California Earthquake Brings Scattered Damage (cnn.com) 84
The strongest earthquake to hit Southern California in 20 years left scattered damage Thursday morning and was felt from Las Vegas to Orange County, the US Geological Survey reported. From a report: The quake, with an early magnitude of 6.4, was centered near Ridgecrest, a community west of the Mojave Desert and about 150 miles north of Los Angeles. Reports of scattered damage, including rock slides and fires, rolled in by midday. At least four large aftershocks, from 3.5 to 4.7 magnitude, and dozens smaller were recorded, officials said. In Los Angeles, the temblor was felt as a long, rolling quake, and buildings rocked back and forth for at least several seconds. Before Thursday, the largest quake in the area was in 1999 near Barstow, said seismologist Lucy Jones of the USGS. Diane Ruggiero, general manager of the Hampton Inn and Suites Ridgecrest in Ridgecrest, told CNN's Paul Vercammen that the hotel has significant damage.

That usually suggests a relatively big quake a few hundred miles away, based on experience living in S. Calif. The closer they are, the sharper/jerkier the movements, in general.
If I had felt jerky motion, I would have began yelling for everyone to duck and cover.
A family member who was walking the dog at the time didn't feel it. They probably thought it was the dog pulling at the leash. That damned dog does that.

Well, we are something like 200-250 km away from the quake -- I'm also in LA currently (North-eastern part), and felt/heard the quake. It was enough to mildly rattle the windows, and set a suspended lamp in my room swaying.

That must be a hell of a big quake, then. Will it slide westward, rolling over Africa -- or jump eastward, right over the fly-over states?

Also, the pacific plate is heading east towards the fl-over-states, not west and out to sea.

No, I was responding to the "woosh" not offering a "woosh". The post I responded to did not get the idea of east of San Andreas fault. The joke was quite apparent. Hence the map and compass comment. Seems you had the "woosh" there.
That said, jokes aside, the reality is that the portion west of the San Andreas fault is actually moving east. Nothing "woosh" about that tangent.

That would be a neat trick, since the Pacific plate is moving to the northwest [pnsn.org].
