Doom Movie Pushed Back to October 55

I know you're all waiting with breathless anticipation for the Doom film, but GamesIndustry.biz has word that you'll have to wait until October for the U.S. release. From the article: "The film was formerly expected to appear in late June in North America, but Universal's website confirms a report on horror movie website Bloody-Disgusting.com that it has swapped places with George Romero's next zombie movie, Land of the Dead."

Anyone else find it funny that Romero is yet again associated with Doom? It's obviously a different person, but what a coincidence in names.

Maybe this is old news and I lost it in among all the whining about how the movie won't involve a link between Mars and Hell and therefore the plot just won't make any sense, but -- The Rock is going to be the star? That's the first promising-sounding thing about this movie. I can't imagine a better fit.

Who are these other people going to be, though, monsters? I don't remember any other people in Doom, except for heads on stakes (and John Romero, at the end). Maybe they could get Michael Moore a cameo as a mancubus.

    • Is The Rock's dialogue all going to be just his grunting whenever he gets hit?
    • Well, why can't it have The Rock AND be set where the Doom games were played?

I have a feeling this will be Doom in name only...like that Final Fantasy movie which had nothing to do with Final Fantasy.

Why not have a move called Half-Life and have it set in New York and center on the fast-paced world of international finance!

Nobody said the plot wouldn't make sense. The reason people are whining is that the plot appears to have absolutely fuck all to do with Doom.
      • Not that following the video game makes much difference. One of the best "video game" movies was "Super Mario Brothers" and it had fuck all to do with Doom too.

And before the inevitable, "Super Mario Brothers SUCKED yew lam3r!" Let me just say, its not the video game, and its not really all that much of a kids movie, but it is definitely cooly psychedelic and a cult classic.
        • People forget the number of bad video game movies out there.

Mortal Kombat II - My brain was permanently damaged after the movie.

Super Mario Bros - Did the director even own a Nintendo.

Tomb Raiders (all of them) - If it was not for breast, there would be no sequels.

Street Fighter - Guile/Van Dammit as the lead. It should revolve around Ryu, but obviously no Japanese lead in an American Movie.

Double Dragon - I didn't know the game was a romantic comedy.

DOOM - It'll be identical to Aliens, Aliens II, Al
    • The Rock said in an interview that he plays the group's sargeant, who ends up turning into one of the monsters over the course of the movie.
    • All they have to do now is make the theatre so dark that you can't see what's on the screen, that way it will be just like the game.
    • Its not just that its set on Mars - it's that it has nothing to do with Doom at all.

      - not set on Mars, but "random alien planet".
      - BFG is "bio force gun"
      - heros will be more "commando-style" and less army looking (from the interviews).
      - bad guys are experiments, not Demons from Hell.

So, is that sounding *anything* like Doom to you?

I wasn't planning on watching it till it came out on latenight TV and then only if there was nothing else on.
    • That was supposed to be funny mods. In reality, I'm most likely going to be dragging myself to the theater the night it opens just like all the other times I went to see a horrid video game remake only to wonder why I was there... Mortal Kombat, Mario Brother, and all the other movies that were just horrid. But I'll go to the theater nonetheless in hopes that it will actually be good. I hope they actual prove me wrong because I have been a fan of Doom since I put the demo on my 486sx.

...the Duke Nuken movie has been postponed until October 2010 ;)
    • Actually, Duke Nukem is PRIME for a movie. Duke was a likeable character, and more interesting right off the bat than Doom. Although the story was still weak (aliens invading earth...) there is more to build on there (other characters, sub-plots) than a Doom movie.

Except I'm not going to include any of the bradeys. It will be a sci-fi flick on mars with hell beasts.

hate the 'sponsored link' advertising, used among other places on the article? look for "Universal's website" on the story - now, when you click 'website' on that.. did you except that you'd be taken to universals website, that's where you wanted to go anyways, right? bzz wrong, the sponsored link goes to some domain selling service.

  • Given that most movies based on video games suck, a delay in the Doom movie can only be a good thing! More worrisome is all of the free publicity said likely bad movie will get because of the "link" to the Columbine shootings. All of that said, maybe it will be a good show afterall. The first Mortal Kombat movie was pretty good, so there's at least a little hope... Yeah...
    • Why? Well there are not nearly as many talented people around as you might think, so the talented people tend to be booked and can't just come to a job 3 months later. If they can just delay whatever is being delayed it is a rather big indication that none of the people involved are in high demand.

This movie is going to be bad. Just how bad remains to be seen. We can at most hope for bearable bad OR so fucking bad it becomes good again. Most like it will be unbearable bad. Oh well, who needs a movie when y

      • If they're planning on releasing it at any point this year, they probably have all the footage shot. If they're making any changes to the movie at all, it's editing and special effects. More likely they want to release the movie around Haloween to get in on the scary movie rush.
    • A move to later in the year means they think they have a shot at Best Picture.

Just as many were expecting, the movie quality is probably _not that good_ (to say it in kind words) so is being pushed back to avoid interference with the sales of Doom3 products right now, at e3 and during the summer. Also to have a little bit more of a chance as a "halloween" season movie (when crappy horror movies are released).

Whatever the case, this is a good sign to avoid this movie like ebola, wait for the dvd to be released and rent it in blockbuster (which will probably be a few weeks after theatrical release)

Seriously guys what did you expect? is a low budget film (most of the budget was expent in fx) barely associated to a hit videogame and was made in what? 1- 1 1/2 years? expect the review in www.somethingawful.com instead of an oscar nomination.

I thought they already made the Doom movie but called it "Resident Evil" for some reason....

Seriously, watch the opening of RE and compare it to the opening of Doom. Change the town for mars or something maybe.
  • will you be able to swap in your own bitmaps in place of the actors?
  • I remember hearing several years ago that Tom Berenger was tapped as being the main "marine" for a Doom movie. This was long before Doom 3.
  • Please just either cancel or rename this movie. Please? :(
  • The film is believed to be set in more contemporary times than the sci-fi games, and focuses on a viral outbreak rather than an invasion from Hell - much to the annoyance of fans of the videogame series.

Bummer. I won't be paying to see it then. C'mon, it's DOOM; a game where you shoot demons from Hell. What are they keeping from it, the double-barrell shotgun? Basically, it's Resident Evil with a male lead.

Dwayne Johnson, better known as The Rock, plays a leading role in the movie, alongside Karl Urb
