zzptichka writes "Hard drives are the only components in modern computers that have moving parts inside. Sure enough they tend to fail more often than other units. By their nature they produce different kinds of noises during normal operation and most people might not even realize their hard drive is failing until data becomes corrupted or the drive goes clicking like crazy failing to identify in the computer.
However, there are some signs which can help you identify a faulty hard drive before it is too late. Guys at datacent.com have compiled typical sounds from around 30 different failing and dying hard drives on their website. Sounds like those degrading heads make while trying to locate servo or spindle that's about to get stuck completely or scratching sounds heads produce when hitting bad sectors will help you diagnose the problem and back up your data before it's too late."
