Bin Laden's Death Being Used To Spread Malware 94

wiredmikey writes "Following the successful operation by US forces to kill Osama bin Laden, Internet users are searching in the masses for any details about the incident they can find. Cyber-criminals know this and have already been at work to 'poison' common search results hoping to gain access to people's computers and infect them with malware."

Bin Laden's Death Being Used To Spread Malware

  • So far all the posts, including mine, are really spammy. I think that tells us just how much anybody really cares that the US finally caught their scapegoat for all the world's ills.

So Afghanistan was a complete waste of time, then, since (supposedly) they were only there looking for him.

Everything is used to spread malware. So Osama rates up there with child porn, penis enlargment, hair loss, belly fat, viagra, cheap drugs, and people wishing to deposit millions of dollars into your bank account?

      Yes....

And I'll LMAO if this comment gets modded "Informative". Sillier things have happened on /. - I'm pretty sure that the mod system is a placebo for the users, and that it's really a random number generator, or some of the pigeons from PageRank moonlighting...

      • One day I looked and magically all of my recent posts had lost a point - somebody got himself mod points, surfed out to my user page and modded down every comment I'd made.

Score: +4 (troll) was the most amusing. Still got karma to burn. Wish I knew who went after me, though. Revenge is sweet (unless your name is Osama).

    • Just a reminder for slashdotters to send another friendly reminder to their elderly parents not to click the tempting links offering videos of bin Laden's death.
    • The question is, why is everyone rooted? Do a simple google images search for any popular celebrity. Click on some images and you'll quickly be redirected to download "Antivirus 2011" or somesuch.

Its easy to blame Windows users for downloading trojans, but the real question is why isn't anyone securing their websites?

You forgot Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger, "new and shocking" footage of Lady Di's crash (which should get some traction again due to the british royal wedding), and of course all the fake reports on various entertainers' deaths. Poor Britney Spears died almost every week before I finally got my spam filter up and running.

I swear I read this same article every time: "[Insert world event here] being used to spread malware"

Personally I'm waiting for the next step: Slashdot article "[Insert world event here] being used to spread malware" being used to spread malware.

Hurry up and bomb Nigeria, y'all.
  • CHRISTIANABAD, Pakistan, Monday (NTN) — President Barack Obama has announced that the hydra has been conclusively beheaded [newstechnica.com] by US forces in Pakistan.

Mr Obama said it was "the most significant achievement to date in our nation's effort to defeat the hydra. We can all rest safe now."

A US official said the hydra's head had been buried at sea, to prevent the grave becoming a shrine. "But trust us — we got the actual hydra, all right. You know how good we are with getting this stuff right."

    World lead

  • That didn't take long at all!
  • ... here on Slashdot, its just another excuse to slip in a few more Goatse links.

    Tradition is a powerful thing.

  • ...we can't have nice things.

  • After I heard the news on the radio on the drive into work. I was expecting some SPAM dealing with this. Whether it be a chain letter or links to bogus sites with promises of the picture. Guess I'm more of a realist than a cynic.
  • Bin Laden causes turmoil for the public!!!

Guess maybe you don't really die once you hit celebrity status.

Or is that if you get digitized on the interwebs?

Dang it, TSA better start groping my email for terrorist, or something.

  • Ben Laden was malware. He has been fixed.

My colleague is an internet marketer. After hearing about Osama's death, he quickly made an 'Osama Bin Laden is dead' fan page and monetized off of it. Bought a domain relating to the page and then setup a CPA (cost per action) advertisement, one of those content blocker things. Him and I also did the same following Michael Jackon's death. He has made quite a living off of it, just by spamming social networking sites and users are duped by their own stupidity.
