of FreeBSD -CURRENT and Linux odd-numbered kernels show strangely matching patterns of bugs being introduced and fixed in the same subsystem approximately at the same time. FreeBSD developers notice that and accuse Linux in stealing, Linux developers ignore that except having some minor flames at lkml, FreeBSD core team keeps itself out of this. Scully runs analysis of changes in FreeBSD CVS vs. Linux kernel patches (and makes some derogatory comments to Linux way of keeping the history). Mulder talks with jkh (in person) Linus (by email), Eric Allman and Paul Vixie (in person, both at the same time) and Theo de Raadt (also in person, Mulder meets him at some gloomy and desolate place). None of them make things any more clear than what we already know from them about bugs, however Paul Vixie suggests that bugs are obscure, and really anything can influence people to write them. Mulder talks to Scully, and she tries to match the moments of all kinds of significant events with moments when buggy code was written and fixed. Large amount of "events" fall into short timeframe after things like earthquakes, US military operations, mass shootings and other events, widely covered in the media, intensive flamewars in linux or freebsd mailing lists (however the effect is visible on both systems even if flamewar was limited to one list), and Jon Katz articles. However Scully fails to make any sense of relationship between subsystem affected and a kind of event -- say, TCP bugs to particular military operations, SMP cleanup to school shooting, drivers to media-related Katz articles, etc. Mulder suggests that it takes a non-human intelligence to understand the relation.
  • Duchovny is actually being very reasonable. There's an article in this week's Entertainment Weekly about it, with an interview.

Here's the problem: a hot property (like X-Files) goes into syndication. Despite the fact that USA Network offered more money, the syndication is granted to Fox Network... which is owned by the same people who own the show. Fox (the global entity) reaps the rewards and stakeholders, such as Duchovny, get screwed out of market potential for their work.

Alan Alda already won a similar lawsuit involving syndication of M*A*S*H.

  • The only thing I liked about the last few seasons was the baseball episode. There wasn't any of the super-conspiricy crap. There wasn't any of the "we'll give you another hint to what the question you should be asking is" crap. It was an alien playing baseball, plain, simple, and really funny.
  • What, were they fighter pilots, or ground troops?

D'oh! OK. Yea. I did forget that little annoyance. :)

I would have much preferred it if the show followed numerous groups. Maybe flyboys and groundtroops. The concept of highly trained pilots being tossed into ground conflicts (requireing completely different training) was... ahem... silly.

  • By far the two best reasons to get HBO. It's starting to be worth it, it's soo nice to watch a show without commercials (and occasional nudity). "Mr. Show with Bob and David" is sketch comedy to the nth, they've got a pretty sweet line-up.

Well we all can start making predictions about how the show ends. Will Fox and Scrumptious Sculley finally, ah, em, have breakfast together? Will the Cigarette Smoking Man stop smoking and start jogging? Will we see Fox's sister? Will SETI@home find the aliens? Will we find out that the head of the Justice Department is an alien? (cheap shot, sorry). Will the aliens really look like JarJar? What if they look like penguins?

So many questions, so little brain cells.

And now for the ubiquitous comment. Damn it! It is the X-File System, not the X-Files System.

Finally, my suggestion for a replacement for David, is Kramer from Seinfeld (image his reaction when he sees an alien).
