YouTube Expands Live Streaming To All Channels 71

An anonymous reader writes "YouTube today announced it is expanding its live streaming service to all YouTube channels. The Google-owned company now only has two requirements: your account must be verified and it has to be in good standing. If you have both, but don't see the feature yet, don't worry as it's rolling out 'over the next few weeks.' YouTube Live was previously only available to a small number of individuals and YouTube partners whom Google deemed worthy to test it out. The video site then opened up the feature to channels with at least 1,000 subscribers, and then at least 100 subscribers. Now it's available to all."

    There is likely to be an exodus of Youtube. The thing is, that Youtube's current Copyright regime will destroy Youtube. Youtube is fast becoming a site where we are all gullty until Proven innocent, or guilty until guilty no matter what. Hopefully, other sites will appear and take Youtube's place. Even Mark from Classic Game Room is leaving.

      This is why Youtube will still be around. There are already plenty of other sites, but even people like you who are frustrated with Youtube are unaware of those s ites.

        Youtube is more or less the only option.

    • Very unlikely. YouTube is integrated in to most modern media products e.g. TV's, bluray players, consoles etc. On these, these is pretty much no alternative. And for most end users, it works well. And any alternative that exists, is likely to be sued out of existence by copywrite holders for using game content without permission etc. Google are just covering there arse. It's a business, with a product you've been happily using for free for years. If it were owned by Apple, trust me, it'd be way more lim

    • Not to give them a free pass, but this 'guilty until proven innocent' is a byproduct of the entertainment industries. If you don't operate this way you WILL be sued by them, and if you are small ( your new start-ups you are wishing for ) you will go out of business. If you are large it will eat away at your bottom line and your board will complain.

      My hunch is that Google execs could really care less what is on YouTube personally, and really hate spending the extra resources playing 'copyright cop' but they

  • Google is hoping they can get Twitch's customers without actually having to buy Twitch. Good luck, why would anyone stream from Youtube?

    When Google started shoving G+ down everyYoutube user's throat, I abandoned my 10+ year old Youtube account and moved all my videos to Vimeo and Dailymotion.

    Youtube is Google is a privacy nightmare.

    The last video I posted on Youtube before letting my account go derelict is a static image with a text describing why I will upload my videos elsewhere, and where to find them, and that video got many, MANY likes and comments from upset users. To me, that says I'm far from being the only Youtube user who's sickened by what Google has turned it into.

    • My biggest beef w/ them was that videos that were uploaded couldn't exceed 10 or 15 minutes, or some such arbitrary limit.
    • I tried to upload a video to Vimeo. After the initial upload they _warned_ me that my video was below their guidelines when it came to framerate, which is true. Since my video [youtube.com] had no motion in it, just a hundred or so images, I didn't see the issue. Plus they did _not_ say they were rejecting or stopping the rest of the process (whereby they convert the video or whatever they do). Instead they said they were processing it...and the status stayed this week for several weeks (until I gave up checking). I

    Several month ago we set up a server to live stream some of our faculty lectures. Now we'll have to look into whether it makes sense to continue running our own server - it's not like YouTube is unreliable or costs us anything, and we already post the recordings on our YouTube channel afterward.

    But I must admit the ham-handed attempts by Google to force you into maintaining a Google+ presence to go along with your YouTube channel is highly annoying! And I do wonder if yet another shoe will be dropping soon. If Google thought they could force everyone to share their YouTube videos from their Google+ pages without killing their cash cow, I'm sure they'd have done it by now. At present, all they've succeeded at is annoying people.

      Just remember that YouTube will be showing ads to your students, and some of those ads are unskippable.

      Is that the corporate/educational image you want for your institution? Students should not be distracted by advertising when they go to your website to watch lectures for classes.

      I strongly encourage you to pull the plug from YouTube and host your own video material. It's VERY easy to do these days, just encode up the video in the right format and use one of the many open source player "widgets" (for want

      • Education Apps customers actually have the option of not allowing ads to be included with their YouTube videos.

      • yes but people don't seem to get that. I did just that so it's not really a big problem. I don't take care of my G+ account. And honestly, you just gotta be careful with what you upload nowadays. You HAVE to make sure you got permission to use someone elses work. This means, uploaders HAVE to work and stop being lazy and bitchy. I do make faire share of work and upload video game commentary and I never got a strike (yet). If i do, then I didn't check everyone...plain and simple. thats how it works...

        This is a huge pain in the ass. I am attending university part time and their email system uses Gmail. Switching back and forth between my main Google profile and my school email is usually a painful process, one which often dumps me into error pages, redirect loops, or back to a homepage. Other open tabs are automatically logged out of one account when I switch to the other.

        You can always make a G+ account just for the purpose of youtube, yet never use it for anything else, right?

        Yet if you do not enable multiple account signins, Google will be more than happy to merge your accounts together. It's constantly asking even post-merge if I want to keep my youtube signin and name versus using my G+ profile.

    Can someone explain to me how this service compares to the likes of UStream or Twitch.tv?
    What is this YouTube service intended to be used for?
    How is it better or worse than the previously mentioned services?
