Disney Kids Channels To Shutter In UK, Content Moving To Disney+ (hollywoodreporter.com) 42

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Walt Disney Company is closing down its three Disney Channels in the U.K. this fall and moving the content to its streaming service Disney+. From the report: From Oct. 1, Disney+ will become the exclusive U.K. home for content from Disney Channel, DisneyXD and Disney Junior, the company said Thursday. "The direct-to-consumer service, which garnered more than 54.5 million subscribers worldwide in its first seven months, will now premiere all the latest films, series and specials from the three Disney Channels, along with offering a rich and expansive back catalogue of Disney Channel titles in the U.K., including Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Descendants 3 and Phineas and Ferb," Disney said.

The Hollywood conglomerate added: "The Walt Disney Company remains committed to our kids channels business and continues to execute distribution agreements for Disney channels in many markets where Disney+ is also available, with the goal of giving our fans multiple entry points to our storytelling.â" One analyst suggested that it had been getting more difficult for Disney and its distribution partners in Britain to strike carriage deals for the company's three kids networks that make financial sense for both sides, making the consolidation of the channels' content a logical next step.

Blah, blah, blah...pay us more money.
    • Blah, blah, blah...pay us more money.

Disney may be getting more money, but are people watching paying more? I'm not sure they are.

I paid something like $69 for three *years* of Disney Plus at launch. Even now you can get a year for $70, or $7/month. (USD)

How much were people there paying for the bundle that included the Disney Channel? I can't imagine it was less than one of those prices.

Just because Disney makes more by directly collecting revenue, does not mean it has to be more expensive for you... A

      • ...that the cost of the cable/satellite channel bundles that used to include the Disney content will actually be reduced.

Do you really think that will happen?

        • Of course not, they'll replace it with something of 'equal' value like True Canine Crime TV or a 24 hr channel of someone dunking biscuits into a really hot cup of tea.

        • .that the cost of the cable/satellite channel bundles that used to include the Disney content will actually be reduced.

For the viewer, they will indeed be reduced - to 0 - because they will no longer be subscribed to. Possibly along with all other cable packages.

I never claimed those package prices would be reduced with Disney leaving. I am just saying in the end a viewer may likely pay less to watch Disney now than they had been. I suppose I am pre-supposing the user drops those packages... but given ho

People will just cancel their cable/satellite, especially if it was mostly for the kids.

So Disney+ is a kids channel whose main purpose is to sell junk to kids. So bad for parents on two counts, one very little content for the parents and two an endless advertisement targeted at children to buy Disney merchandise. Like Amazon their streaming service is pretty sucky and once people try it they move on. I lasted two months on Amazon, force fed advertisements to buy content (one month free and one paid for), our streaming service is SOOOO bad, here are advertisements to buy content to make up for

The same month Disney Plus started here in New Zealand - Our sole Pay TV Provider dropped all "Disney" channels (ESPN and Nat Geo Still exist) and removed content from their online offerings. Not sure if this was contracts not being renewed - or not wanting to give a competitor in the market another advertising channel. (or both)

    • Disney has been pulling core Disney content (Disney channels, Star Wars, Avengers, etc) off of other streaming services to make them exclusive to Disney Plus. I haven't quite formulated my reasoning on this yet, but it just feels wrong. As a condition of being granted an artificial monopoly, if you have a copyright on something and make it available to one service provider at a certain price (even if it's your own provider), you should be required to make it available to all providers at the same price. That's because there is so little content worth paying for on Disney+ that they are trying to "provide value" to incentivize suckers ^H^H^H customers into propping up yet-another-streaming service that no one wanted.

First I thought it said "carnage" then realized it didn't really make any difference 'cause it's Disney.

(Soon, everything will be owned by them -- and copyrighted forever.)

  • giving our fans multiple entry points to our storytelling

That is exactly opposite of what they just did. The problem is that twitter fellaters will believe the double speak.

  • Disney owns practically every other major mass market fiction franchise now and nobody blinks an eye. Okay once in awhile someone will speak up but there was more griping about Microsoft back in the day and now the Mouse is headed toward a monopoly on the very concept of entertainment.
    • You can't monopolize creative writing. That is why nobody cares, and why it doesn't impact other forms of entertainment.

      • You can't monopolize creative writing.

        You just described copyright.

You can also monopolize distribution channels, access methods, names, characters, formats, animation and production methods....

Huh? "Copyright" is "no one can make copies of 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.'" Trademark is "No one can write other books with the title 'Harry Potter and the blankety blank' or that involve those characters (with an intersection with copyright above)." On the other hand, if you want to write a book about a young wizard who goes to boarding school (and doesn't have all the rest of Rowling's world there with the serial numbers filed off) then go ahead and knock yourself out. As the OP said y

  • Can we have some grammar skills?
  • ABC/Disney has been consolidating their advertising platforms into Disney+ for some time now. It makes it simpler for advertisers to control all of their advertising in one place. Facebook/Instagram is like that, too. One stop shopping for advertising. It has nothing to do with the "consumers" of the media.
  • do the same in the usa and make ESPN an add on channel like HBO

remember the old Mickey Mouse Club theme song?

"Come along and sing the song, annoy your family...

    M - I - C

    See you later!

    K - E - Y

    Why? MORE MONEY!!

    M - O - U - S - E"

Compared to what the Mouse normally charges for things, seven bucks a month for their entire back catalog is almost mindbogglingly inexpensive.

  • Pretty Simple - Disney want all the money for themselves so they want their content only accessible on their platform.

    • And microsoft want a reason to extend the drm crypto pipe all the way from ap to display.

      • by bool2 ( 1782642 )
And that would be utterly pointless. Repeat after me:
        • DRM does not work.
        • DRM can never work.
        • DRM makes piracy more attractive.

Additionally, copyright was a contract with society where, for a small amount of time, an author could assert rights over a piece of creative work. Now, with virtually unlimited terms, (brought in by Disney playing a huge part), the social contract is void.

Copyright and patents. Yet another example of where whe legislature should be limited in passing laws disadvantaging society

        • You're preaching to the choir, you 7-digit SID# piece of shit.

I KNOW it won't work. That's why I'm so pissed off that Redmond thinks it's an important place to put resources.

Shut the fuck up and stop trying to mansplain DRM to me. I already know it's retarded. I don't need your retardation mixing in.
