    I still say that Lucas missed out by having Episode III pick up after the Clone Wars. It's something that Star Wars fans have wanted to see for decades now, and I have a feeling that a series of animated shorts--no matter how well-produced they may be--just won't do the Clone Wars justice.

    • He doesn't have much choice, Star Wars was always supposed to be the story of Anakin Skywalker. If he focused on the Clone Wars instead of Anakin's fall from grace, that would be contradictory to the intent.

      Which is not to say that I think this will be good, or will do the Clone Wars justice, or will in any way shape or form be fitting. But try to see things from George's point of view.

          Can you imagine a Matrix 1.5? The film starts with Neo and Trinity picking up the pieces and hightailing it out of there after setting off the emp. They face a rugged and dangerous journey across the machine badlands before making their way to zion where morpheous tries to convince everyone that Neo is the one.

            I think "interquels" could be pretty neat in the right circumstances. Or "co-quels" like Ender's Shadow.

        Was Star Wars always supposed to be the story of Anakin Skywalker, or is that just another example of LucasHistory(TM)--you know, the version of history where the Star Wars films were always intended for kids, Greedo shot first, and Lucas planned a nine-part saga from day one? ;)

      • Ack! We aren't going to see the Clone Wars on the big screen?! I have to say, Lucas did have a choice: He could have chosen NOT to make these awful movies. Back when they were left to our imagination they were so much better. I always thought that was the purpose of NOT making them! It gave the originals a depth that is now erased.

        Sigh... Maybe Speilberg can convince him to let him make a Clone Wars movie...

        Lucas just likes to revise his intentions and pretend he always wanted it to be about the rise, fall, and redemption of Anakin Skywalker.
    • Well, there does appear to be a sequence of at least six novels as well, starting with "Shatterpoint" [amazon.com], and there will no doubt be a lot of comics too. I have to agree that it's no substitute for a movie set in the midst of the wars though.

    Nice. Only problem is that the Clones are on the side of the Jedi and the Republic, not the Separatists. The Separatists use droid armies. Someone really was doing their job over at E, weren't they?

    • The clones wern't supposed to be on the side of the jedi.. they were made in the name of the jedi, and the jedi found out and used them to fight the droids because they had to... but they were made for the old jedi master guy that the jedi think is dead, who i bet turns out to be the emporer.
      • Senator Palpatine is the Emporer, not the old Jedi Master they think is dead. I doubt that Jedi and the Senator are the same people.

          • Senator Palpatine IS Darth Sidious. Don't you get it? I saw that immediately in Episode 1. Compare a Darth Sidious figurine with an Emperor Palpatine figurine with a Senator Palpatine figurine. All the same face. All the same person. The Phantom Menace, Senator Palpatine is, as Yoda would put it.

            It will be Senator/Emperor Palpatine who finishes Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader's training. Since there can only be two Sith, a Master and an Apprentice, Darth Maul had to die. However, at the end of Episode 6: Ret

        This cartoon is about the CLONE WARS. The CLONE WARS are the epic battles between the Republic and the Separatists, not what happens after the Republic "wins" and becomes the EMPIRE of the original trilogy. The Clone Troopers won't turn on the Jedi until AFTER the CLONE WARS ends. So, for the duration of the cartoon series and the first 10 minutes of EPISODE THREE, the CLONES will be on the side of the JEDI.

        What you are confused about are the events after the CLONE WARS. That is when Supreme Chancellor Palpatine declares himself Emperor and Anakin Skywalker becomes Darth Vader. That is when the Jedi are hunted down and driven toward extinction thanks to Vader, the renamed STORM TROOPERS, and bounty hunters like Boba Fett.

        Palpatine IS DARTH SIDEOUS.

          • Uh, Have you ever seen these SOMEWHAT related movies called "Star Wars", "The Empire Strikes Back", or "Return of the Jedi"? They make this shit blindingly obvious. Like how can you miss that Palpatine is played by the same actor as the Emporor, and (except for the ageing makup) they look identical? Same thing goes for the clones. Didn't you notice they looked a WEE bit like stormtroopers? Jeez, are you like the least observant person in the UNIVERSE?

            1. The Emperor's name from the classic trilogy has been commonly known to be PALPATINE since his action figure was released back in 1983/84 with RETURN OF THE JEDI.

            2. Emperor Palpatine in 1983's RETURN OF THE JEDI wears the same style robe as DARTH SIDIOUS of 1999's THE PHANTOM MENACE and 2002's ATTACK OF THE CLONES. Darth Vader is clearly the Emperor's apprentice in EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI. So common sense would lead you to c

              i totally didnt realize that palpatine was the emporer... what about the sith master that was instructing darth mal/doku... is that palpatine switching back and forth?? it was obvious that palpatine was gonna be corrupt, but i didnt quite grasp that he would become(or already is) the sith master. also, i thought that there was differant actors that played the emporer between empire and jedi... im getting antsy for the third movie now... either way i hope these shorts are better than the droids cartoon..

                You are referring to DARTH SIDIOUS, the robed Sith Master from Episode I and II. Darth Sidious is Palpatine, who later becomes the Emperor. The hot rumor online is that in Episode III, he'll reveal himself to certain Jedi at the end of the flick and his face will change into the decrepid face seen in Jedi with a wave of his hand (if you'

                True, but the novelization is not cannon. The novelization was ghost-written by Alan Dean Foster based upon earlier scripts for the movie. If you'll notice in the novelization

        • Plapatine IS NOT Darth Sideous. Palpatine is a CLONE of Darth Sideous (but doesn't know it yet). The Sith Lords arent stupid enough to believe they can hide underneath the nose of the greatst Jedi Masters of the day, they aren't that powerful. But with a bit of cleverness they can over come the Jedi.

            I was a big supporter of this idea on theforce.net but it is not meant to be. Palpatine is extremely powerful in his trickery. He's supposedly going to wave his hand in front of his face and show the Jedi his illusion near the end of EPISODE III showing his true face; that of the decrepid Emperor last seen in RETURN OF THE JEDI.

      • I can't blame anyone for wincing during the love scenes (I sure did---the weakest part of the movie), but the action parts were great, and I'm the sort of person who will like a movie with a mediocre plot as long as it has great special effects. Attack of the Clones fit the bill.
    • But the Separatists (led by Tyranus, et al) are the ones who had the clones created. They are orchestrating the war, and only a tiny few of them know it.

      Sure, it's still raking in money, but at least it's the television networks, and not us, paying for it.
    • Not really; the Animatrix had a very specific anime style, and had cartoons closer to 10 minutes long. These are going to be very short 3 minute cartoons.

      Sheesh. Mixing media isn't anything NEW. Do you remember the fantastic Batman Animated Series which followed the successful Batman movie? Or perhaps the watchable Real Ghostbusters cartoon which followed the movies of the same name?

      Animatrix wasn't anything NEW (and for my money, wasn't anything interesting, aside from the quality backstory of "The Second Renaissance"). The only thing it had going for it was that

    Wow this is just what I've been waiting! An animated Clone Wars! Lucas you genius you've done it again! I'm sure through watching 2-3 minute cartoons all the battles will be completed and the plot will be golden. I can't wait to watch the battles to see an animated Anakin Skywalker, because animated is so much better than CG and real live actors! Damn Lucas is a genius!

  • I must admit, I wasn't too impressed with the new Star Wars movies, but a cartoon spinoff could be interesting. I recently saw Tartakovsky interviewed on a VH1 Special [dapcentral.org] about "prime time" cartoons, so I checked out a few episodes of Samurai Jack.

    Tartakovsky definately has a passion for action (yep, that's what the VH1 show said [repeatedly]). My best example is this: just listen to an episode of Samurai Jack and hear how much of it is dialogue, and how much is noises (slash, grunt) and music? (I think the

    I've just gotta chime in that 2 to 3 minute toons are definately not enough, when I first heard of this I thought it was going to be a real cartoon not just filler. Too bad they didn't take the opportunity to use the savings from making cartoons instead of live action in order to actually flesh out the Star Wars universe. For the price of Ep1&2 they could probably turn every book ever written about SW into a damn cartoon. (Except "Splinter of the Mind's Eye" by Alan Dean Foster of course) Just wonderful, it'll probably be shoved in-between other cartoons during Toonami, meaning I won't see it until someone puts it up on one of the bittorrent or emule sites. Cartoon Yoda looks great tho!

      I was at ComiCon (sp) in San Diego this year, and they had a panel discussion with Genndy and his team about "Clone Wars". The quote I remember is, "You can do a lot in three minutes." In order to figure out pacing, they spliced together Samurai Jack footage to see how much of an episode they could stuff into three minutes. Turns out, they could fit quite a lot. One of Genndy's strengths is being able to

    I for one can't wait for these shorts, though I am with the people who wish that they would be longer.

    I think Genndy Tartakovsky was a great choice to make these shorts because he has a great handle on stylish animated action. Watching "Samurai Jack" also reminds me of a lot of anime notably "Rurouni Kenshin" with the split screen action and cinematic framings.

    In an interview Tartakovsky said that he made "Samurai Jack" largely because there weren't enough animated shows with enough action to satisfy his

    Mind you, I'd much rather have a live action Knights of the Old Republic series.
