The original series was called "Hyaku Juu oo Goraion" or "King of 100 beasts Go Lion". It enjoyed a run on Japanese TV from about 1981 to 1982.
Check google for "golion" and "torrent" to see if the fansubs of the first few episodes are still available.

I'm waiting for the RL Thundercats movie to be made, starring a bunch of unfunny former SNL people, and done as a pathetic farce that nobody wants to see. That's just the sort of thing Hollywood is convinced people want for some reason.

The plot was about the cheesiest thing of all time. The plot was exactly the same as any of the disaster films. Every single movie about a disaster revolves around a separated family trying to get back together after an earthquake/blizzard/flood/tornado/volcano/nuclear bomb. The only variable is how the city gets ruined.

I believe there were 3 different Voltrons, but only 2 made it to the states (I'm sure someone will correct me). The Lion Voltron was the only one to have a 2nd season, which I heard was produced in the US and this would make sense since the quality didn't seem to be as high.
I personally preferred the vehicle Voltron. The storylines seemed much more complex, even at 12 years old.

The five lions Voltron was stupid.
Opinions vary, of course, but I have NEVER known anyone who watched both and preferred the five-lions version. The fifteen-vehicles Voltron series was simply better written and more interesting.

Are we talking about the same Transformers? Do you mean animation details? Because the animation was in the same style (you mention EVA so I think you might be talking about a later version of Transformers in which case it's unfair to compare animation quality to that of Voltro

Some of the transformations were totally off too. Look at the comparison of some of the toys vs. what they looked like in the cartoon. In some cases, they aren't even close because the cartoon totally changed the shape or size of parts during the transformation. The toys couldn't magically make half of
