Tenchi on Cartoon Network 143

sew2902 writes "If you didn't know, the aforementioned Tenchi Muyou series is going to be on the Cartoon Network. Theres an article over at Media Junkies that talks about it, including the fact that it will be censored." Tenchi is among my favorite anime series, but they'll definitely have to edit it for TV since there is the occasional nude scene. The article itself talks about Cartoon Networks increased anime content. I've been hoping they'd create a Toonami channel to counterpart their Boomerang channel: I figure somewhat censored anime is better then none at all. Oh, and the next episode of Cowboy Bebop is now out: my copy should arrive today or tomorrow: I'm stoked about this one.

Especialy that cute little Rio-oh-ki [xoom.com] but what is done to these anime on Cartoon Network is a shame, DBZ [cjb.net] has become a Joke because of over censorship, The Netork never lets the viewers know that Sailor Moons new friends are actualy lesbians and now Tenchi will be censored. I agree that Censored anime is better than no anime and wish that if CN did make an anime network they wouldn't try to market it only to kids, that way they could show more uncut shows.
At least with Gundam W they did it right.

I noticed that, once in awhile you where able to catch some chessy anime on the sci fi channel at about 4 in the morning on tuesday nights, and for a long time that was about all there was. Everytime I fliped to cartoon network in the last month, I have gotten loads of sweet juicy anime! Mmmmmm
  • Hentai TV? It probably exists in Japan... Nice point about the nudity vs. violence thing. Where is the Grammer Nazi when you need him?
  • I always figured it was better than being some obsessive stat-memorizing never-missing-a-game sports freak.
  • Well, that's a given. Buying the DVD and watching it subbed is always a preferable option to watching it on TV, and getting ahold of a fansubbed version is even better. But I don't think anybody can expect a TV release to be watchable.

    Here's my [radiks.net] DeCSS mirror. Where's yours?

  • but the average Eurofilm bites.
So does the average american film, hell even the better ones suck (OTOH, I think just about every movies sucks...)
    Sorry for ranting

  • I am not at all in favor of censorship; the difference in content between (for your example) the subtitled and dubbed Sailor Moon movies is absolutely shameful.

Dare I say, "no duh!"? That's why I excluded it from the list of anime that are un-bitchworthy.

I'm not a SM fan, but I do enjoy DBZ, and it's pretty shameful that people are *still* bitching and starting petitions to FUNimation about the horrible DBZ dub, when hybrid DVDs are now being released (with rave reviews, I might add).

My point is merely that if the anime is available uncut commercially, it's pretty pathetic to complain about the TV version. Do we do this when mainstream movies get edited for network play? Of course not, we take three steps to Blockbuster.

That being said, however, it is worth noting that it is not necessarily the case that dubbed anime is less faithful to the original text than subtitled anime. [snip whoring]

Well, that's my fault, because I tend to group "subtitled" with "uncut". And I do agree with your essay for the most part; I wouldn't mind watching good dubs for lightweight shows like Ranma or Tenchi (both of which are pretty good dubs). But for something that I truly love, (Shoujo Kakumei Utena, at the moment), I'd be up in arms if it were only available dubbed, no matter how good the dub was.

  • Amazing, amazing anime! The DVD transfer is almost flawless, and the show even makes sense! To top it off, it's about bounty hunters in space! I'm going to order mine today. And speaking of anime that's just been released, the Rurouni Kenshin DVD's are out too!
  • Right. So, do you take her to showings of bruce willis movies? No. Has she seen Demi Moore's Striptease yet? No. If they were totally reedited and chopped up for tv, would you want her watching it then?

They're taking serious, comlpete, humorous adult series then twisting them into kiddie stories. All because people just don't understand what's for children and what's not, and that the dividing line is more then just ink vs. the camera.
  • Oh, you're a riot.
Amerika is a sick culture striving to export it's legislated puritanism worldwide in an effort to justify their own disease
And we're doing a damned good job of it.
Probably not as good as you seem to think, but you are trying real hard.
American entertainment is loved the world over. Including Europe. The Europeans won't admit it, but the box office doesn't lie.
Hah. Yeah right. Care to quote the Euro box office figures for, say Bride of Chuckie? Didn't think so. Jazz music was about the only marketable entertainment product amerika ever produced, and since they've quit making that the m arkets have pretty well dried up. The other two entertainment products that are commonly thought to be popular amerikan exports -- comics and soap operas -- have been usurped by better made products from other nations. Face it, amerikan art and entertainment is a wash. You pathetic fucks have no culture. You're too busy beating the hell out of anybody you don't agree with to do anything else. You haven't even managed to add anything to the practice of sex. You're all too damned afraid of it to do anything with it except use it to sell soap.
By the way, the oh-so-civilized residents of other countries might want to put their own houses in order before condemning the American "culture of violence". Does Sarajevo ring a bell? How about Dachau? The rape of Nanking? The Ukraine under Stalin? The killing fields in Cambodia? Rwanda? The Spanish Inquisition? The Crusades?
So you're comparing these atrocities with the violence perpetrated against amerikan children by the entertainment industry? I like it. Wish I'd thought of it. Yes, I would have to agree, the scale of damage done is similar. I think the amerikan version will be more effective in altering human behavior over the long term, though. Amerika likes to engage in atrocity while calling it 'entertainment', which sells better than 'the spanish inquisition'...
The only incidents of comparable magnitude that happened here are the mistreatment of Native Americans and African slavery, though I've always wondered why the U.S. has to take the full blame for those. The Spanish, French, Dutch, and English did much of that damage long before the United States even existed. America learned its brutality at the knee of its European forebears, though, unlike Europe, we seem to have evolved since then.
If you consider that learning to turn a progressively blinder eye to your own shortcomings is evolution, yes, I suppose you have.

I would also point out that the only reason amerika "won" is that they are better at brutality. In a contest of brutality, the most brutal wins... there's quote about that, but I don't recall it precisely.

Tell ya what... when Europe, Asia, and Africa manage to go a full twenty years (or even ten) without some kind of genocide/government-sponsored mass murder THEN you can start preaching morality to the United States.
Well, first of all, I was comparing nations, not continents or hemispheres; typically amerikan that the concept seems to have gone right over your head.

Secondly, I'll "preach" any damn thing I please to amerika, or anyone else. Isn't that one of the values you so hypocritically mouth to your own citizens: Freedom of Speech?

You, as so many amerikans, apparently believe so strongly in your own righteousness that you feel you are immune to the moral contraints that are necesary to humanity. Amerika is the one trying to export their legislated "morality", their "let the kids see the brains get splattered but make sure everyone is fully clothed" idiocy.

Until then we'll just keep bailing your asses out every time you take a notion to start slaughtering each other.
Somalia. We don't want your 'bail-outs'. News flash, patriot boy: In countries that understand the use of language, US foriegn policy is quite accurrately called "imperialism", to wit
the policy, practice, or advocacy of extending the power and dominion of a nation especially by direct territorial acquisitions or by gaining indirect control over the political or economic life of other areas; broadly : the extension or imposition of power, authority, or influence
It's hard to believe trogs like you still exist, with your 'might-makes-right', hyper-patriotic bullshit. Put your own house in order; the global community doesn't want your mess on their carpets.

The real 3 things amerika does well: Violence, Puritanism, and Spin.

  • Fucked up shit does not a good cartoon make. You also state that "The stories are long, complicated ...and usually have one theme: love conquers all." Long, complicated stories do not a good story make, in and of themselves, regardless of what the theme is. You fail to make any convincing argument as to the virtue of anime.

I'm not saying that anime is crap, I'm just saying I fail to see what's so great about it. Just for the record I grew up in Taiwan where anime is the ONLY thing they show in what is the US equivalent of Saturday morning cartoons.
  • I like anime, but it isn't always the greatest thing. In my experience, the people that hate anime only hate it because they make their perception by what shows up on US TV:

Robotech (hacked version of three shows to tell a story that wasn't originally there)
    Voltron (two shows in anthology)
StarBlazers (mildly hacked version of a Yamato TV show)
Sailor Moon (hey, this show was made with girls in mind, OK?)
    DragonBall Z
    Speed Racers
    Pokemon
    Digimon

If one is basing your opinion of all anime based on any one or more of these shows, you need to see what is really, out there, as this is hardly 1% of what is available. I have on numerous occasions changed someones' mind by loaning a few tapes from my collection. Granted, they don't all become fans, but at least it shows them that it isn't all crap, it is simply another form of entertainment.

And deud, lpease porof reda yoru writings.
  • The Tenchi Muyo series has been my absolute favorite anime/television show and to my dismay Cartoon Network **BUTCHERED** it. Cheezy painted on bathing suits, cuts of entire scenes, etc. I am just glad I can watch it on DVD :)
  • deud calm down, liek, you shouldn't be offended at other people's tastes. to each his own, ok? an anime subject would be good for those who liek teh anime, who can see that it is an anime story, and for those people who don't like anime, so they can block anime stories. why do you want everyone to hace teh same tastes as you? can you imagine how boring teh world would be if everyone everywhere liekd all teh same stuff? ok bye.

    loev,

  • Tenchi is among my favorite anime series, but they'll definitely have to edit it for TV since there is the occasional nude scene.

What is with this country? we can't even show nude cartoons on tv, I don't understand why we can't show nude people on prime time. Is it really bad for children to see nudity? I think not, I've been to several European countries where they have nude gameshows on primetime, I don't think it warps the minds of children.
  • I dunno - I liked the old OAVs but I'm not terribly amazed about this. They _ought_ to be showing Cowboy Bebop (I recv'd disc three today - neener neener, Rob) although with better voices for Spike and Faye if it were dubbed.

At least I taped Reboot off of there back when I had cable. That was such a cool show once they finally got a good story arc going.

As for that episode of Dexter's Lab, yeah, that's easily the best parody of Speed Racer ever. It's in the same league as Mecha-Streisand is for Godzilla movies.
  • Sorry, but I don't believe that one could seriously consider Sailor Moon to be adult entertainment. Yes, there are some small portions that portray adult themes, but overall, let's be serious; it appeals to my 4 year old daughter.

I'm not saying that's true about all anime, or even most anime - but you must admit, Sailor Moon is about as silly as silly gets, my daughter enjoys it immensely. I'm not talking about editing the gory scenes out of Akira. (which *would* piss me off, and I don't think my kids will be watching that particular movie until at least age 13)

And no, I wasn't going to take her to see Bruce Willis' "The Kid" either. . . ;-)

if it ain't broke, then fix it 'till it is!
  • it was a pun. despite the fact that I dislike tenchi, I tend not to whine about what is posted, and what isn't :-)
  • Well, compared to the pogroms, genocides, serfdom, and murdering in the name of religion prevalent on your continent, I think I'll keep our "sick" culture, thanks.
This is the crux of your argument: "My country, right ot wrong." I've always found that a bit lame, but a lot of amerikan politicians seem to have gotten a lot of mileage out of getting your young men to buy it...
Care to quote the Euro box office figures for Titanic?
[etc] Hah. And the fingures this week? How many amerika films placed? 2? 3? How many amerikan films from the action and horror genres placed? How many amerikan films with non Euro-centric content placed? You argument is lame, and you know it. Else why would you have to reach back to Titanic for your figures?

Face it, amerikan art and entertainment is a wash. You pathetic fucks have no culture.
Well, apparently the movie-goers in France disagree. Sorry about that.
Well, if you think Titanic is culture, you're in worse shape than I thought. Furthermore, a quick glance at the Ecran Noir [ecran-noir.com] for this week shows that you are hoist by your own petard. French taste is evidently somewhat better than you insinuate... So you're comparing these atrocities with the violence perpetrated against amerikan children by the entertainment industry? I like it.
You know, most people in this country know the difference between fiction and reality.
I'd be highly ammused to watch you try to prove that one. Start by getting a concensus on the definition of 'reality'.

It is impossible to "perpetrate violence" with a movie.
If you cannot understand the violence inherent in the brainwashing distributed by Hollywood under the guise of 'entertainment', then you are an a victim and an idiot to boot, and we really have no basis for discussion.
The only country mentioned in your original post was "Amerika". I was under the impression that to have a comparision one must have more than one of the entities under consideration. You mentioned no other country, but you did mention "the civilized nations of the world". I'm fascinated. Why don't you name one of these soi-disant "civilized" nations for us.
I bet you are fascinated. Easily entertained, too. Again, you show the typical amerikan weaknesses in your lack of reasoning skills. Trying thinking something through for yourself, for a change. I don't name them because there's really no reason to. Your efforts to defame the rest of the world don't make amerika suck any less. Get used to it.
So tell me, how are we trying to "export" this morality? By making movies and TV shows, then going to Europe (or wherever) and forcing the audience to watch at gunpoint or something?
First you try to claim amerika *is* exporting movies in a big way, then you ask me to prove amerika is exporting morality. Do you see no connexion between morality and art? [I will be charitable and allow the claim that amerikan film and/or tv is Pop Art for the sake of answering that one]

I'll let you try that one before we get into things like american pressure to criminalize marijuana in the netherlands, amerika protests against prostitution in denmark, amerikan destruction of food crops by the introduction of untried genetically modified seed, the amerikan assaults on islamic culture in the mideast, etc, etc, etc. All these are export of culture.

The current planned victim is China. You pathetic amerikan sheep sit over there and cry that it's not happening; "No-no, we are a Democracy," you say, "we must keep the world safe for democracy, even if it means destroying everything else." You have all already been screwed out of anything resembling culture by the Big Wanking Commerical Interests(tm), and you take vindictive pleasure in watching the BWCI's destroy other cultures.

Yeah, until one of your neighbors starts rolling across your border with tanks, or building a few gas chambers, or starts murdering and raping those of a different religion or ethnicity.
You are reciting your rationalizations for your imperialist wars; these are meaningful only to you. Your practice of ascribing to others the motivations which serve your own aggresive nationalistic desires is pretense. Amerikas only agenda is to destroy that which it cannot understand. In fact, your posts here on this subject are a good example of that.

The difference between a wise man and a fool is that the wise man can learn from the fool.

  • That would be nice, but what would they put on there? I'm sure it would all be the dubbed versions, and I wouldn't be able to watch that. It's a real shame what American distributers do to Anime before releasing it here.

You could use the SAP audio track for the original Japanese audio.
  • The big problem with a dedicated anime channel is that you have to find a happy medium between what the HardCore fans want and what the more casual audiences want... Most casual fans want anime to be easily accessible, meaning dubs.. Most hardcore fans, like myself, prefer the original Japanese with English subtitles. A lot of people get very very rabid over that.

There is already a SAP audio track (normally used for Spanish and such) which can be used for the original Japanese audio.
  • Wait... did you hit the button twice, taco?
    luckman
  • he did

    its true its true

  • And DBZ on DVD doesn't even include the original Japanese audio track! Thats low.

Speaking of low, The Mouse is doing the same thing with Mononoke Hime. /. was kind enough to post a story about it, though it was the week AFTER the petition was sent in. Oh well, more money for Ranma DVDs...

  • They are "editing it a little bit" for content. The Cartoon Network is a family channel and many parents would not like their kids seeing even cartoon nudity.
  • Now it's every night at 12 and saturday morning at 9(ish?).

SciFi shows them now and again, saturday/sunday afternoon.

The other day I saw Judge on IFC. Weird.

    -jpowers
  • I don't think this is what they meant by alternate universe.
  • Right. Only Governments can censor. Since these corporations have control of Congress and the press, the corporate sector is a de facto government body, and its "editing" is really censorship. The fact that it has no constitutional basis is irrelevant.

    -jpowers
  • Before you go off ranting about how this will "corrupt" those poor children

Relax, man. No one is ranting. Most Americans think it's pretty stupid too. It's mostly a minority of puritanical prudes who think they need to uphold the rest our morals.

  • Really, it's not surprising that Americans are censoring all the anime's that come across from Japan. Japanese culture is quite different from ours, they are more open about nudity and sexuality. This is evidenced through the the public baths, as well as character relationships in various Anime. (many more lesbians & gays in anime than in american shows).

Anime isn't just meant for children in Japan. Yes, there are some anime shows for children (ie, Pokemon), but there are easily just as many for Adults or people inbetween.

Just another distinction between Japanese and American culture...

In America: someone from another country is called a foreigner. If that person knows our language, then they're (usually) called a tourist.

In Japan, someone from another country is called gaijin (foreigner). And someone from another country who bothers to learn they language and their customs, is called hanna gaijin (weird foreigner).

Note: the above is from memory... if I got it wrong, either wrong word, or wrong spelling, I appologize now.

  • This is very strange - now I'm getting messages about "the server encountered an internal misconfiguration" and was logged out of slash!

Rob, please fix the bugs... Perhaps you need a second server setup to do upgrades on before moving the main server over? It's very wude to the rest of us.

  • Where is the Grammer Nazi when you need him?

i hace captured herr dikwanker and made him made him mow teh lawn for me. i am using teh extra time to install teh slackware 7.1, cause i just burned teh cd ok bye.

    loev,

  • I'd like to watch uncensored anime. Or for that matter, other content without having some goody two-shoes group whining about the children. We definitely need an X-rated cartoon network for anime and the occasional feature film like "Fritz the Cat."

Most anime would also be deemed too violent for the bland American youth of today (Who apparently can't even handle a Harry Potter story without wetting themselves.) I remember watching Anime in Okiniawa when I was 4 or 5 where scenes were depicted of people being impaled, which would make american censors squeal like a stuck pig.

    Here ends the semi-rant.

  • Its surfer/skater slang for "excited about" see also "amped"
  • Yup, anime chicks rock. I think the attraction is along the same lines a Laura Croft. And those soft porno anime (Goku Midnight Eye, Wicked City, ect...) are good enough to make people think twice about thinking of anime as just a cartoon.
  • Hey man,,, tenchi has been on cartoon network for a couple of weeks. And the third cowboy bebop was released on the 4th of July. Get up to date buddy.
  • I'd suggest Washu - from the OVA - with her glasses on ... that picture just screams slashdot (well, to me at least - LOL!).

I second that. Washu rules. Always liked the geeks in TV.

(Not that this is always a good thing. I thought Wesley Crusher was cool at first.)
  • Try learning to read. I didn't say that America was perfect, just that it sucked less than Europe.
On the contrary, I think once you have learned to read you will find that you went considerably beyond that. You will also find, once you have actually read what you quoted, that I didn't say you claimed your so-called country was perfect. I will say it again, since you obviously missed it the first time: The crux of your argument is "My country, right or wrong."

Since you are weak on reading comprehension, I will explain: It means that you back your countries actions and policies regardless of whether they are right, and regardless of whether or not you believe they are right. That is the basis for pretty much everything you have posted in this thread, whether or not you choose to admit to it. It is understandable that you might wish to deny it, since it is such an obviously sheep-like mentality, but the fact it, your arguments depend from it, directly.

Some of us take don't take our morality from movies.
Liar. You just don't care to admit it.
If you think we give a fuck about the Netherlands or Denmark, you're even more deluded than I thought.
Heh. No, you can rest your fevered little brain. I know better than to think amerikans care about anything past the edges of the tv screens. You have missed the point
You're pretty good at mouthing the party line, aren't you?
I don't know ... which party do you imagine that might be? I really think it is you who is mouthing a party line. Republican Party, it sounds like.

For the record, I have no party affiliation. There's a couple that might wish they could claim me, but I have not endorsed any of them, thank you very much.

You don't seem to have noticed, but the Cold War is over. Your side lost. Deal with it.
I understand that to you, being amerikan, it is very important that there be a 'War', and that anyone who doesn't agree with you be on the other 'side', and that you 'win', and that I 'lose'. This is very typical of amerikans, and I don't really hold it against you, but in order that you not look like idiots to the rest of us, it would be in your own best interests of you could learn to think in other terms.

Whether or not your alleged war is over (about as important to me as the Netherlands seems to be to you) the US continues its imperiallistic behavior and attitudes. Your posts here are proof of this.

  • That last bit about Disney is utter bullshit.
    Bust him!!!!!!!!!!!

Disney shows its ineptitude well enough with the anime they have, let's not give them any more.

    -jpowers
  • That's my point. A lot of Americans have in their heads that animated==for children. Possibly because everything animated form America is for children. I don't know why that is, but that's how it is here. And I'd bet most of these American distributers of Anime have this atitude, which is why crap like this happens.

    Here's my [radiks.net] DeCSS mirror. Where's yours?

  • Any way you group culture, 90% of it is garbage, and another 9% are only for the hardcore fan. What you have here is a board full of hardcore fans, and, well...you.

Seriously, if you have the time, read Scott McCloud's [scottmccloud.com] Understanding Comics. Not only is it a great read, it goes into what makes Japanese comics different than American ones, a difference that carries over into animation. The average work of anime is much more sophisticated visually than its average American counterpart. This includes works in all genres. They demand much more of the viewer's attention visually and slightly more plot-wise.

Most people who like anime are spoiled after watching great work like Vampire Princess Miyu (horror), Ranma 1/2 (comedy), Miyazaki, etc...

Many people who dislike anime are really thinking of the garbage we were exposed to as kids (though I always liked Star Blazers... nothing to compare it to at age 4). Artless, poorly translated, badly dubbed, hacked to pieces, how could anyone expect us to develop an appreciation for it?

It's amazing some of us did, and unlike the vicious and stupid way we tend to circle the wagons around linux, those of us who love anime like nothing better than sharing what we like.

The only real answer I can give your question is: Look at the early 90s Conan-era Simpsons, and understand that a lot of that was being done TEN YEARS EARLIER in Japan. The show Urusei Yatsura is still a tough sell to people who saw the original artist's somewhat more intricate later Ranma 1/2 series, but the interplay between both multiple joke "threads" and between those "threads" and the spoken/acted/background-derived punchlines was way ahead of its time in an otherwise innocuous sitcom. Certain aspects of modern anime remain ten years ahead of american productions, in the same way modern american film productions look ten years ahead of films from most other countries.

On top of all that, remember this: the anime we're sitting here talking about now (what's "new to us") was shown in Japan years ago. The modern american otaku (like me) has only the smallest awareness of what the real breadth of Japanese animation looks like today, so we lose both the stuff that's so bad it doesn't come across and some of the hidden gems, which we can only conjecture exists based on past experience with the exported art of other cultures. We see only the top 5% of what comes over, so everything looks good to us. Well, almost everything, DBZ kind of sucks, visually.

  • You must UNDERSTAND the ending to like it. 'nuff said
  • Eh? Sailor Goon?

Nonono... nonono... nonono... yes, Sailor Moon is a good anime - BUT - the image of Sailor Moon is .. well, as I said - Sailor Goon. It sucks in the US. That dub gives Anime a bad .. bad .. bad name.

Bad, that's too light of a word for it.

lol. I'd suggest Washu - from the OVA - with her glasses on ... that picture just screams slashdot (well, to me at least - LOL!).

    perfect perfect.

    But, that's my suggestion.

Or maybe even Kaoru (Kaoru - Rurouni Kenshin).. she is perfection.

    bleh.

  • blah blah blah... I just read this entire thread.. your both children... All countries suck for one reason or another... I'm an ameriCan... but I dont really care... I hate our government... they take half my money and enforce some of the lamest laws I can think of... but I cant think of anyplace else that's any better... I'm going to spend the next year looking... but I'd imagine the most freedom is found here... maybe not... we cant legally smoke pot... so thats a minus... but if your rich you can kill people and get away with it... just ask OJ.
  • I think that dued was misspelling his the's on purpose :)
I - must fully agree with you.
Everything on US-TV ... with the exception of Tenchi Muyo ... ( except, that edited bullion is not Tenchi ... IMO ) is pretty trashy.
I've been watching Rurouni Kenshin - great series. I also heard it was going to "come over to the states". I almost vomited when I heard that (Almost ... I had sweet & sour chicken for dinner. Too good to let go of). Things get ruined, dumbed down when they go mainstream. heh. I shouldn't complain. I live in a stupid place. The united states of amoronca (It does not deserve capitalization). lol. So sue me. I hate it here. Yeah, I was born here - yeah, I lived here all my life. But, I take a look around me - I am surrounded by heathens :P ignorant jerks ... etc. What's wrong with this place. Things have to be dumbed down for the "people". Just look what happens when they get the real deal. i.e. CCG - Collectable Card Games - look at these idiot kids. Back when I played - they were fun. A bunch of people who were interesting, smart - fun to be with. Now, a bunch of little bastards who ... are morons. And, on top of it - they go NUTS with the stuff! Stealing, robbing - yeah ... robbing other kids at knifepoint ... lol. Man, this place sucks.

We're all surrounded by morons. Haw. I'm a moron too - for STAYING here ...

  • Hey I had a good laugh when the Powerpuff girls were spoofing Dragonball Z (as well as SW:Epi4).
  • by ACK!! ( 10229 )
Despite the censorship, this is a classic anime and it will be interesting to see the response it gets from traditional early teen Cartoon Network style audiences.

I will wait and see before passing judgement but I really want to see a network grow some balls and put Cowboy Bebop on prime time. That would rock! :-> Yeah, like that would ever happen.

  • I think that my subject says it all. Tenchi has been playing for a while on the Toon Network.

How is it that Mr. Taco is just finding this out now?

...what is done to these anime on Cartoon Network is a shame, DBZ has become a Joke because of over censorship, The Netork never lets the viewers know that Sailor Moons new friends are actualy lesbians and now Tenchi will be censored. I agree that Censored anime is better than no anime...

*sigh*. I'm trying hard to ignore your multiple spelling and grammatical errors. If you don't want to watch censored anime, buy the damn DVDs/subbed VHS!

Tenchi has been out commercially for a while now, so it's not like watching the dub on TV is your only option.

    Gundam W has subbed/uncut DVD.

DBZ is starting to release subbed/uncut DVD.

Sailor Moon...well... I suppose you could bitch about that, but it's not like fansubs are hard to find.

But don't waste your breath on Tenchi.

  • I don't know who you guys really are. Rob have done something wrong, but it's now fixed. Just stop complaining! Anime is pretty cool and I simply love it. You can taste some Anime on the Cartoon Network channel but there are several fansubs that made these animes avaible to everybody, subtitled and original, so you can buy the tapes from them. Also, you could pick some stuff on IRC channels.

Tenshi is a very good Anime and the nudity isn't a big deal. Edited Animes are really bad, I don't like the idea of cutting parts from them... This sucks and must stop :/ Anyway, the CN will not stop with it.

BTW, if you don't like anime, please shut up.
  • Truthfully, I think an anime-only channel should definitely go in the works, not just from CN, but from anyone. It makes economic sense currently, because out of all the film/video industry, I believe that Anime has been growing the fastest. (This is judging from the size of section at video stores and such...) And thanks to CN, even with the censoring, there are more people being exposed to anime. It's becoming more and more feasible for a cable network to start up that could make money and satisfy a want of so many of us. So, to those of you with the money and know-how, here's your opportunity! Just make sure that you leave them uncensored!
  • Umm, I think you're taking it a bit too far there. Cartoon Network has to censor shows like Tenchi, cause if they didn't they'd have throngs of pissed of parents to take care of. American culture may be too uptight about nudity, but it's not a cartoon channel's place to challenge that.

What needs to come along is a channel clued in enought to realize Anime aren't cartoons, and are being targeted to adults just as much as kids. If they had the attitude that "this show is meant for young adults and their parents, not little children," then things would be way better.

    Here's my [radiks.net] DeCSS mirror. Where's yours?

  • The thing that really sets anime apart from most programming is the fact that many series take the time to tell a single story as opposed to more mainstream shows that take fairly thin story premises, tosses their characters into them and then after 30 or 60 minutes, resets everything back to how they were at the beginning of the episode. Star Trek is one of the great examples of this style of TV show creation where something catastrophic happens nearly every episode but nothing permanently bad ever happens to anyone (unless you're a red-shirted ensign) and events seem to have little to no effect on the characters involved.

On the other side we have anime where in many cases, an entire series is built on the telling of a single story. As opposed to the episodic nature of mainstream shows which are self-contained (and easily shuffleable for syndication purposes), episodes in a good series all work towards advancing the story. This focus on a single plotline allows for other aspects of plain old good storytelling to occur; character growth and character relationships. In good anime, characters change and grow, go against what we assume they would normally do, and often become completely different characters by the end of the series. A single plotline also allows for character relationships to be more fully explored, created and changed.

This all comes down to anime being much more dynamic than mainstream series. In the US, a lot of TV programming seems to be focused on a 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' mentality. If the execs find a group of characters that the public likes, they generally keep them the same throughout the show so not to alienate viewers and everything is built around keeping everything the same but creating the illusion that things are different. Good anime series rely on change; that things won't necessarily be the same from one episode to the next and people watch to see what happens next.

Yeah, it's probably not the most cohesive argument in the world but it's the best I can come up quickly.

  • Yeah, I remember the post about Monoke Hime. Then again, it's Disney we're talking about here. That didn't surprise me. But I had a pretty low opinion of Disney to begin with.

    Here's my [radiks.net] DeCSS mirror. Where's yours?

  • Eventually, but I don't speak Japanese well enough to watch raw anime yet. I will, but that's a long way off. I'd still need subtitles to watch it, and until HDTV finally gets here, that's not really possible.

    Here's my [radiks.net] DeCSS mirror. Where's yours?

  • First of all, Tenchi has been on for a while, and was heavily advertised even before that. Second, it has been extensively airbrushed, censored, and some of the dialogue was re-written. Personally, given the skittish nature of most TV censors, I'm surprised that they left Ryoko as a character... Does anyone know just how many episodes Toonami will carry? Some clips seemed to carry footage from more than one Tenchi series. This might still be an interesting story, albeit a week or two late.
  • I saw like 2 or 3 episodes of dexter and p.p. girls with mechas, that destroy tokyo, just because they are on a robot.. Really funny.

    --

  • I've been to several European countries where they have nude gameshows on primetime, I don't think it warps the minds of children.

OF COURSE it warps their minds! Look: they smoke too much, drink too much, f**k too much, they talk funny, eat strange foods (snails! eech!) and they DARE TO THINK THE USA ISN'T THE BE-ALL AND END-ALL OF WONDERFUL PLACES!!! If we don't protect our children from this awful horror, they'll grow up with a tolerant one-world context, with the idea that sex is healthy, and worst of all, believing that the US gov't _shouldn't_ run everything everywhere!

Anyway, who actually WANTED to watch Dennis Franz's cheeks?

Wow. Two posts in two days... all for my favorite little series. First off all, below this is the FAQ as it currently stands. Second, here is the status of the long sought third OVA.

First of all, Tenchi is actually 13 different stories that have the same characters. The story types change from series to series. The OVA series (what is airing right now) is a bit of epic fantasy, sci-fi with sorta family dynamics, the next series that airs (Tenchi Universe or TV) is much more romantic, while Shin Tenchi (Tenchi in Tokyo) is just plain weird and bad.

I talked to Hiroki Hayashi (One of the co-creators of Tenchi Muyo) last week, and he said that AIC is committed to a new series, but director etc has not been picked yet. Masaki Kajishima (the other co-creator) will probibly be it. The only thing we know for sure, is that Hiroshi Negishi (the man who directed the TV series) will not be directing it.

Hiroki Hayashi will be at Nan-Desu-Kon this year. This is a _awesome_ con that takes place in colorado every year. Last year it was one of the best Conventions in the USA with a much better atmosphere then AX (Look at how big we are) and Otakon. He really is a nice guy, and it will be a lot of fun. More info here. [www.ndk.cc]

Anyways, here is Tenchi FAQ (REALLY REALLY BIG). As one huge document. Sorry, it is in word, have not had time to do a proper conversion on it.
Here it is [dimensional.com]. Spoilers be here . (People who read the FAQ last week, the novels section has been updated.

The creators of Tenchi Muyo have gone on to create other great series, such as Sol Bianca, Photon, Dual, El-Hazard, BGC 2040 and many other series.

Please don't bitch about the fact that it is in microsoft word. My linux box needs a new drive.
  • What is with this country? we can't even show nude cartoons on tv, I don't understand why we can't show nude people on prime time. Is it really bad for children to see nudity? I think not, I've been to several European countries where they have nude gameshows on primetime, I don't think it warps the minds of children.
Amerika is a sick culture striving to export it's legislated puritanism worldwide in an effort to justify their own disease. Amerika is a kulture addicted to violence.

Is it any wonder amerikans have to turn to other cultures for arts and entertainment?

What kind of diseased minds concieved the idea that it's okay to show murder on prime time while nudity and sex remains unacceptable?

When was the last time you saw an amerikan prime time television drama that didn't include at least one murder?

Amerikan children are encouraged to watch horror (serial killings), action (maiming, killing, and general carnage as humor), and cops and robbers (plots are thin excuses for random, politically correct violence). They are told that porn (nudity and sex) is bad, and that they must be protected from it.

Is it any wonder that violence is so prevelant in amerikan kulture? Is it any wonder that the civilized nations of the world resist amerika's exportation of the obscenity that passes for entertainment in the US?

    Violence is obscene.

  • I forgot to mention. I am looking for a site that will let me host a automated version of this. I may get a new page this afternoon, but I need hosting recomendations. Any takers? I will probibly install fAQ-o-matic for this.....
  • Yeah... you've missed quite a few episodes by this point, and it's not going to make much sense if you don't see the first few.

I've got them all DivX'd, though... if only I wasn't afraid of lawsuits.
  • Okay, lets make the icon a pic of Sailor Moon. One of the worst playing animes out there . But, for some reason, I have to see it through. Perhaps I am a bit masochistic in that sense...

    Ciao

  • I have watched w/ some interest the cuts that CN has made. The feeling among the veterans is that it could be worse. I do shudder a bit what will happen with Tenchi OVA 13 which is quite amusing w/ regards to the fact that the Emperor has two wives (they removed the hint from OVA 5), but for the most part only Ryouko has taken a hit.

Of course, the funny thing is that she seems much more caring and almost parental now, instead of over-sexed. I imagine that she will have a lot more fans now.
  • At least he has a +1 bonus to abuse. Perhaps if you weren't an Anonymous Coward, someone might care what you think.

It could be said that Tenchi OAV appeals to the "geek nature." Many hidden features and silent plot points make it a story to be STUDIED as well as enjoyed. This is, among other reasons, why I enjoy Tenchi OAV over either TV season.

Some of the finer points listed here:
    - Isn't it interesting that at the end of the first OAV in Tenchi's house we have:
    - Sasami: Join with Tsunami(read: goddess) the source of the wonderful power that has made Jurai the largest space faring empire around.
    - Mihoshi: Grandaughter to the Galaxy Police High Marshal(read: big wig) who either seems to be either the luckiest person in the galaxy or the most intelegent by faking being silly. ^_^
    - Washu: Supposedly the smartest genius in the galaxy(whos only foil is Mihoshi ^_^). At least smart enough to "create" Ryoko and Ryo-ohki who are compariable to anything Jurai has to offer. Maybe has a past with Tsunami...maybe even like Sasami(ie. assimilated)!
    - Aeka: The Crown Princess of Jurai: the most powerful empire in the galaxy. Enuf said. ^_^
    - Ryoko: One the of the most mysterious and powerful things walking around on two legs. Only surpassed by...
    - Tenchi: Has displayed powers on the level most star ships can't generate. Quite possibly the next ruler of Jurai...if he isn't careful. ^_^
So it is quite possible that assembled under one roof on Earth the future power holders of the galaxy if not already the most powerful people ever born. Coincidence? Maybe. ^_^

    - Of course all of this would have been for nothing if Yosho hadn't left Jurai in the first place. Why did Yosho leave Jurai in the first place? He says he couldn't handle the predjudice because he was half human but subtilites point to more. Did Tsunami coax him to go?

    - I've always thought the relationship between Ryoko and Washu would be an excellent subject to go over in a 3rd OAV.

    - Of course one can not ignore the hints suggesting that Ryoko isn't the only child of Washu. Who could the other child be? Maybe its....no...its too silly to say. ^_^

    - The "technology" in Tenchi is interesting too. Jurai technology is very organic where verything appears to be made of their trees(weapons, ships, etc.). Washu's technology appears to be based on crystals. Yet their power seems to work together. This supports the idea that Washu and Tsunami are even closer than any one expected.

    - The Avatar Theory: Tsunami seems to have two sisters? What are they up too? What is Tsunami up too? Why bother "promoting" Jurai? The Avatar Theory is a theory that says that Tsunami is trying to "foster" an Avatar: someone from this universe that can wield their power since it seems that "assimilation" may restrict her power in this universe(if you look at Washu for comparison...assuming she is who we think she is ^_^). Washu may have Ryoko. Tsunami may have Tenchi. Tokimi has....well that is what I'm hoping is revealed in a 3rd OAV. ^_^

Some people say that the OAVs are overly complicated compared to the TV series. I instead say that the TV series dumb things way down. I revel in the insanity of the OAV story that seems to have reason if you look close enough(or maybe I'm just seeing things ^_^). In any event, I enjoy just considering the possiblities in this story much more than any story that has come along. This is why I'm very excited about a 3rd Tenchi OAV with Kajishima writing the story again.
  • If you can make it more than halfway through Neon Genesis Evangelion (hell, if you can watch an entire season of subtitled Sailor Moon) I defy you to say that again.

The stories are long, complicated (for a cartoon anyway) and usually have one theme: love conquers all. Except in Eva. Nobody knows wtf *that* was all about. Turn everybody into orange juice and strangle the only other person on the planet. F*cked up sh*t right there.
  • why is an all-mighty broadcasting company, which is solely responsible to the shareholders, just editing a little bit? effectively, thats much worse censorship than when the elected representatives of the people would pass a constitutional law which bans overdone display of violence in kids computer games. maybe you are right technically: i may still get the full version of a film in the stores. but in reality, AOL/Time-kind of companies have more power to decide what we see, and less restraints to do that, than elected governments. editing is effective censorship.
  • ... it's still not enough. It's unfortunate that they have to censor something as lightweight as Tenchi. Hopefully it will be done thoughtfully, and not butcher the series like Dragonball, the American version of which has been reduced to complete cack.

What we need is one of two things. The first, a privately-owned anime cable network (probably stuck into cable networks as a 'premium' channel), is not going to happen for a long time; the market is just not there to justify the outlay of capital, and production capacities are still not high enough to deal with 24/7 broadcasting without significant percentages of reruns. And then there's that sticky "licensing" thing... @_@

The second option, for networks to pick up some series with content that would not require censorship and yet still provide enough entertainment value to attract audiences across the age ranges, is unlikely, but easier. I'm talking about comedy series like Slayers (yay!), or adventure series like Escaflowne. There's still the licensing issue, but if you factor in the fact that they won't have to pay anyone to edit "objectionable" material out of the tapes, then it probably would come up attractive in terms of advertising profits. Maybe an e-mail or dead-tree-letter or two might open their eyes to this.

Of course, it'll be a long while before anyone's able to show something as moderately risque as Knights of Ramune on American TV, but every step counts.

  • Undoubtedly, Tenchi is good anime, but everyone knows that the best anime ever has got to be Neon Genesis Evangelion because it has all the elements of a great entertainment experience: comedy, action, violence, sex, drama, technology, mystery, and a great ending. Why did Cartoon Network pick Tenchi? Maybe because Tenchi is more aimed at a younger audience than NGE, which is for a mature audience. Therefore, for all you older people out there, I reccomend you watch Evangelion in addition to Tenchi. The censorship of Tenchi is not wrong at all, nudity is not something that should be regularly shown to a kid who usually watches Tom and Jerry. "Mommy, mommy, what is that?" All you tenchi fans, watch eva instead! "Procrastination and masturbation are the same. It feels good until you realize you are screwing yourself." -Anon
  • OK, someone noted G-Force, and I fairly intentionally left OUT Gundam Wing from that list because the editing is actually limited, and they had an uncut airing. Tenchi's editing was less limited, but I heard it gets an uncut airing too, I haven't confirmed it. I like what little I have seen of Gundam Wing.

Flint the Time Detective is on FOX, somewhat humorous, I don't know if it was edited for content.
Card Captor Sakura is HEAVILY edited (skip the first SEVEN episodes?)

DBZ was edited for content, supposedly digital clothing was added.
Sailor Moon are very edited and story elements were changed as well as genders of certain gay and lesbian characters to make a "more acceptable" hetro relationship out of it, and in at least one case I hear, lovers were made out to be friendly cousins.

Pokemon reportedly has very few edits, although a couple episodes were pulled, one due to reported seizures in Japan, and another where a gun was pulled on a character (I heard Ash), the pull was decided at the time of the Columbine, CO incident, a decision due to the political climate at the time.

If anyone wants MY recommendations, in case you decide you want to be open to trying something different, depending on the genres you like:

    Mindbending: Serial Experiments Lain
Action/ light scifi W/ great music: Macross Plus and Cowboy Bebop (a very talented woman composed for both)
    Action/Mindbending: Neon Genesis Evangelion
    Intrigue: Patlabor 2
    Humor/Western: Trigun
Humor:Castle of Cagliostro (or anything Lupin based)
Romance: New Kimagure Orange Road (movie)
    Historical: Grave of the Fireflies
For Kids: My Neighbor Totoro (Totoros kick Pikachu's @$$)

There is a lot of good stuff out there, this is a quick list (so please don't get offended if your favorite isn't here or you think I slightly mislisted the genre). Pick a few titles based on what type of shows you like and give it a shot.
  • Cartoon network is a cable channel, they could get away with way more than what they do. With that in mind, I don't think they necessarily want everything editted like nuts, thats just the way it is. If you want less editting on the cartoon, complain to the company doing the dubs, not CN.
  • Actually, I suspect its because the rights to NGE arent' available. The Sci-Fi channel already has them and will be showing the eps starting (I'm told) in september.
  • I'll just dup' my reply to the article here:

Regarding Reboot on the Toonami lineup, I recently was happy to notice that A.D. Vision [advfilms.com] will be publishing the Reboot and Shadow Raiders series on CD (see here [advfilms.com] at 07-05-2000 Resistance is Futile). They must have licenced them from Mainframe. A.D. Vision is a big publisher of Anime videos.

I may even have been partly responsible. At the 1999 V-Con, I talked to Adria Budd, who worked on a number of the Reboot Season 2 & 3 scripts and was executive assistant to either Ian Pearson or Gavin Blair (I forget which). She was also the modeler's inspiration for the adult Andraia. Anyways, I asked if there were any plans for releasing Reboot on DVD and she said there weren't. I suggested Mainframe might want to check out Anime producers like AnimEigo or A.D. Vision because:

    • There's a fair amount of overlap between Reboot and Anime fandom
    • North American anime publishers are used to licensing and redistributing properties that have been developed by third parties for television distribution.
Thus for a minimal risk, they could licence the property, make some cash on a property that isn't as fresh as it was a few years ago, keep viewer mindshare, and promote Mainframe Productions by keeping the product in the market. If the added revenue and publicity was significant, it may even have helped produce financing for the made-for-tv movies that are in the offing. Perhaps A.D. Vision has options on the istribution rights for them as well? Well maybe that's a stretch. Anyways, you can't beat more Reboot!
  • Duh, I meant Reboot on DVD of course. Ironically, I was kicking myself for getting up too late to have been able to bid on the full set of Reboot season 3 tapes they had for the VCon 2? charity auction - the tapes had been duplicated from the masters (perhaps network distribution quality?). I'll manage to console myself with a Reboot DVD collection since I care more about the quality of the reproduction than about how collectible it would have been. Besides, for the latter, I have a small Reboot Season 3 (adult Matrix & Andraia) poster signed by Adria Budd :-)
  • Sweet... I would love to get a complete set of Reboot episodes (and the upcoming movie too) on DVD. The only thing cooler would be the Utterly Definitive Edition of The Wizard of Speed and Time.
  • Which is, IMHO, Fox's answer to WB's Cardcaptors (Card Captor Sakura), similar to what they did last year when they brought DigiMon and Monster Rancher to compete with WB's PokeMon. Now it remains to be seen (and heard) wether they'll do a good english rendition of Escaflowne's original Opening Song, Yakusoku wa Iranai, or if they'll destroy it, along with all the sound effects like Nelvana did with Cardcaptors.

Huh, the "nudity" in Tenchi Muyo censored?

You've got to be kidding, that would be the most pointless and brainless snip in the history of censorship.

Ryoko is an alien demon (actually, she was manufactured by Washu, the "Greatest Scientist in the Universe", so I suppose that makes her some kind of construct), and she doesn't understand the first thing about human inhibitions about anything, so when she strips off in the pool it's about as innocent as it comes. Cinematographically it's for its effect on Ayeka and Tenchi, and the result is absolutely hilarious.

There is absolutely nothing to censor here. There is no sex (needless to say), nothing remotely provocative, and certainly no sleeze of any kind. There's just some bare (cartoon-style) featureless skin, and that in the context of a demon that is not only non-human but not even really physical in the normal sense (ie. flies right through matter).

Are the censors in the US completely off their collective rockers?
  • Good post. A lot of comments from the books that Kajishima and Kuroda wrote about Tenchi.

MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR TENCHI OVA AND TENCHI NOVELS.

    1) Jurai is not the largest empire. The GP Police are. It is probibly a safe bet that it is the most powerfull, given that fourth generation ships are still the equiv of a GP squadron. (To say nothing of the 1-3 generations). This is why the Jurains were very worried about Ryo-oh-ki who took out a large number of 3rd and 4th generation ships, shot one down (Ryu-oh, Aeka's ship) and engaged in a very long battle with the most powerfull first generation ship (Funaho - Yousho/Tenchi's ship).

As for Mihoshi, I am definitly in the Mihoshi is Tokimi's shadow camp. Even if you are the luckiest person in the universe, you just don't wander thru sub-dimensional space into Washu's lab.

The TTM books hint that there is a lot going on w/ Tsunami. She is one of the Megami (Washu and Tokimi being the other two), but she also tells Ryouko that she is keeping a promise to a friend when she assimilates w/ Sasami. My guess is that the friend might be Masaki, the sister of the founder of jurain, but that is a whole new world of speculation.

Aeka, amusingly enough, crown princess of Jurai appears to be the weekest character out there.

Ryouko can match Tsunami's power... That is a rather scary thought.

According to TTM, Yousho left Jurai because they would never support a marriage to Airi, a student he met at the Galaxy acadamy (yes, the same acadamy that Washu tought at). The marriage w/ Aeka was arranged, but Yousho was never interested in it. (BTW, he has a daughter by Airi named Mizuho. At this point in the OVA's he does not know anything about it).

As for Tsunami, she probibly controlled Ryouko to lead him to Jurai. Ryouko her voices in her gems when she attacked Jurai. Ironicly enough, Tsunami also set up Azusa (Yousho's father) and Funaho (Yousho's mother, not to be confused with his ship which he named after her). Funaho was a Human. Azusa had a duel with Kagato and lost. Before Kagato could finish the job, Tsunami interviened and dropped Yousho off on earth.

In case you did not get it yet, Tsunami, Washu and Tokimi are sisters.

Alot of people are in the Tsunami bit-twidiling Tenchi theory. Ie, Tsunami was trying to create Tenchi. This would explain why neither Tsunami or Yousho were particullarly suprised when he generated LHW's. Washu also plays in here somewhere since she has 20k years to muck around.

I am also very exicted about another OVA series, but it has not yet been confirmed who would write it.

I think if America could get it straight that a naked body didn't constitute pornography, that would be a big step in the right direction. Face it, there's a difference from something like a topless woman and a hardcore sex movie. Yet, in America, they are both treated the same. I think we need to remove the poles from our collective asses and realize that kids aren't going to die because they see a boob. Keeping young children away from hardcore/deviant sexual images, fine, but a naked body shouldn't be such a big deal to anyone. Note that the US Govt. never *forced* CN to censor anything, CN is doing it on its own to be more 'family friendly' and not to scare people off, and its their right as a company. The idea of an anime pay-channel for fans seems like a good compormise, nobody complains about a little nudity on HBO/Cinemax now do they?

I think you also apply some mistaken interpretations of Japanese
behavior in your examples. Just because people act a certain way
in Anime storylines does not mean that is accepted or common
    behavior for that society.

    Just from your examples:

"more open about nudity and sexuality"

Then why does so much anime hold to the running gag of someones
extreme embarrassment at exposed nudity (or seeing someone so exposed)?
As for sexuality, in many ways the Japanese are even more puritanical
than the Americans. The reason it is played to comedic effect so often
in Anime is because the characters act in ways that are so far outside
    the expected norm of behavior.

"This is evidenced through the the public baths"

AFAIK, no it isn't. Again, while nudity with the same sex is considered
acceptable, peeking into the other side of the bath is very bad form indeed.
So much so that it again, is a common anime cliche' that the guys cannot
help but try to peek over to the other side.
A better comparison would be to ask how many nude beaches do the Japanese have?

"many more lesbians & gays in anime than in american shows"

I think what is more the case is western fans are implying those
relationships when they are not actually there in the storyline.
This also comes from differences in Japanese cultural relationships
    vs. Western culture.

"Anime isn't just meant for children in Japan"

True, it is applied much more broadly as an artistic choice in storytelling.
But in general, Anime geeks in Japan are viewed much the same way as
X-men geeks, Star Wars/Trek geeks, and Techno-geeks are viewed over here.

Then, today, /. reposts the the same story ttwwiiccee on the front page.

    That's the problem with those "clickity-click" interfaces...it's easy to mis-click and double-clickclick.

  • 'Scuse me? It's been on Cartoon Network since the 10th -- I already have a week's worth of VHS... :)

'course that's only so I can sliptime 'em - I'm usually at work in the midafternoon.

BTW: Didja see the Dexter's Laboratory takeoff on Speed Racer? I almost died! I did! I did! I really really did. Now who could "Racer D" actually be?

    /(o\ I'm not a medievalist - I just play one on weekends!

  • Anime is incredibly expensive to air (much more than normal content)

Why? hmm.. greed? :) and the fact that most anime is bought by Disney (yes, another dark secret they don't tell you) and then licensed to the anime companies.

That last bit about Disney is utter bullshit. Disney does own the rights to most of Studio Ghibli's titles (Nausicaa, Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service), but nothing else. The anime companies get their licenses direct from the producers in Japan. Hell, some of the companies now distributing anime are nothing more than US arms of the Japanese companies (Pioneer, Bandai), while others have gone so far as to co-produce anime with the Japanese (ADV Films, Manga Entertainment).

I have to wonder where you people come up with this stuff sometimes. ^_^

Expect to see much more anime on thier channel. CN != SF
The cartoon network has already contracted to finish the Dragon Ball Z
series as the dubs become available. They still have the OAVs of
Gundam Wing to yet show (and yes, they did aquire the rights for those).
Gundam Wing, during its initial showing, was the highest rated show, in
the highest rated timeslot (Toonami) for the entire network.

The Sci-fi channel screwed themselves over on that one. Bad timeslots, some
bad shows/movies, and recycling too much without trying to hype/introduce
new material. Also they lost focus by trying to cram it all into special
events ("Anime-week"), instead of treating it at least as a separate genre.
As much as I like SCIFI, they don't always make very good programming decisions.

Kids WB has fared well with Pokemon, and now Card Captors (Card Captor Sakura)
Fox has followed suit with Digimon and Monster Rancher, and is trying to
bring Escaflowne to the Fox Family Channel (which may be a mistake for other
reasons). A lot of other corporate entities seem to this

BTW: Sci-fi still have the rights to the "Slayers" series, so don't count
them out yet either- they may have just gotten in before the industry was
    really heating up on anime.

Other than Miyazaki's works, you can't name any anime that has been liscensed
for Buena Vista (not Disney corporate!) to bring over. Or are you now
claiming that Disney is behind the "anime is animate porn" sterotype?
  • Yeah, really hard core. ;-)

Heck,, most TV adverts are more sexually arousing than Tenchi, by a mile. You know, I get the feeling that this can't have anything to do with sex and nudity, as not even US bible-bashing censors could be that brainless. It probably stems from US studio propaganda that Japanese animation is dodgy, and as a result all anime is getting "gently cleansed" with a wire brush and power sander.

Oh well, just ignore the TV and buy the DVDs. Or move to Europe where public nudity is merely "naughty but nice", rather like cream cakes, except that cream cakes are much worse for you.
  • Yes, I have the Katz filter on. That didn't stop me from getting this trojan Katz article [slashdot.org] posted by timothy last week, nor did it stop two previous articles.

...they'll definitely have to edit it for TV since there is the occasional nude scene. ... I'm stoked about this one.

I think you mean stroked, don't you?

(For those that don't get it... that's a joke).

it would be kinda liek teh skinimax, but all anime, and tehy wouldn't hace to edit out all of teh juicy nudity. i can understand why teh cartoon network is censor^H^H^H^H^H editing out teh nudity, because liek litel children watch teh network and may be scarred for lief after seeing teh human nipple (but there is no problem with them seeing teh violence and explosions and stuff) ok bye.

    loev,

  • I like Tenchi 'n all, but everyone's only bringing in the less mature anime that's targeted at a younger audience. With Fox and WB, it was Technoman, Pokemon, Digimon, *mon, and now Card Capture Sakura, and with Cartoon Network, it's ancient stuff like Speed Racer and Voltron, and some popular stuff like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z, and now Tenchi. What I want is a Toonami that's closer to what's played in the Sci-Fi channel than Fox...with stuff like Akira etc.

My predictions for next anime series to come: Slayers. Now my question is, when will Neon Gensis Evangelion come to TV? And when it does, they better create a ton of publicity prior...
  • I propose that CN should show nothing but the powerpuff girls. I can never figure out when it is on, so I end up turning on the tv at weird hours hoping to catch it. It would make my life much easier if they would only show Bubbles Buttercup and Blossom over and over and over.

Maybe dexter for variety. Or what about the tunderbirds? Yeah! "G;day Ms. Penelope."

    Gotta love it.
