palfreman writes "The Linux Beer Hike is less than a month away. This year it is in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, following last years success in County Clare, Ireland, and the 2001 event in Bouillon, Belgium. This year the dates are Saturday, August 9 to Sunday, August 17. There is also registration site and a members mailinglist. I'm driving from England, a 2400 mile round trip!"

    Phew... when I first read that headline I thought someone had raised the price of beer in Slovania. Not that I'm ever going to go to Slovania, but with globalization and stuff I worry about these things.

    • There have been attempts to restore some information from the attendees to previous events, unfortunately all attempts have failed. In the end the doctors said it is best to simply give up any restore procedures and hire some agency to make sure people drink less next time.

      Its an informal gathering of geeks who hang out in some venue like a church hall for a week and hack and give talks. We also go on walks around interesting areas in the locality; mountains hills whatever. We also go siteseeing a lot caves and castles being a perennial favourite. In truth less walking goes on than I think should happen but hell its a holiday people do what they want.

      Then in the evening we invade the local pubs and get blasted (well I do). When the beer hike hits town its a shock and awe thing; we invariably pick a small village with pubs or restaurants that are normally used by 4/5 locals; and all of a sudden they are swamped by 40/50 geeks, its anarchy.

      At the moment we only do European country in which some sucke^Hvolunteer has arranged a hall with Net connectivity and power and scouted out accommodation etc. There talk of a US version since so many Americans come but thats not happened so far.

      Its totally informal and fun - those of who go are always keen for the next one.

    Try moving to Sweden and you will get used to driving long distances. Guess we have to with only 21,6 people per sq km. (England have 247,4)

    To bad i couldn't find a joke to insert but ... There's currently a true tick-plague going on in almost the whole of eastern europe. People you'd better get that vacination now since it takes about three weeks to kick in. Pluspoint is the ticks concerned are not spreading the dreaded Lyme's Disease but merely Tickborne Encephalitis.       Do not spread panic, please. I am Slovak myself and while it is true, that you could catch infected ticks, it is extremely rare and no reason for panicking.

      Most people there are not vaccinated. If you go to some woods, just apply standard precautions - long trousers, long sleeves, some bug repelent and after finishing your trip, check for any ticks on your body.

      Even if you find some, in 90% it is not infected. After removal, just check next day, whether the place is swollen or red. If it is, then visit a

      Yes, everyone, I realize there are ways across the ocean. Chunnel, ferry, etc.

    What this proves is:
    1. People using Linux make more money, and save more money as well.
    2. I've never heard of a Windows Beer Hike - guess after spending money for Windoze, there's nothing left.
    3. Linux users are sensible - they really meet real people, and do real things - not NetMeetings, Virtual tours ...

    I'm planning to start something similar where I live. More later..

  • I hope there lots of rest stops, Pilsener is fast acting compared to Irish Stout. Rather like using a dd to wipe a drive as compared to a linux mkfs.
    dd can be more satisfying and assure that all the crap is gone like one good pint of Irish Stout, but a Linux format is real quick and dirty, just like 6 or 7 Pilseners.

    2400 miles would barely get me from Vancouver back to my parent's place in Toronto, let alone a round trip.
  • Sounds like what I do on a Monday when nobody else is around to drink with me. And I only have to drive 1.5 miles round trip to my favorite liquor store.

    I always get a smile on my face when Europeans talk about driving far on a vacation. Or when they come here to the states and think everything is so close together. The look on their faces can be pretty funny when you tell them its a fifteen hour drive to Florida or a drive out west will take them a couple days. 2400 miles was a little more than half the distance we drove on a trip to Montana last year. It was nice though when I stayed in England a few years back that you could get to just about anywhere in 4 hours or so from London. That and being able to take a train there was even cooler. I'd trade that for all the cheese curd signs we saw in Wisconsin. :-)

      Easy with your fuel prices :>. Were planning a trip to arctic sea from s. Finland, it's just a days drive, but it's no means cheap in our budget. Biggest hurdle is still:"who drives? I want to drink", i imagine same for that english fellow.

      Likewise for Australia. I don't live there, but I heard these stories when I was visiting.

      Tourists (including Americans) came down for the Olympics. Some where known to ask if they could see Uluru (Ayers Rock) during an afternoon when they had a couple hours free. Olypmics were in Sydney. Uluru is a four hour drive from Alice Springs, in the middle of the country. Ha!

      Guess most people are ignorant of geography in regions not their own.
      • I had such a visitor staying at my house. The problem is those fiendish package deals -- see Sydney Harbour, then Uluru, then the Barrier Reef! All in one week!

  • When I drove to California and back from my home in TN, it was almost a 4000 mile round-trip. Now, this guy is driving from England, to Slovakia and is going to pass through how many countries to get there? How many languages? How many cultures?

    Nothing insightful, but I find that just amazing that crossing half of the US is really and truly an amazing trek. I couldn't imagine driving Key West, FL -> Seattle, WA (or, hey, Alaska for that matter). (btw, mapquest: 3530 miles). We live in a fucking h
  • Spent two weeks this past June in Slovakia visiting relatives.
    Some tips:
    1) Pivo- beer, lager, pilsner is quite good and cheap (sorry not free). Prices varied from 10sk to 30sk a half liter (20 cents to 75 cents approx). I think Banska Bystrica may be the home of Zlaty Bazant (Golden Pheasant)- a very popular and very good beer. And for those whose don't drink beer, go for the Kofola, a cola that is pretty darn good, IMHO.

    2) I did not hike the trails in the low Tatras, but the trails in the high Tatras wer
    • And Kofola has a good caffeine content :) There is also a habit of mixing it with cold black coffee to make an 'iced coffee' drink... Ideal Hacker nutrition

      Depending where you go, the big MuckD does have places in Sk. Dunno about BB though but would be surprised if there isn't one skulking around somewhere. Try the local burgers, though. Very different but are actually feeding.

      Agree about Nescafe etc. We're buying a new house this summer and on my list of things to drive out with are "coffee(lots of)" !!
  • Man, I'm driving to Burningman next month from Austin, Texas and it's 2200 miles one-way. You silly Europeans and your tiny countries. :)

    32 hours one way in a truck with 2 women. Yes, it will be an interesting trip.
  • Any OS Developers/Followers that support the homeopathic use of good Beer/Ale are OK in my book. I don't see Redmond throwing very many Beer Bashes. I mean, which event would you rather attend? An event where the Beer flows like wine (huh?) and the atmosphere is in a fun loving pub or Brau Haus or an event at a far away Hotel/Convention Center with an overweight, scary and sweaty Steve Balmer marching around screaming incomprehensible buzz words about .NET. Seems like an easy choice.
