UN Calls For Investigation Into Saudi Crown Prince's Alleged Involvement in Bezos Phone Hack (cnbc.com) 33

The UN has called for an immediate investigation into the "possible involvement" of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the hacking of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos' iPhone in 2018, UN experts said in a statement Wednesday. From a report: "The information we have received suggests the possible involvement of the Crown Prince in surveillance of Mr. Bezos, in an effort to influence, if not silence, The Washington Post's reporting on Saudi Arabia," the statement said. "The alleged hacking of Mr. Bezos's phone, and those of others, demands immediate investigation by US and other relevant authorities, including investigation of the continuous, multi-year, direct and personal involvement of the Crown Prince in efforts to target perceived opponents." The UN statement concerns forensic investigations into the claim by Bezos -- the world's wealthiest man and owner of the Washington Post -- that the Saudi government carried out a cyberattack against him to extract large amounts of data from his phone, including nude photos sent to his mistress.

The richest man on the planet doesn't have a work phone AND a separate booty call phone?

What the UN should really be calling for investigation is Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman hacking Jamal Khashoggi.
    • Too political. This hacking story might have deeper repercussions and MBS won't have the benefit of the doubt.
    • They already did the investigation.
They found that MBS was unquestionably guilty,
to which he replied "Yeah? Still want my oil, bitches?"

Bezos is not the first, nor will he be the last, person to have a phone tapped by a foreign government. So why is the UN getting involved in this? I struggle to believe that it is to do with the Saudi's trying to suppress or silence the newspaper Bezos owns.

      Because he is rich.

Whereas they murder Jamal Khashoggi and openly admit it and nobody in power gives a shit because he was a journalist.

More likely, Trump's merry band of grifters asked the Saudis to cause Bezos trouble. So they plant the stuff on Bezos phone. When they checked up on Bezos, they found he owned the WashPost and that entity employed Jamal Khashoggi who was prominent in not buying Salman's schtick. So they figure they could whack JK to send a message to anyone else from the kingdom who thought like he did, and Trump's merry band of grifters couldn't say squat for fear of uncovering another use of a foreign power to go after on

That seems slightly more significant than him hacking someone's phone to send out nudy pics.

The journalist wasn't a rich US citizen.

      • What on Earth is making Slashdotters think the two things are unconnected? Are you all seriously unaware (1) who owned the company that employed Khashoggi and (2) how the two events occurred in roughly the same time period, the hacking just before the murder?

This is entirely about Jamal Khashoggi. It's not about Bezos being a billionaire. Do you all think he's the only billionaire in recent history to have his phone hacked by a nation state?

We are not unaware of the connection, but some of us are cynical enough to question why they are getting involved in this specific incident when they have been more than willing to turn a blind eye to similar events in the past. I honestly do not believe that the UN would have got involved if the owner of the newspaper that employed the journalist was not Bezos.

  • When millions of people across the global are hacked daily?
    • I challenge you to write just the headline that announces the outrage without falling afoul of the "Really how will that even work?" voluntary reviewers her at dashslot.

Also review the charter of the UN and see if they would be more concerned with unprovable inconvenience or international murder.

Washington Post has a journalist who is troublesome to the Saudis.

Saudis ask Bezos to set him up, and he does.

  • what sort of phone does Bezos use where he doesn't notice "gigabytes" of data being uploaded? If my phone was doing something like that I'd imagine I would notice the battery life drain/heat output (I suppose this is one of the disadvantages of being rich enough to have an truly unlimited data plan I guess...)
