Geeks In Space: Easy Listening 47

Back again with a new episode, we talk about Matrix sequels, cellphone experiments, Echelon, and plenty other subjects. There are plenty of radio shows on the internet, but no one else would record this stuff. This amazing feat of bandwidth consumption can be had at TheSync.

Geeks In Space: Easy Listening

  • Um, huh?

I see "Geeks in Space", an audio show available in Real and MP3 (streaming) and MP3 (nonstreaming).

I don't see any Media Player formats.

Best episode ever. CowboyNeal da man.

On another note, would this [min.net] qualify as the first Slashdot book? :P

  • Tell me, what *exactly* is the reason that a radio show by people who claim to support the Free Software movement is broadcasted in a proprietary format which can only be listened to using proprietary, not open, binary, Intel only, closed, inaccessible, undocumented and evil plugins?

Come on, creating MP3s isn't that hard. Even creating MP3 livestreams is simple (hint: take LAME, make two fifos, connect that to obsequiem, and you're done. Instant Free Software Internet radio).
  • I think shorter shows on a more regular schedule would rock.
  • You mean Howard Stern? Hey! Don't make fun of him, he is my role model. >:)
  • That Slashdot logo is a .gif.

Arg! Jez, practice what you freakin preach, eh?

Maybe someone can enlighten me, why not do jpgs? What's in a format? I realize .png is the best thing since [insert favorite religious figure here], but since 1 out of 3 browsers pukes on it...why not jpegs!?

  • I was thinking that this one wasn't as funny as the last few, but then you did the verbal "M-x spook" while talking about Echelon. The Dr. Strangelove reference didn't quite work as an Echelon keyword, but it knocked me off my chair anyway. ROTFLMAO.

Also, I can't quite believe you did that "Linux Business Expo" ad at the beginning, though I guess it was a respectable sponsor, and you did read it with a sufficiently comical tone that we can still take you as seriously as we always have. I don't suppose you'd tell us what 40 seconds of "Geeks in Space" air-time costs?

Moving on: the sound quality is improved, though I'm not so sure about the new intro music. I think I like the longer episode -- basically, the more, the better. One might have worried that it would get tired when you went past the usual 10 minutes, but I don't think it did, even at 20 minutes, though it still might if you go much past that. There's always more to talk about than there is time, so you can just cover more, and not have to rush. However, some parts were a bit on the dull side. I know, we've been asking for more serious analysis and less joking around, and now that you've done so, I'm (predictably enough) criticizing again, but I like the jokes, and I think you went just a bit past "perfect" and toward "too serious". Just back up a little bit toward "too silly" and you should hit "perfect" again somewhere in the middle.

  • You know how "Ask Slashdot" stories are in gray? Same thing. Some catagories of stories have been pulled out into separate sections to decrease the sheer number of items that hit the front page, and some of the sections are color-coded to indicate their status.

By the way, it looks kind of funny with the Slashdot logo on top in the standard "#006666" green and the rest of the page in black. Taco and co. might want to consider making separate versions of the Slashdot logo images to match each color-coded section. Of course, in this case, it wouldn't work against the black background -- maybe black isn't the best color to code a section. I nominate orange, like "#bb4400".

  • I thought, and I was going to say to you, that the actual "Burn all GIFs Day" had not happened yet (the 8th came to mind as the official date), which would have been a reasonable excuse for not having done it yet. However, I just checked [slashdot.org] and I was wrong -- it was the 5th, which was yesterday, so you're right. What's up? I guess it's still possible that they just haven't gotten around to it yet; after all, it's only the next morning, and a weekend at that.

Then again, they could have decided not to participate. I seem to recall some people bringing what they claimed was a voice of sanity to the discussion, e.g., pointing out that Unisys is not shaking down everyone who uses GIFs, but only those using GIFs created with unlicensed-LZW-algorithm-using software. I guess that's a good point, but the issue is still over the format/algorithm's non-freeness. I'm not knowledgeable enough about such things to have an opinion of my own, so I just believe whoever on Slashdot makes his argument sound the most sarcastically witty.

I realize that "Dudes in space" is a video stream, and that there are no really open video stream formats, (any better-coders-than-me want to create the Gnu Image/Video Encrypted Stream (cool acronym huh? ;-) )) but must "Geeks in Space only be offered in Windows Media Format and Real Video?

Yes, real video IS available... but it is close as all hell...

it would be nice if a .mpg that has been verified to play on xanim (not the most open program to begin with) would also be distributed...

  • I as well noticed the ad. Not only did I notice it, but I'm extremely dissapointed. While I understand the neccessity for advertisements, I've already had it up to here with adfu. (Put's the Slo in SLashdOwt) Don't get me wrong, I love the show, but this is quite honestly a little much.
  • Are you objecting to the very presence of realaudio? I could understand if you were, but there is an MP3 version, which supposedly could stream (if I had phone wiring less than 28 years old), according to the text next to the link.

  • For the geeks crew: You guys have got to solve a bet for us...pronounce vi(1) on the air.
  • made more money this last year by a factor of two over every "respectable" media personality. He also interacts with pr0n stars on a daily basis, if that's what you're looking for in life, he's a solid role model....
  • I wish they'd post higher quality versions for those of use with faster connections.

  • Geeks in Space is definately the best radio show out there. Rob, can I guest host?
  • I said it once, I will say it again;

CowboyNeal HAS to be Tom Servo in disguise. Now that MST3K is off the air, and is out of work, Servo went to work for BSI and his smooth radio voice put him in such high standings on Geeks in Space.

That can be the only conclusion.

Aside: What boat do you use in HydroThunder [hydrothunder.com]?

    I use Tidal Blade myself.

  • ergh.. was this info. about the matrix sequels posted earlier on??
give me a website/news article please:)
  • Um, they do have an MP3 version. The link's right next to the RealAudio link on the page, there's a streaming version and a downloadable version (the downloadable version is at http://mp3-2.thesync.com/geeks12.mp3 [thesync.com].
  • 1. I noticed the Linux World Expo ad, and I can't help but to hear how the name "Linus Torvalds" is pronounced "Lee-nus Torvalds."

    2. About Rob showing his radio butt: Well, if he actually eats tacos, don't let him do it! Either way, just don't let him do it!

    3. Duhhhh... do I get any memory benefits if I listen to Eminem? Dr. Dre did a piece called "Guilty Conscience" with Eminem in the Slim Shady LP. That was cool, and stuff.
  • I don't know about you, but I really think that the easy listening music has to go. And as mentioned earlier, it wouldn't be a bad thing to have some female input for your "show"...

  • Solution... get a grrl on "staff"!

  • I really like this one, one of the best yet! Just as i like it, largely offtopic and crazy.
The fact that the show is a bit longer than the previous is just GREAT! I think you should keep it ~20minutes long, it feels more natural and not as "rushed" as before. Oh, if you _must_ have ads, put them at the END!
  • That's exactly what i meant. Ads really sucks.
Annoying to have in the GiS archives, and not really relevant for me (I'm in Sweden).
One whould think they are getting enough money from all the banners. Getting gready perhaps?
    • Tried to click on the Linux Expo ad n your broadcast, but I seem to get only static.
    • Prefer the secondary intro theme (easy listening or not) over the standard Intro Echolalia. How about a new starting musical interlude each week?

    -------------------------------------------
  • Are you being serious?

Just seems a litle ironic if you read your .sig
  • Because geeks in space is special
  • Well, since there seems to be a fuzz around GIS, I tried my frenchie's ear at it.. well is there a text transcript anywhere :( --
  • I think everyone is missing the boat!
Grab a version of embedded Linux, an LCD panel, and a few other parts and make your own. That's what a real geek would do. And besides, you could probably even sell it and make some money in the long run.
  • They're not that stupid. If the ads were at the end you wouldn't listen!
  • Yes! The excellent Dune crap got my ROTF. Well done.

Rest of the show was pretty cool too.
    --
  • you got some real issues... i can dig it.
  • Stern's your role model? I'm sorry.
  • You know, my mom (a big Kevin Costner fan) always told me that the naked butt in Costner's "Robin Hood" movie was a stunt butt.
