CES Comes To Its Senses and Will Go All-Digital For 2021 (inputmag.com) 16

For the first time in more than 50 years, the CES technology tradeshow will be a digital-only event in January 2021. The event is the first big event of the year for the Las Vegas events calendar, and a huge cash cow for the Nevada city's economy. From a report: The Consumer Technology Association (CTA), which runs the event, today announced CES 2021 which was scheduled for January 6â"9, 202, will be completely online. "Amid the pandemic and growing global health concerns about the spread of COVID-19, it's just not possible to safely convene tens of thousands of people in Las Vegas in early January 2021 to meet and do business in person," said Gary Shapiro, CTA president and CEO. Back in June, the CTA said CES would go ahead in 2021, albeit with some updated protocols. That's the approach IFA in Berlin has gone for, and largely been lambasted over. Some speculate that CES 2020 may have inadvertently aided the early spread of COVID-19 in the U.S. after a number of attendees took to social media to report they got seriously ill after the event.

Sorry, but you can't truly appreciate physical product through a website.

    • I need to agree. There are a lot of product that are released that when we see them online they look like crap, while when we see it in real life we can really get its design.

The Apple G4 (Lamp) design, on your screen. It looks like a flimsy Computer Setup, in real life, it is much more sturdy as it is bigger in real life than what you think it is on you screen. Also with the Tesla Cybertruck, its online presence makes it just seem to look very odd, in real life, it is still odd, but you can see more of i

Oh. My. God. My wife needs a new phone, I spent this morning looking through options. Go look at the OnePlus and Motorola websites. Fucking abominations. I can't imagine subjecting myself to that for fun, much less getting any useful info out of the process.
    • I just finished up doing a lot of "attending" the virtual SDCC (ComiCon) over the end of last week.

Part of that was panels, but a big part of that was trying to click through every booth on the virtual show floor.

First of all, the technology they used there absolutely sucked with you clicking on booths on what amounted to a sketch of the show floor, with some hit points for the smallest booths literally being around 2-3 pixels across at the maximum zoom level.

But even if that had fixed that, there were SO m

    • I can't remember the last time I learned anything particularly useful from a report from a person at a tradeshow. It always just boils down to "here is what may be coming" or "here are some provisional specs".

  • "scheduled for January 6â"9, 202,"
    Is that Borg date/time?

  • "For the first time in more than 50 years, the CES technology tradeshow will be a digital-only event in January 2021."

So the CES show had previously been digital at some point in time prior to 1971?

    • "For the first time since its inception". Fixed it. Now you can't make a smartassy comment :) Anyway, this is ridiculous. Fuck this shit, fuck CES, and fuck everyone.
  • Parsing that summary, was it all-digital 50+ years ago?
