US, UK Formally Blame Russia for Mass-Defacement of Georgian Websites (zdnet.com) 23

The US and UK governments have issued official statements today formally accusing Russia's military intelligence agency, GRU, with carrying out a coordinated cyber-attack on thousands of Georgian websites in October 2019. From a report: The incident, widely reported at the time, was considered the largest cyber-attack in the former Soviet country's history. According to a report at the time, unidentified hackers broke into at least one web hosting provider and defaced more than 15,000 websites with an image of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, with the text "I'll be back" overlaid on top. The former Georgia President was known for his fierce pro-Western agenda but is now a Ukrainian citizen after leaving Georgia in 2013, citing a political witch-hunt on corruption charges. The messages were reported as appearing on sites for the Georgian government, courts, NGOs, news media, and local businesses. In some cases, the web host disruption also took down broadcasting services for some radio and TV stations.

  • So Saakashvili is pro-Western, lives in pro-Western Ukraine but Russia is to blame, lol.
    • Why not? Doing bad things to others in the name of someone you dislike seems like a relative straightforward way to get other people to dislike that person too.

With what purpose exactly? The current Georgian president Salome Zourabichvili is strongly anti-Russian ('Russia is our enemy and occupier') so Saakashvili replacing her won't change much.

Remember how our globalist elites wanted to add Georgia to NATO? How insane that would have been. Not only directly contravening NATO's charter which strictly defines the alliance as the North Atlantic region, but Saakashvili's warmongering would have dragged us in, too. Which is why Slovenia, Slovakia, Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, and several other countries in Southern Europe are part of NATO.

Also, Georgia didn't invade anything. They went back into land which was theirs but which Russia was trying to steal. Just like Russia is trying to steal Crimea from Ukraine.

        You are full of shit.

        One cannot invade own territory.
There was open military buildup by Russia, with Russian army bragging on TV about training to "repel Georgian attack on peacekeepeers". Speaking of which, there was a joint, Russo-Georgian peacekeeping mission in the said Georgian province..

There was evacuation of civilians from separatist controlled territories, followed by heavy shelling of Georgian enclaves, that were escalating day by day. Two Georgian peacekeepers died on 6th of August.

There are three basic facts to keep in mind about the smokinâ(TM) little war in Ossetia:

          1. The Georgians started it.

Saakashvili isn't really pro-Western. He's done as much for Russia in Ukraine as he did against Russia in Georgia.

He is a prime example of someone the Russians managed to turn, and that's why he was forced to leave and why Russia is carrying out attacks and propaganda to try and get him back in power.

    • by Kartu ( 1490911 )

So, if it was indeed carried out by Russians, you'd instead expect pictures of Kremlin, instead of smearing Saakashvili.
      Sounds almost logical.

Pretty lame accusation, they broke into at least one, oh my, so someone from Russia hacked one web hosting provider and obviously really crap internal security, so once in, they had access to all web sites hosted and had a field day. So fucking lame to make it sound like that hacked 15,000 system, only a government could do that, what a crock of shite. Someone managed to hack just one poorly secured hosting provider and as result gained access to all those web sites. Something pretty suss is going on at tha
