Canada Bans Huawei Equipment From 5G Networks, Orders Removal By 2024 (theverge.com) 31

Canada has banned the use of Huawei and fellow Chinese tech giant ZTE's equipment in its 5G networks, its government has announced. From a report: In a statement, it cited national security concerns for the move, saying that the suppliers could be forced to comply with "extrajudicial directions from foreign governments" in ways that could "conflict with Canadian laws or would be detrimental to Canadian interests." Telcos will be prevented from procuring new 4G or 5G equipment from the companies by September this year, and must remove all ZTE- and Huawei-branded 5G equipment from their networks by June 28th, 2024. Equipment must also be removed from 4G networks by the end of 2027. "The Government is committed to maximizing the social and economic benefits of 5G and access to telecommunications services writ large, but not at the expense of security," the Canadian government wrote in its statement.

What took them so long? Justin Trudeau's new world order pro-Chinese liberal government is asleep at the wheel! It took them 2 years to think about it and finally decide to align with its allies!

For example, the previous conservative government didn't hesitate one second before banning creimer from ever entering Canada in order to protect its frozen recycled meat and cereal burger patties, ketchup and garlic bread stockpile. They did it right away as soon as they became aware and didn't wait one second.

The previous Conservative government signed and ratified a FIPA with China that allows them to sue us if our laws interfere with their investments in Canada.

Plus, they had two of our citizens held hostage because of the whole Trump extradition of Meng Wanzhou thing.
  • Well then, they get banned twice as hard it seems...

  • great deals on used 5G equipment.

I'd like to see clear evidence of nefarious behavior by these Chinese companies. Evidence was presented of Russia's plans to invade Ukraine, which raised trust in government motives. Why not here?

Look, I would not be surprised that China is behaving badly, but I have a hard time believing bland statements by the US and its Canadian and other satraps.

Oh, and please convince us that the replacements are better. Perhaps open-source your code?

    Trust, but verify.

I'm sure the Ministry of Disinformation could have whipped something up, but unfortunately they folded.

      • They may have folded, but they were backed up by the Redundant Ministry of Redundancy (apologies to Monty Python).
        • Just to clarify, it was the Firesign Theater that brought us the Department of Redundancy Department (as well as the Small Animal Administration and the Department of Spies). Monty Python may have Anglicized it into a Ministry.
      • Chinese companies aren't actually separate from the Communist Party. Aside from owners and societal power structures, CCP official are embedded in all major institutions and companies.
    • I have a feeling it was because Huawei would not install backdoors for the US. The politics are certainly odd. Back when the US was arresting their CFO Huawei was running feel good ads on tv in Canada.

You don't let the fox in the henhouse if it hasn't killed any hens yet, or denies having killed any hens even with feathers on its mouth. Please reference the African Union spying, and the fact that US intelligence has noted that any Chinese spys are picked off quickly due to monitoring. As in all spying, no one is going to give up their evidence easily (unless you're DJT with a cell phone). https://www.bbc.com/news/world... [bbc.com] https://foreignpolicy.com/2020... Yes its a bit of a coupe for local companies/competitors but its not really bad policy to source critical infrastructure from allies, even if there were no evidence of malfeasance from the chinese supplier.

I'd like to see clear evidence of nefarious behavior by these Chinese companies.

They'd never tell you everything, and even if they did, you'd still have to trust they weren't lying to you and faking the evidence. Might as well ask for a pony too.

Please nation states, show us all the details of your international spycraft so that Tokolosh and I can inspect it for ourselves. And it bet

All telecom companies provide wiretapping interface for secret services and law enforcement agencies, which can only be used by selected personnel in an emergencies. According to Robert O'Brien, Huawei should also secretly have had access to it, to capture data worldwide, since 2009. Germany, UK and Sweden have banned Huawei from their 5G.
  • Does this mean that double-good-socialist-Trudeau is just as racist as evil-capitalist-orange-man?

  • They should certainly van all US based hardware too as they have actually been proven to have backdoors for US agencies, wereas Huawei and ZTE hardware haven't and are only banned because Chinese government has some stake in the companies. The US want the hardware all over the world banned BECAUSE it is harder to hack for them.
  • A quick google of "globe and mail nortel hack ceo", top story: https://globalnews.ca/news/727... [globalnews.ca] It's the standard cautionary tale of how the executives dismissed evidence that didn't fit their opinions. It's pretty much settled history that "The Chinese" hacked Nortel and stole the intellectual property that became Huawei products sold at massive discounts to gain market share driving Nortel and others out of business. It's amazing how successful you can be if you don't have to do R&D and just steal
