Huawei's Investments Are 'Predatory Actions' and All Countries Should Ban Them: Pompeo (reuters.com) 19

Investments by China's Huawei are not regular market transactions but rather "predatory actions" and all countries should ban them, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a newspaper interview on Friday. From a report: "Their investments are not private because they are subsidised by the (Chinese) State. Hence they are not transparent, free, commercial transactions like many others but they are rather carried out to the exclusive benefit of (China's) security apparatus," Pompeo told Italian daily la Repubblica, at the end of his two-day visit to the country. "(Huawei's investments) are predatory actions that no nation must or can allow," he added.

Can we take him to be serious if he admits to have been trained to lie, cheat and steal [telesurenglish.net]...and that he's not provided any evidence?

  • I'm not even doubting the premise, but there are plenty of tech corporations that can be as predatory as any nation-state without being shackled to one.

    • I recall years ago a company bought a competitor and literally tossed the source code in the dumpster to remove the competitor. It was a wise move as the competitor was nipping at the heels of the company and discounts were going to become the norm. Companies left on their own tend towards monopolies.
      • Was that company Oracle? Reminds me of a particular database acquisition. Wait, maybe I'm confusing it with one of IBM's acquisitions...

I feel like I have to issue the disclaimer that I have bought many Huawei devices over the years. It is quite rare for me to buy many times from any company. I'm too easily dissatisfied, my memory for past product failures is too strong, and I also like to try new things from new companies. The Huawei products I've bought have consistently been good values, though I do reme

    • I keep having Rollerball flashbacks. In the book/movie there are no countries. Only companies with their own national anthem.

That's what we seem to keep going toward.

  • Literally all our electronics are made in China save for a handful of CPUs and high end medical instruments.

Is this just a bargaining chip? I mean, it's not like Foxconn doesn't manufacture practically everything we use.

Pompeo is just a lying fat sack of shite, really incompetent, count all of Pompeos successes. Just wanders around waffling bullshit as a CIA agent running the US state department as a branch of the CIA, just turning the USA reputation into corrupt shite and of course staying in power via extortion. He is an embarrassment for the US, no one listens to the shite he waffles, they already agreed before the idiot opened fat stupid mouth or already disagreed and just hated the US government even more.

      What idiot t

While Pompeo is an incompetent fool (what else would you expect from the alleged administration), he's not a CIA agent. I "ran" the agency for a brief spell. After they realized what an idiot he was, I doubt they trust him with the real information. He's just another of the alleged president's goons.

    • Umm, Foxconn is not a Chinese company.

  • Okay, let's assume that's true. What of Facebook, then? Their platform encourages division and has led to (or exacerbated) social instability and even genocide in a number of countries. The US government isn't really acknowledging that, though. Sure, there have been hearings in congress about Facebook and US elections, but very little discussion of Facebook's growing role in sowing social chaos in counties around the world.

And no, this is not whataboutism. I'm acknowledging Pompeo's claims and suggesting we

  • that Pompeo is a pompous xenophobic ass, representing a dying and morally bankrupt administration. I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions. Seriously, just ignore these clowns. November is approaching.

  • But money is free speech, why are some organizations entitled to it but not others?
