Feature:Zeal, Advocacy, and the Future of Linux 185

Joe Shaw has sent us a feature on a topic that is near and dear to many of our hearts: Linux advocacy. Specifically related to the recent mindcraft email posting, and practically any journalist who writes an article with a non-glowing comment about Linux, and the hoards that swoop down and proceed to shove them through a cuisinart. Hit the link to read it.

Mindcraft Posts Linux Hate Mail 442

drwiii wrote in to tell us that Mindcraft has posted a few choice responses by Linux zealots. Quite offensive- don't read it you're pure of heart. <SERMON> I get CC'd on this stuff a lot so I knoW that these are not only real, but they are only scratching the surface of the crap that lands in the INBOX of anyone on the Internet who breaths anything that isn't glowing about Linux. And I'm embarassed by it. Please remember that how you say something is often more important than what you say. But in messages like these, what you said was childish and offensive, and you make us all look like raving loonies. This doesn't hurt Microsoft or help advance Linux-- in fact it does quite the opposite. Please Please Please read the Linux Advocacy HOWTO. Bad advocacy killed OS/2, The Amiga, and still threatens the Mac- don't let this happen to Linux. </SERMON>

Amiga Reveals Future Design Plans 153

DrPsycho writes "The folks at Amiga International have put out some information about where their next generation computer systems might be headed. Jim Collas president of Amiga, gives a few tidbits in his ">Executive Update, but to cut to the juicy bits... they've posted concept drawings for their "next generation mulitmedia computer" due out in late Q4 of this year. These concepts look suspiciously like PalmPilots and iMacs, if you ask me. "

Nanomagnets for Hard Drives 58

Single GNU Theory writes "Scientists at Cornell have developed magnets so tiny they could be used to create standard form-factor hard drives with terabyte capacities. All they need is a way to read and write them fast. Check it out here. Hmmm... That'd require 250 Amiga Fast File System partitions! "

Amiga Comeback? 169

An anonymous reader sent us linkage to a fairly lengthy ZD Net story on Amiga and its "Comeback" (if you're keeping count, this is approximately the 293 thousanth time someone has suggested an Amiga comeback). They talk about Amiga 'net appliances and low cost Amiga PCs.

Amiga Development Update 130

Anonymous Coward writes "Looks like Amiga are stepping up the pace for their next gen machines - This article explicitly states "new machines before the New Year", and an ex-vice president of Gateway, Jim Collas is heading the Amiga subsidiary. QNX/Neutrino is the OS core, but still no word on the CPU. Check out Amiga Corporate News for more information. "

Introducing Linux 2.2 119

Joseph Pranevich has written up an excellent piece on Linux 2.2 where he practically sums up the major features of the new kernel. This will be quite useful to any of you who are curious, but haven't been reading LinuxHQ every patch for the last year. Related, 2.2.0ac1 is now out.

Further aMozilla Developments 22

DrPsycho writes "Just a quick follow up to the previous article that appeared on slashdot about the development of aMozilla, the Mozilla port for the Amiga. The people behind the project have started posting screenshots of the Navigator layout under AmigaOS, and the look & feel of Messenger. News about the project is available here. They've also started an eZine about aMozilla. Looks like it might be more than vapour after all. "

Project aMozilla 28

An Anonymous Coward writes "The aMozilla Project has been established with the sole aim of porting Netscape 5 Communicator to the Amiga Platform. Two versions will be made, a 68k port and a PowerPC port. You can find more information here. "

KOSH - Kommunity Operating System & Hardware

Hasse writes "Here is a project that I think you might find interresting. It's called KOSH - Kommunity Operating System & Hardware, and is an effort to establish an os and hardware standard defined and developed by the community. As far as I understand, it's supposed to be run commercially, but owned by the community. There's a whole lot of text on kosh.net, expressing the thoughts and ideas of the founders. Supporters of the project include, amongst others, former Commodore and Amiga employees like hardware guru Dave Haynie and Fleecy Moss. "

ESCENA Announces New G3 PowerPC Boards

Wayne Martin writes "ESCENA announces new G3 PowerPC boards! Germany Company ESCENA have anounced some new PowerPC G3 cards for the Amiga range of computers. The G3 cards are capable of supporting 1 or 2 CPUs from 2 33Mhz to 400Mhz. Each card supports the WarpUP system by Hagge&Partner, including their 68k emulator. Cards are expected to be shown around Christmas. This is just one of the many new developments for the Amiga computer. "

AmigaOS kernel partner is QNX!

Joshua Galun writes "Amiga Inc. announced on Friday at the Computer 98 show in Cologne, Germany, that the company QNX (makers of the QNX OS) will be their kernel partners for the upcoming AmigaOS 5. QNX claims that their OS is the premier realtime OS for PCs, plus it's multiplatform. There's no word of this on Amiga Inc's nor QNX's web page yet, but it has been verified by the Amiga Web Directory News section". QNX is a version of Unix optimized for size, and apparently has a nice driver model.

Fred Moody speaks about Amigas past and future

TB writes "Its an article about Amiga, which at the end talks about MS and Red Hat getting a run for their money. The article isnt very accurate, but its a interesting read anyway. Its a prestory to the news to follow this weekend."

Amiga4 News

Clark Shishido writes " MacWeek has rumors on Gateway's plans for AmigaOS 4.0. sounds like the good old days when Amigas could run Mac software faster than a Mac. Also note the irony that it might boot BeOS which is Gasse's Mac-Amiga succesor. Maybe this will knock some sense into Apple that it has to innovate and compete instead of killing clones. I'm not an Amiga head, and I'll probably be editting makefiles for compiling under MacOS X, but I think that it's good that Apple can't be complacent. " Update (S) Apparently this information may not have been completely true, but a practical joke. Oh well.

Amiga OS Creator Releases Programming Language

frokost writes "The creator of Amiga OS, Carl Sassenrath has released a new programming language, REBOL. This seems like an interesting language with a differnet philosophy. " I've been checking out a page of code examples. It definately has strange syntax, but it looks pretty interesting. It would take a miracle to get me to give up Perl though.

Amiga Makes The News

Lonnold Hendrickson wrote in to send us a like to a CMPNet article on the Amiga's Comeback Attempts. The Amiga is like the Energizer bunny. Still going. Thump Thump Thump. I'd love to see a comeback though I'm not counting on it.
