God of War the Newest Video Game Movie 78

warpwhistle writes "Sony Computer Entertainment's God of War is the latest videogame property to be snatched up by Hollywood studios. Universal announced today that it has secured the rights to the game, and has tied producers Charles Roven and Alex Gartner to the project. Gartner has produced such films as Batman Begins, Three Kings and Twelve Monkeys, while Roven produced Out of Time and Barbershop 2."

  • Why would the first director team up with the second? The first's resume makes me semi-hopeful, while the second's...not so much.

      They're producers, not directors. Gartner's poor resume probably won't prevent this from being a good movie.

      Answer: Money.

      What baffles me is why Hollywood keeps throwing cash at video-game-themed movies. They all stink on ice, and most of them lose money.

      Resident Evil was a movie about Milla Jovovich's thighs, and for that reason alone it did well enough to warrant a sequel.

      Likewise, Tomb Raider was a movie about Angelina Jolie's fake breasts.

      Neither film had anything else going for it, and considering the outstanding shapes of Milla Jovovich's thighs and Angelina Jolie's real breasts (let alone the massive fake ones), one could argue that the video-game essense of these crappy movies probably dragged ticket sales down.

      I mean, Milla Jovovich or Angelina Jolie... running around and shooting stuff... while showing off their wonderful thighs or breasts... How can you possibly make a dull, modestly profitable movie out of such a rock-solid formula for a blockbuster unless some other factor is utterly crippling the production???

      Clearly, the video game adaptation is box-office poison.

        What's funny is that we're getting to the point where the games will cost more, get better (voice & motion capture) quality talent, and attract more creative and original people than the movies.         Do they really loose money on them are you sure? or is this more of hollywood "accounting"? With merchaising and other factors there has to be a reason why they keep insisting on trying this tactic.

      Producers don't actually have anything to do with making a movie. You'll never actually hear anyone say, "ooo, he's a good producer."
    • Well, The Handmaid's Tale was a very good movie, everything else of Gartner's is so-so.

      On the other hand, Roven's career really looks like it went down the toilet around 2000. A godawful German Rollerball remake, the Scooby-Doo movie, and the sequel to the Scooby-Doo movie? I'd kill myself.

    If this includes a representation of the sex mini-game, does that mean it will get an R (M) rating, or will Hilary throw a fit and make it NC-17 (AO)?

      Heh, I keep wondering when the torch carrying, censorship mob is going to stop beating on GTA and turn their attention to Hollywood. That's the true target in all of this afterall. The video game fight is just a warm up.

      • yup. I just saw Mr. and Mrs. Smith. That was original. Dunno about good, but original. Alternately, Hotel Rwanda (rented that recently) was based on a book iirc, and nobody can say it wasn't good.

        Now, the thing is that movies based on good books are good. The problem is basing movies on stupid pop culture. Then again, one person's pop-culture is another one's literary classic.

        The thing about games is that things tend to get better with every sequel. Engines get more realistic, gameplay gets more complex, scripting/modding tools get better, etc. Sometimes, sequels are only vaguely based off of the original, in terms of storyline. Sometimes, the sequel is a completely different story that's using the name of the original as a form of marketing by association e.g. Final Fantasy.

        • That's because games are still evolving while movies have reached the point where absolutely anything imaginable can be done. The difference between a movie made in the 60s and one made in the 70s is far greater than the difference between one made in the 90s and one made in the 00s.

          Well, I'll agree on the Devil's Rejects comment, especially since the movie was simply the worst I have ever seen, but I have to disagree on the others.

          The Island is similar to Gattica, but Gattica sucked and the Island was good, thus voiding Gattica.

          Wedding Crashers... Have you seen any Kevin Spacey movies? Have you seen Wedding Crashers? No comparison...

          Tim Burton's Corpse Bride is NOT Nightmare Before Christmas 2 just because it uses the same stop motion animation. You could say Terminator 2 is like C
        • The Island is just a remake of "The Clonus Horror" (which you may have seen on MST3K as "Parts: The Clonus Horror". Although, given how bad the original is, I'm not surprised this hasn't exactly been their advertising campaign.

    Looks like the names are switched up in the post. Alex Gartner produced Barbershop 2 and Out of Time while Charles Roven produced Batman Begins, Three Kings and Twelve Monkeys. Even the imdb links in the post show this.

      Damn, that's my bad. Was trying to get this out as fast as possible. A lot better names tied to this movie than most movies based on video games though
      • Oh I definantly agree. I was excited from the moment I saw Charles Roven produced Batman Begins. Anyone that helped turn that movie franchise around definantly brings hope to newer movies (especially ones based on video games).
  • After a ton of people complaining about crappy hollywood movies, far too many bad sequals, and superhero movies, this is their plan to bring back movie-goers? If history has taught me anything, all these video game movies will be horrible, and not worth seeing. The only one I think has any hope is a Metal Gear Solid movie, and that would only be good if directed by Kojima.
    • A Metal Gear Solid movie would only be good if it had some crazy gimmick like the games. Like, if halfway through the movie Hideo Kojima jumped out through the screen or something. I can see him doing that. Maybe the screen would flash "When you see '!,' shout 'halt'!" You know, get the audience involved--but someone wouldn't get it, and would be pissed because everyone's "ruining the movie."

      Besides, unless Hayter played Snake, or you did some crazy voiceover thing, it just wouldn't be right. Not to ment
    • As much as I love MGS, hollywood would find a way to ruin Kojima's masterpiece. There's no way that a movie would be able to convey the same excitement that we felt when dueling the cyborg ninja or the supernatural battle that we had with Mantis. I just don't think that any director, no matter how good, could complete the transfer over to the silver screen with a game like MGS. That said, I'd love to see Kojima write an original movie, as I believe that his writing talents are the best in the industry.

    Let's just hope future games-turned-movies don't go the way of the Super Mario Brothers movie.

    I wouldn't mind seeing a Half Life movie. ValvE has admitted they have been approached by several studios to make the movie, but have turned them down because they all contain a love story (which is definately not in the game) or other deviation from the plot. I applaud ValvE for not trying to recklessly profit from their franchise and retaining Half Life's credibility, and I hope other companies follow suit. Noone wants to see a beloved game turned into a B-movie.

    If there ever was a HL movie, I hope it does for action movies what HL the game did for the FPS genre.

    First off, God of War the game, kick all kinds of ass. The movie I expect will blow big donkey dong. For some reason, I can't help but expect that the great storyline (for a video game) of revenge is going to be wrecked in the movie by some stupid love story. We'll see Kratos setting off on a quest of revenge against Ares, only to be caught up in a "not meant to be" love story with some bimbo, probably Athena.
    I'll admit, I'd be more likely to enjoy it if they kept the cold, Kratos who kicks ass and just uses women to try to stave off the memories. It'd almost have to be a low budget film, with lots of fight scenes and boobies flopping about.
    • The question is . . . will they keep the orbs? I mean blood everywhere is cool and all, but red orbs are so much cooler!

      Seriously, though... if they make a GoW movie, it would probably look like a Kevin Sorbo Hercules movie with more blood and more CG.

        That's probably true. And, I'll admit, I'd be fine with that. I always thought that the Hercules show was good, except for the fact that they never killed anyone. And they acted all shocked if someone tried. Give me a God of War movie with swords, togas, and gorgons getting their heads ripped off, and I'll be content.

    A lot of people confuse "preproduction" with "coming soon!" release, do you remember the metroid movie? the halo movie, the simpsons movie? all those movies have been greenlighted one way or another, even some directors have thrown their card in the hat, but the chance for seeing those films dome is actually rather slim. First of all theres a ton of projects ahead of them (important projects btw) second the "game to movie" thing is beginning to smell bad to hollywood producers.

    It turns out video game fans are much harder to please than expected (duh! big surprise considering the media stereo types them as horny,drunk teenagers going "xtreme!" all the time) and other than them people is not that interested in seing videogame adaptations, On top of that we have to remember the abysmal "Uwe Bowell" phenomenon, people may have laughed in their movies on how bad they are, but producers ending up losing money over them probably werent too amused. Actually Blood rayne is probably stucked in distribution hell due to that.

    Also condidering how the "Doomed movie" [conxdesigns.com] is turning out, we are probably off that way.

    Honestly I don't understand why anyone would think that just because a videogame is popular, it can automatically be turned into a movie. I really liked God of War, but that doesn't mean that I need to see it on a movie screen. Just like I don't care to see it in paperback, on the WB, or hanging in the Louvre. The video game is a completley different medium because it is almost completley interactive, while the movie is not. It is the interactive aspect of videogames that makes them enjoyable. Can you
    • In contrast I am thinking of pitching my movie idea for "The Paperboy" a young boy's quest to obtain 100% of the people that live on his street for his paper delivery route.

      It has all the features of a great movie, ghosts, tornados, people trying to run him over on his bike, some sweet jumps, and the spinny newspaper headline shot at the end of each week to tell you how he did.
    • Not only that, but God of War wasn't even that popular. It was a great game, and a hit among hardcore fans, but it never reached the levels of popularity like GTA, Zelda, or Halo. They would have been better off choosing a game that more than a million people have heard about.

    Wow...if this gets into production the censors are going to have a field day. GoW was all about blood, guts, dismemberment, sex and boobies. Sounds like the norm for most of the world, but america will be getting this with a nice NC17 rating.

    As a side note, i saw someone mention the whole halflife movie thing. I thought it would be cool to have a movie based on halflife 2, but to showcase the events between halflife 1 and halflife 2. This way it wouldn't even have to include any of the characters from the g
