Ubuntu Linux 20.10 'Groovy Gorilla' Beta Released

Cinnamon is an ugly Windows clone. Gnome may be broken by default, but it does not take much to make it functional. Aside from the default setup, my only problem with Gnome is that it is a little too resource heavy.

Personally, I think the best choice for a mainstream Linux desktop is elementary. Kubuntu would be my second choice, but you have to customize it so it does not work like Windows.

Yeah, heaven forbid that people use an interface similar to the one that has been refined down to as close to perfection as we can get without an extreme radical redesign that 99% of people don't want, and has been the go to interface for almost 30 years now.

No, lets hide commonly used things, and make people learn obscure keyboard shortcuts! Bonus if there is no screen showing the shortcuts, or how to even find the power off button the first time they log into the desktop!

That's certainly not the Windows UI. I modify *nix DEs to function like Mac OS X. It's a much more efficient and elegant design and most people are familiar with it (one of the beauties of OS X was that it never had a steep learning curve even for newcomers).

This is why I advocated elementaryOS, because its default setting is similar to OS X. XFCE is another good example as it comes with a dock, but it takes some work to make it look nice and optimized.

Without kde-mover-sizer Windows is nigh unbearable. All Unix desktops I've used were better, some after a bit of fiddling, most it of the box. KDE with 2 minutes of selecting my preferred options puts it ahead of anything else. Move and resize from anywhere inside the window, maximising only horizontally or only vertically with a mouse button click, the list goes on...

Unity was actually pretty good, but it took them quite a few releases to get to that point. When they initially included it as the primary desktop, it was buggy and slow... and I think that's where they lost a lot of users.

I'm using (Mint) Cinnamon right now, but only because I want a supported desktop and Gnome is still crap.

Not that it matters. Several others, including Mint, are Ubuntu. Mint made sense when it came out b/c of the multimedia support out of the box, but that no longer really matters. I find Mint to be just another redundant distro that just so happens to be popular.

Yet all this work on other components is ruined by Ubuntu being systemd-only. And systemd even fails to boot my main desktop, with WTF-level bugs elsewhere. So sorry, but not going to ever use it outside a test VM. And that's a tier that contains poo like Windows 10.

Wasn't even thinking of that. I was referring to the "Killer WiFi" chip found in Dell XPS laptops.

They are generally people that do not want belonging to one or another millionaire.
From this point of view, Ubuntu is the *worst* possible Linux distro.
And it's easy to just find Debian, the distro at the root of Ubuntu, while being driven by the most democratic of communities, through Condorcet voting.
