TikTok's forced sale to Walmart and Oracle has been shelved indefinitely as the Biden administration takes on a broad review of national security risks posed by Chinese technology companies initiated under his predecessor, according to the Wall Street Journal. From a report: Former U.S. President Donald Trump had ordered the popular video app, which is owned by China's ByteDance, be sold to an American company last year, citing national security concerns about users' data falling into the hands of Chinese authorities. But multiple legal challenges held up a deal. The most recent ruling on Dec. 7 said Trump's executive order likely overstepped his authority. Discussions have continued between ByteDance and U.S. security officials at the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S., the Journal reported citing people familiar with the talks. One of the people said possible solutions include use of a trusted third party to manage TikTok's data, which wouldn't require an outright sale. But no decision on how to resolve the issues is imminent as the Biden administration undertakes its own assessment of the risks of Chinese technology companies and data collection.

The reason Chuck Schumer, the Democrat majority leader in the Senate, demanded the CFIUS action against ByteDance is because he knew that in the future some people would get tickets to a Trump event and not show up.
See it all makes sense:
1. ByteDance violates the terms of the acquisition
2. Senator Schumer, then D minority leader, demands CFIUS takes action
3. CFIUS begins the investigation
4. Some people reserve tickets to a Trump event and don't show

Serious question, and one which no conservative has yet managed to answer: What frelling "national security threat" could Tic Toc possibly pose? It's already prohibited on all military and government computers and phones, and most corporate ones. Malware has never been found in the app or the web page (to my knowledge anyway), and since it's constantly scanned anything new introduced would show up immediately. This is not Linux with its 19 year old gaping security holes which run the military's supercomputers, or Windows with a hard to exploit but very dangerous vulnerability dating back to NT 3.51 which runs on almost every government desktop. I think the government has bigger fish to fry.

There are about 195 countries in the world. One has the definition that says that a conservative government is liberal, and an ultra-conservative or even reactionary government is moderate. Since it's 194 to 1 and I don't talk only to Americans then I think I'll go with the majority's definition. We're not the only culture on the planet that matters after all, no matter what our conservative media conglomerates say.

Consumer crap regularly gets exploited, and yet they still allow it? This sounds like dereliction on the part of the military leadership. I'm not sure why you'd specifically request that a CONSERVATIVE explain what Schumer was thinking. Conservatives generally poke fun at Chuck Schumer's thoughts; they don't even try to explain them accurately.
If you really want to know, I think you can read his original demand letter, in which he said the CFIUS action was needed. (That's the demand letter that started whole thing.) I'm sure he gives his reasons for demanding this whole thing.

I've honestly TRIED to do so in a way that isn't ridiculing him. Having worked in federal government security environment, a lot of that information is actually classified. This applies equally to whichever team is in the Whitehouse, but sure, Conservatives bad...

Trump was indeed right that China poses a massive global threat, but unfortunately a number of his actions has made China a bigger threat. Withdrawing from the WHO, for example, made China the country that has the most sway, instead of the USA.

TikTok is used to mass surveil the US public, there is proof that TikTok has sent location of military bases to China, it has been caught recording audio and video without the app being open. Not a problem for me since I don't use that stuff, but it's definitely an issue for the less-informed/technical that don't understand the nuances.

It's a good point, and it is hard to judge as for sure any phone app will collect as much info as it can (which is pure profit), often it's not even by the app developer, but libraries used, yet the very timing of TikTok pursuit puts the whole "Chinese threat" as a reason into question, as the app had been on the market for a long time by then and the former administration had 4 years to address it, yet it became an issue only when TikTok users walked over former president's ego.
