wo1verin3 writes "Voltron is coming to theatres!. While details are sparse, we do know it will be produced by Mark Gordon ('The Day After Tomorrow'). I'm still waiting for the DVD sets." From the article: "The 'Voltron' animated TV series debuted in 1984, about the same time as Hasbro's Transformers toy line, igniting a morphing robot phenomenon. According to sources, Voltron has generated $750 million in worldwide licensing and nearly $200 million in toys and merchandising since 1984."

    What does 'Since 1984' mean? What was the cutoff date for those stats? Prior to any news of a new movie, have there been any Voltron toys in stores for years? I don't recall seeing any for a long time now.
    • For a while they covered up the Voltron name with stickers that said Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. They sold zillions of Voltron toys this way.

      Well, there were the Godaikin "Goraion" (get it? five lions?) available through 1985/1986.

      The original series was called "Hyaku Juu oo Goraion" or "King of 100 beasts Go Lion". It enjoyed a run on Japanese TV from about 1981 to 1982.

      Check google for "golion" and "torrent" to see if the fansubs of the first few episodes are still available.

      Clearly someone hasn't watched Saturday morning TV in a while. A newer CGI version called Voltron: The Third Dimension [tv.com] was on a few years ago. My kids got their introduction to Voltron through that dreadful version.

    I'm waxing nostalgic for the good 'ol days of 1984, when cartoons were Japanese, cheap, and inventive, when toys were mass-marketed towards those clicks that like them..... I was in a click in my elementary school - we were the Voltron Kids. We were enemies with the GI Joe guys, and I eventually became a traitor because I liked Thundercats and became friends with the Thundercats. In reality, I could use less nostalgia and less crap in Hollywood. Transformers, Voltron - what's next, My Little Pony Strikes Back???

    In addition to this awesome news, they mention that a transformers movie is coming also. Please let them not mess up these movies. These have the potential to be the coolest movies of all time, as long as they don't turn them into a "Look what we can do with CGI" showcase. Even that would be moderately cool, but with a good plot these would excite me.

      Beast Wars was good, better than the orginal series. The orginal series... Is not as good as you remember. The other recent TV series (what's the plural for series?) are utter crap.
      • That's 'cause BW was done by Canucks (like the originals), while the rest were done by Japanese studios. They drew on their backgrounds. The Canadian show was basically "Reboot with Transformers" while the Japanese show was "Pokemon with Transformers". Logically, the former is better, not to mention more stylistically consistent with the original, American show.
      • I think one of the coolest moments in all of Beast Wars was when one of the two moons exploded, leaving some very *familiar* looking scarring across the face of the other moon.

        Plural of series... serii, possibly?

    That's a legitimate question, since there was that Voltron CG series in the late 90's that, honestly, I thought had much much better storylines than the original series. Granted, the CG made Voltron look like a toy and not a force to be reckoned with.
    • Well, unfortunately, due to motion capture abuse, that CG show also made the entire cast look like plastic action figures. As an aging nerd, I gave it 5 minutes before deciding that it was as completely unwatchable as the original would be right now.

    Sure, ruin Star Wars, Dukes of Hazzard, Transformers, and millions of other memories from my childhood days. Why not ruin Voltron.

      Being a little dramatic over a movie we don't actually have to go see, aren't we? I wonder how many knee-related forehead injuries this story caused.
    • Are kids today even allowed to have bikes and forts? Do they play outside or just watch crappy remakes all day?

      I took my Transformers, Barbies, He-man and Star Wars toys outside and buried them in my sandbox, and the neighbor's kid had his GI Joes do a rescue mission. Kids today have playdates and cellphones. Bah.
    • And we wonder why country music is so prominant in the South... the sad poor folks have nothing better to do than watch TV all the time, and get depressed and write songs about how the new movies are suckier than the old ones!!!!

    I still remember wanting a Voltron so bad before Christmas that one year. And luckily I was in Sunday School at that time so my prayer skills were sharp and I put them to good use.

    Needless to say, God told my parents to buy that thing.

    from the sounds of it, this will be the *Lionbot* Voltron. I can recall with envy some of the kids that had the Japanese import *Lionbot* that featured all of the shooting missiles that the American distributor (using the *Voltron* brand) was afraid to market.

  • There was a Voltron feature movie where the Lion Voltron and the Auto-Voltron teams combined to fight both mutual enemies. Before the fight, the two leaders were at a target range, neither of them missing a perfect shot each time against each other. The crews were watching the spectacle, bored.

    I prefer the Lion, although the Auto-Voltron had more versatility to create other specialized fighters.

  • TFA states that Voltron is made up of five smaller robots (this must be referring to the Lionbot, the Autobot had 15 vehicles; 5 land, 5 sea, and 5 air). It also states that they will be fighting against the Drule empire, but the only Voltron to fight the Drule empire was the Autobot. The Lionbot fought King Zarkon and his Robeasts. Perhaps they are just combining the two storylines, since the took place in the same era/universe.

  • Act 1: A quick history on the formation of the Voltron team, the discovery of the ancient castle with its lost advanced technology i.e. Voltron and establish some weak character development
    Act 2: Introduce the current despotic galactic overlord looking to rule the entire system. Lead antagonist looks ugly as sin and suffers from severe halitosis.
    Act 3: Some more time fillers like travel to different planets and maybe a pitiful romance with some soppy love interest.
    Act 4: Show down with the rogue beast

    • Robobeast slaps around individual Voltron lions, things look bleak for our heroes.

    • Lions form Voltron.
    • Voltron kills robobeast.

  • I'm all for a Voltron movie, but "The Day After Tomorow" was the worst movie I've, sadly, paid money to see in a long time. I have little faith that anyone involved in that horribly contrived plot could do justice to Voltron.

    I will not be surprised if the Voltron movie involves a gratuitous timber wolf chase scene through an abandoned ocean tanker.
