Barence writes "DRM is not much loved, but the real perils of its long-term use have only recent begun to come to light. With vinyl or CD you knew where you stood: you bought the album or the single and, provided nobody lost, stole or scratched it, your music would still play in ten years' time. In the digital download age, however, that can't be taken for granted. Even though consumers hate it and many industry insiders admit it doesn't do its job, DRM remains a major part of the online music buying experience. But with several major services simply switching off its DRM servers this year, it's becoming a more pressing issue than ever before. Should legitimate buyers really be punished in an attept to deter the pirates who will always circumvent DRM anyway? This feature looks at DRM and its many perils."
