Star Wars Toys: Concept Drawings and Prototypes 27

Ant sent us a seriously cool site that has tons of unproduced and concept star wars toys that never made it to market. These range from all over the place (coin books?) to prototype dolls with ken or barbie parts and clothing. I was just thinking a few days ago about my old star wars collection: a millenium falcon, an x-wing, a boba fett, a darth vader. Strangely all of them were broken garage sale items. But if I built a lego fortress for them to battle it was all good.

  • Hands up everyone who went looking for this [toysrgus.com]. You know who you are.

  • I'd ask him if he remembered when he sold out to such a degree.

IIRC it was right after the first movie - there were all sorts of toys almost immediately. Any bitching now about Lucas' selling out is about 20 years too late :)

  • At one point ToysRUs was attempting to remove them from the face of the 'net. Did they settle, or win their suit?

  • Speaking of Star Wars toys, this should be good for a chuckle [yahoo.com].
  • > Hey, with our current president, we may see a sequel.

You refer, of course, to the Faith Based Missle Defense?

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away,
a small band of rebels produce a small,
    but interesting website.
They mistakenly tell their friends that they would enjoy the pictures of
{star wars crap | exploding computers | home made missiles | robotic square dancers},
never expecting wind of the site to attract the interest of The Evil Empire.
Anyway, who cares about that moon out there -

Wait! That's no moon, and now you will feel the power of this fully operational ball of perl and MySQL.

Hobbyists beware: hide on your ice planets, we will find and destroy you.
  • His site has been around for at least as long as I've been on the web (6 years or so). Too bad he's being slashdotted all of a sudden. Good guy with a heckuva nice collection who has been so generous to put it all on the web. Funny how these things suddenly draw so much attention after so many years...

  • So which suit approved the Jar Jar Binks deep throating tongue lollypop?

Just tell me there aren't pedophile concerns about a lollypop with a three foot long extendable bubblegum tongue that shoots down you child's throat. The gas station near my friend's house still had boxes of these suggestive little numbers they weren't able to shift.

Now if we'd seen that for the first Alien film OTOH.

Geez, with just Vader and Fett, what kinda fun could you have? I guess you could just repeat this scene over and over:

Vader: I want him alive. NO DISINTEGRATIONS! (pokes finger at Boba Fett)

    Fett: ---

Or you could redo American Graffiti, replacing the hot rods with the X-Wing and Falcon and Darth and Fett for "Toad" and Steve.

I'd ask him if he remembered when he sold out to such a degree. Everyone expects some product tie-ins, no matter what movie comes out. That's just a result of our impulse-buying society. But Star Wars has gone too far, and if the "going far" scale was circular, it has done a couple laps around "too far." I mean, I could find star wars toilet paper if I tried hard enough. I wouldn't care about all this (since I'm not Joe Drive-300-miles-to-get-X-toy) but since the last movie was such a piece of shit, it leads me (and others) to believe that $$$ comes before telling a good story now, in Lucas' world.

Unfortunately, the Star Wars brand has such momentum now in the global psyche that you can almost gaurantee that the next two movies will be even more whored out to any company that thinks the logo will sell more cereal, mouse-pads, books, dildo's, whatever... I'll watch the movies, but that's it.

  • I,m currently backpacking through Turkey.

I just pýcked up some Tutti-Fruýty flavored Star Wars gum in a village of about 2000 people.

  • Ummm...how old are you, Paul? Isn't there an age requirement to get in this place? Sheesh...
  • Well, the site's being slashdotted to hell... I caught this yesterday (on memepool, which was already slowing the site down) and mirrored one of the more interesting things, a trading card peek at the 'yoda religion' that Lucas put the smack down on (and rightfully so)-- you can see the card here [kisrael.com], along with direct links to some of the coolest things on the site. (like Atha Prime [toysrgus.com] (slashdotted), possibly the first idea for a post-ROTJ storyline badguy, and this unreleased minirig [toysrgus.com] (also slashdotted) clipon for the Falcon. And some other non-slashdotted, extended Star-Wars-iverse links [kisrael.com] as well. )

  • They have the whole Chewbacca family here... [toysrgus.com]

Naff StarWars trivia of the day:

Itchy (which is short for Attichitcuk) is Chewbacca's father; Malla (Mallatobuck) is Chewbacca's wife; and Lumpy (Lumpawarrump) is Chewbacca's son.

Wonder if they ever made a 'Wookie Pornstar' figure???

  • The above line is a quote from the BBC. Not mine. Unfortunately /. doesn't have a fix after preview and post button.

  • You forget that suing leads to jokes as we all get a good laugh at lawyers. "It's a symbient circle, you can't have one without the other. You must understand this."

  • As a child, just as Empire Strikes Back was released, I remember sitting down with a ton of graph paper and a ruler, and figuring out sizes for vehicles in Empire Strikes Back with respect to figures I had from the first movie. I even went as far as sending them into Kenner. Anxiously I awaited a response from them only to get a form letter stating that they had plenty of artists and designers creating things for us that would be slowly released to the market.

Being a kid, I couldn't understand why some toys were not released for quite some time after the movie and not all at once. I also couldn't understand licensing and why they hadn't used my designs! Or even understanding that they wanted to protect themselves from lawsuits [trektoday.com]. Somewhere in all my belongings I have a letter from Kenner that I just have to scan. I wonder how many other industries have to tolerate dopey kids randomly sending in ideas to compete with in-house employees.

  • ...when we have brand new Transformers [tfw2005.com] to waste our hard-earned money on?

Obi-Wan: Do you see lights on that switch? It's the sight of a thousand terrible slashdotters heading that site's way...

I was expecting a Ronald Reagan action figure. Hey, with our current president, we may see a sequel.
  • Sure, lots of Star Wars toys have made it to market over the years, but one is sorely, sorely absent:

The Genuine Slavegirl Princess Leia RealDoll(tm) [realdoll.com]

That's right. Check your self-respect at the door gentlemen, because this is the coup de gras for every geek on earth. Now we can revel in the luscious, voluptuous disgusted self-loathing only a genuine RealDoll(tm) can give.

Drawing on the same material, a Genuine Jabba RealDoll might not be quite as marketable a commodity, but would, nevertheless, make for an interesting piece of furniture for those hard-to-fill living rooms.

  • Its only a matter of time. And with the current advances in technology, we are bound to have bigger, better "special effects", at the expense of diploma^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hstory. Odd that the characters seem a bit... recycled too.

  • Is this site mirrored anywhere? I can get the horrible, teasing text of the lists to come up just fine, but haven't found a single working picture in all my spelunking...

  • For a realistic comeback to that, check out what the kid from the Richard Pryor flick "The Toy" has been up to in recent years. In all honestly, give l'il Vader a break... we have the comfort of knowing that his punk ass will be dropped into lava and reduced to half a torso kept alive by a resperator and a robotic suit. Its only a matter of time.

  • Apart from me, did anyone see or had a jagwa sand rover? It was a behemoth of a toy and it was actually remote controlled! I mean it sucked as a RC toy but it was so cool to run over my stuckup neighbor's storm troopers... He has never forgiven me. :)
  • Like the decapitated Jar-Jar?

Stellar rays prove fibbing never pays. Embezzlement is another matter.

Working...
