California Earthquake Brings Scattered Damage (cnn.com) 84

The strongest earthquake to hit Southern California in 20 years left scattered damage Thursday morning and was felt from Las Vegas to Orange County, the US Geological Survey reported. From a report: The quake, with an early magnitude of 6.4, was centered near Ridgecrest, a community west of the Mojave Desert and about 150 miles north of Los Angeles. Reports of scattered damage, including rock slides and fires, rolled in by midday. At least four large aftershocks, from 3.5 to 4.7 magnitude, and dozens smaller were recorded, officials said. In Los Angeles, the temblor was felt as a long, rolling quake, and buildings rocked back and forth for at least several seconds. Before Thursday, the largest quake in the area was in 1999 near Barstow, said seismologist Lucy Jones of the USGS. Diane Ruggiero, general manager of the Hampton Inn and Suites Ridgecrest in Ridgecrest, told CNN's Paul Vercammen that the hotel has significant damage.

I live in Los Angeles and didn't feel a thing. Stop exaggerating.

Buena Park. Felt it decently for over 30 seconds. Not so much that anything fell, but it did get my attention and kept it for half a minute.

I felt a gentle rolling sensation, like being on a boat.

That usually suggests a relatively big quake a few hundred miles away, based on experience living in S. Calif. The closer they are, the sharper/jerkier the movements, in general.

If I had felt jerky motion, I would have began yelling for everyone to duck and cover.

A family member who was walking the dog at the time didn't feel it. They probably thought it was the dog pulling at the leash. That damned dog does that.

Well, we are something like 200-250 km away from the quake -- I'm also in LA currently (North-eastern part), and felt/heard the quake. It was enough to mildly rattle the windows, and set a suspended lamp in my room swaying.

I felt in east of LA for sure. I was getting motion sickness from it when reading my computer monitor. :( Same again from last night's 8:19 PM PDT 7.1 quake.

Did not feel it. I was sleeping. No damage. I hope people who were affected get help asap. The last strong quake I felt was in the 1970's. My bed shook, hanging lamps were swinging. I ran outside and the power and telephone lines were swaying. Neighbors were in their yards with the what happened expression. There may be another strong one coming.

I was born in Ridgecrest Hospital and grew up in China Lake (the actual Navy R&D base). There are a number of active faults there including the Garlock fault and earthquakes were a common occurrence. When I moved to Berkeley for college and felt my first quake I was surprised that people were so excited then learned that while San Francisco is known for the 1906 quake, the number of quakes that could be felt was extremely low compared to the Searles Valley.

Though I'm probably showing my age, when I was growing up whenever we felt one we would have to check the to see if it was natural or an atom bomb test in Nevada (which was also not all that uncommon).

There was a period a decade or two ago when there were thousands of quakes in the area. So many that Sony shot a Diskman Advertisement [youtube.com] there.

I haven't lived there for quite a while and haven't gotten any updates from friends there, yet.

  • Didn't feel it. I live near San Diego.
  • I was in Westwood LA area in a tall building and I felt it quite a bit. The rolling lasted for about 2 mins, the quake part was about 10 seconds on 10 off then another 10 seconds on. I have experienced them before, but this was by far the biggest. No damage. I know buildings are safe, but that was a lot of scary swinging back and forth.

Wow, just got another one, a 6.9. Initially was a 7.1, shook everything for quite a while, even the Dodgers Game at the Stadium.

Some people manage by the book, even though they don't know who wrote the book or even what book.
