I never envisioned The Rock playing Sarge. It's an interesting move and I'd certainly like to see how it plays out. I can see it from a few angles but not from other. After reading the book series, one gets a little more insight into the characters (though admittedly not much) ;)

Oh well as long as they dont say the interdemensional portal was opened as the result of a TCP/IP stack overflow it cant be that bad.
  • The Rock is awesome. He mixes exactly the right amounts of camp and talent to make the best... "special" movies - the kind you sit down to enjoy with friends and an excessively large bucket of popcorn. Awww yeah. Movies that take themselves too seriously are boring.
    • I'm one of those people who likes watching movies with Dwayne Johnson in the, too. I hate professional wrestling, but The Rock really does bring just the right amount of acting (and honestly, he isn't terrible - maybe he just needs a film to let him actually act in it instead of what they've been giving him). He was great in Standing Tall and the movie about the girl who ran away to the jungle that he had to go after. Scorpion King was okay, but not great.

I'd really like to see him do a movie that's more th
      • Honestly, his campy over the top style of acting might be well suited for stage rather than screen. On stage the movements and emotions have to be exaggerated quite a bit so the audience can really feel it from a distance. Hmm... or maybe it's just that pro-wrestling basically is a stage play. Usually and old school good vs evil morality play at that. Just with more body slams.

I've been told The Rock was hillarious in "Be cool" by several friends of mine, though i haven't seen that movie yet. Still, he has a star for action movies, with the right mixture of charisma and ass-kicking - like you said, he was great in "Walking tall" and "The rundown"

PS: Vin Diesel was excellent on "Knockarround guys", one of his very few movies i can stand watching.
        • Vin was also in Saving Private Ryan. They guy trying to help the little girl and who the sniper used for bait IIRC. Like Dwayne, some of there roles are dumb, but the more I see these guys being interviewed and learn of their business dealings the more I realize that they are far smarter than some of the characters they play.
      • BTW... It's Walking Tall, not Standing Tall... And The Rundown was about him chasing a guy, not a girl.

The teaser trailer seems to say that the discovery the of last 10 percent of the human genome is what makes the creatures into what they are. No mention of hell or portals at all. Hmmf.

Still, it doesn't look half bad.

This looks like it may turn out to be a half decent sci-fi thriller movie. I'm almost giddy to see how well it turns out.

The coolest part of that trailer was the end with the huge Doom logo, since it, let's face it, kicks ass.

Unfortunately, the rest of the trailer looks like an advertisement for most other movies of this genre. I was really hoping the Doom concept would carry over some unique ideas and reasons to watch the movie beyond the popular title, but I don't think this movie is going to be any different. And that's a shame.

    • Well, it should be noted that this is a TEASER trailer. No big concept, no high science fiction preaching, just enough explosions and monsters and hard rock music to wet our appetites and to make us be eagerly anticipating its release.

A more informative trailer will probably be released in a month or two.

Besides, its a movie based on Doom. What were you expecting, sci-fi on the level of 2001 or Blade Runner?

      • > What were you expecting, sci-fi on the level of 2001 or Blade Runner?

        That would be very nice.

I for one would rather get the BR Director's Cut DVD that go see Doom The Movie.

    • half way through the trailer I was like "I've seen this, oh yeah, Resident Evil!" God I hate Hollywood.
  • Why would I pay to see the preview of a movie I'll have to pay to see? Or perhaps I'm having a revelation, realizing that movie costs have skyrocketed because they've been showing so many previews before the movie?

Rocks are a bit big, and you typically have to drag them in from way over there. Nukes are nice and small for a given yield, thus cheaper to lug around. I guess there might be circumstances in which rocks make sense, such as when you've got plenty of time to prepare and have a good solar system transport infrastructure.
      • Who needs nukes? Everyone gets this wrong. Everyone except Heinlein, that is. The real tactic is to drop rocks.

And to think, we've wasted so many resources on building and researching nuclear weapons, when it would have been more effective and far easier to deploy a giant catapult!
  • ...because it's my opinion, but am i the only one *completely* let down by the trailer? It looks.. mmm, cheap - the sets, the costumes, weapons, even the non-CGI monsters we've been told so much about. Not to mention giving away a major (at least from the game) part of the story at the very end, or the whacky story (human genome, eh?)

By the way, Rottentomatoes.com is now hosting [rottentomatoes.com] the same high quality trailer from IGN, without crappy subscriptions.

If I don't see some Hell, I am going to be disappointed. I mean- what is Doom without Hell?
  • I swear that's what this movie is. Oh man we figured out the human genome now we have to inject us some T-Virus...except ON MARS. Unless this trailer is a giant ruse and figuring out the genome made marines super strong to fight villains when a portal from hell opened. Sadly, I don't think that's the case.

Gah, what is with this. Instead of using the plain old horror story plot where a doorway to Hell gets opened up (i.e., although this is a run-of-the-mill horror plot it's still perfectly good stuff), it looks like they've turned this into yet another anti-science movie. Things that we already know that may make this movie not suck:

    1. No hell.
    2. No Doom Space Marine armor.
    3. The guy was supposed to be the last person alive.

What we don't know that may make this movie not suck:

    1. The virus came from hell.
    2. The Rock weilds a chainsaw, double barrel shotgun, and the BFG all before the end of the movie.
    3. The Rock is last person alive, dons on the Doom Space Marine armor, and takes the super stim pack and starts a World Wrestling Federation type of scene with the end demon and punches it's head off after body slamming it and then doing a double suflex off the top rope while playing the E1M1 sound track with real guitar riffs and at the closing scene goes back to earth and the rabbits head is on a pike while the cities are smoldering.

    But one can only hope...
  • The only real thing that would make this movie watchable is if the rock ruined some zombies sh*t with a chanisaw, and even then it still might suck.
