eldavojohn writes "While the number of cases dropped, the amount of money lost to fraud reached an all-time high a new government report states. "According to the 2007 Internet Crime Report, the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) received 206,884 complaints of crimes perpetrated over the Internet during 2007. Of the complaints received, more than 90,000 were referred to law enforcement around the nation, amounting to nearly $240 million in reported losses. This represents a $40 million increase in reported losses from complaints referred to law enforcement in 2006." Hilariously enough, the top ruses used by the fraudsters were pets, romance and secret shoppers. You can find the original report here [Warning! 7.4MB PDF gigantifile]. While the file is painfully huge, there are several interesting graphs in it. The first detailing fraud by type which indicates that the two largest are Auction Fraud with 35.7% and Non-delivery with 24.9%. Or their odd spiking of certain months for reported cases. Most losses (41.5%) are in the $100-$1k range with the next highest (30.7%) being in the $1k-$5k range. 75% of the perpetrators are males. California tops the state as having the most perpetrators — by population it's D.C. though. The US and UK rank in the top two spots as hosts to the perpetrators. They then do the same breakdowns by complaints. There really is a wealth of data in this report."

Well, Jim, I'm not much of an actor either.
