Google Launches Customizable 'Live Cases' For Nexus Devices (techcrunch.com) 44

An anonymous reader quotes a report from TechCrunch: Google is launching a new service today that allows you to create $35 custom cases for its Nexus 5X, 6 and 6P phones. There are two variations of the Live Cases: one that allows you to pick any photo and print it onto your case, and one that lets you design and print a stylized map with the help of Google Maps. Both variations allow you to select a couple of filters and other styling options to personalize your case even more. Google says there is a programmable shortcut button on the back of the case that will allow you to launch your favorite app with a single click using NFC. Once you've created and ordered your case, Google will also let you download a wallpaper with the same design.

Call me underwhelmed & disappointed. I was hoping this was going to announce sled-like cases with a built-in flash drive that looks (to the phone) just like a USB flash drive hanging from an OTG cable.

If I had a 3D printer & knew somebody with a Voltera circuit-board prototyping machine & a decent 3D scanner, I'd design something like this myself....

      This.

It's basically a very expensive phone case printing service with very limited choice.

I was hoping for a Qi wireless charging receiver. It's about the only thing that the 6P lacks.

to pay to keep my phone in my pocket, unseen. What a useless product.

For twenty five dollars I want custom ROM to free up my memory. I use like six apps. The rest are a waste of space I'd rather have my music using.

Stupid Google. A half billion computers and you can't generate custom ROM images for twenty five dollars on demand? If you could, for Nexus, then other unlocked phones are waiting for you. It's just a matter dependency trees and a download app. Get with the program.

Rather they spend the effort making a higher-end 5 version with wireless charging...

Perhaps Google should focus on making phones that actually work without lag or locking up when you try to take pictures with the camera instead of fancy cases. That would be much more impressive. https://productforums.google.c... [google.com] https://productforums.google.c... [google.com] https://productforums.google.c... List of phones I've owned which had no lag or locking up when trying to take pictures:

      iphone (original)
      iphone3g
(when the i3g died in a hurricane and itunes was still antiquated enough that new phone == paying for all apps / tunes over again, I made the switch...)
      nexus 1
      htc g2
      htc evo3d
htc evo3gle (or whatever it was called... commonly called 'eagle')
sony psx phone (whatever that was called)
      htc shift
      nexus 4
      nexus 5
      nexus 6
      blackberry priv

The sad part is, I know I've missed at least two phones in there. And those

Funny thing is, the Nexus phones are the least laggy Android phones on the market. The most popular phones (Samsung) are always laggy thanks to TouchWiz and bloatware.

    • I've already replied with a list of phones which didn't suffer these problems... After looking at your links, both refer to the 5x. I wish you'd phrased your observation so it didn't appear as a blanket attack on google-made or google-engined phones; while it's precisely correct, it's deceptive.

    • you do not think google should have already done it before why google play has always bugged
  • oh, how the mighty have fallen!
once there was technological breakthroughs/innovations that benefited everyone, and made money for the company. usually by simplifying things(others have made overly complicated and inefficient ) and by sticking to core. then the benefits were so obvious there was no need for much fanfare.
now things that others can do better with more expertise, are made more complicated and expensive than needs be , and then hyped as if they are the greatest innovations.

How does /. determine the related stories that are shown at the bottom? At best they are 'other old stories'...

    • At least the two articles about low wages plus "Why I defaulted on my student loans" make sense -- wasting money on fancy phone covers is the true cause of many a bankruptcy.

Tried to make a case with a photo I made myself of a rendering I painted. I made the image. And took a capture of that image and tried to make a case.

Nope. "The photo you selected cannot be used. It may be copyrighted or indecent"

No you idiots. It's my art and quite decent. Fuck you. I can buy a vinyl case decal for less money anyway and get whatever I want printed on it.

I really hate my Nexus anyway. I want a new phone. Maybe I will accidentally break this one and be forced to get the hell out of it.

      It may be copyrighted

      But all images are copyrighted.

  • My current phone is a Nexus 5X and even I couldn't care less about these live cases.

  • These exist for the iphone from a 3rd party, I believe.
  • You can find companies that do that on EBay for far less. I think the last custom case was $12 US
