Sid & Marty Krofft to Release NFTs Starting with 'Land of the Lost' (msn.com) 58

Long-time Slashdot reader destinyland writes: Today sees an event celebrating the 50th anniversary of 1970s children's programming giants Sid & Marty Krofft. (Born in 1929, Sid Krofft will turn 93 in July). And reportedly Marty Krofft has now partnered with NFT producer Orange Comet "in a multiyear contract to release NFTs based on the often enigmatic and much-beloved television shows they have brought to us since 1969."

The first one commemorates Land of the Lost — dropping sometime after September.

Today I learned their big break in America came from making puppets for Dean Martin's show, followed by designing and directing the Banana Splits and a string of successful children's shows on Saturday mornings. ( Land of the Lost, H.R. Pufunstuf, Lidsville, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters...) Looking back, Krofft muses that even today somewhere in New York City, "some guy 50 years old, remembers the damn theme songs. Because there were only three networks, so basically every kid in America saw our shows." In the article Marty Krofft describes their style as "a nightmare and bizarre" — or, more pragmatically, as "Disney without a budget" (while crediting future Disney CEO Michael Eisner for being their mentor).

Yet the article adds that "They were nearly unstoppable with styrofoam, paint and cloth. In a digital universe of truly endless possibilities, there is no telling where they could take their stories."

      Just joking. I could not possibly care less about NFTs. However, if I were an unethical businessman of some sort, then I would definitely love to have a list of the wannabe "customers" of Nothing For Tat. Yes, there's a sucker born every minute, but lists of suckers still save time.

      At least the banana splits taught us to count. It was the one show that made no sense, even if you were high.

      • Apparently, the Bananna Splits are psychopathic serial killers now according to a recently made movie that licensed the characters.

          I can't wait until the bloodbath of the Care Bears Movie. And maybe they can make The Get-a-long Gang an actual gang who slings dope, guns down rivals with the AK, and "You better get along, motherfucka!"

    These shows were proof that everyone was high in the 1970s. One had to be to write Far Out Space Nuts. And no one over 8 can watch these shows without being high. That is why anyone over 60 really does not have the critical thinking skills to understand climate change. Just to abstract for their pot and LSD degraded brain

    And letâ(TM)s not even get started on HR Puffnstuff, which was the best, but, you know.

      All the tech we're using to lower carbon emissions were invented by the age group you're mocking. Ditto for almost all the tech keeping you alive and healthy.

            And doubled the deficient as a percentage of GDP. We did goo under Reagan. Better under Clinton. Reagan because he kept government handouts high. Clinton because I had a well paying job.

  • The newest of these shows appears to be 49 years old. I've never seen any of them, and I'm 47.
    I suspect you'd probably have to be closer to 60 to really remember these.
    • Good kids shows from the 70s, 60s, and even 50s were re-run non stop over and over during the 80's and I have never seen any of these. And I watched a lot of TV. I guess you had to be there.

        Maybe it was a regional thing where these were shown as reruns? I never saw them growing up in Michigan in the early 80s.

        I remember it as being moderately scary, but also full of cheap costumes, sets, and effects, and the sleestak hiss was funny to imitate. And I thought those panels that crystals went on were pretty cool. They were cool in exactly the way that NFTs aren't.

      I'm 51, and those shows were repeated all through the 70's (and much of the 80's) in Australia.
      At least Land of the Lost, Banana Splits, and HR (hand rolled) Puff'n'stuff were, because I still remember the theme songs.

        That confirms what I was just thinking. These weren't shown where I lived in the 80s.

        • I remember Land of the Lost being broadcast in my area, but no other S&MK shows. This was around 1987 when there was a huge dinosaur fad going on, and this was likely the reason for LoTL being broadcast.

    • H.R. Puffinstuff began in 1969, so this "anniversary" is a few years late.

    • I'm 52 and clearly remember Land of the Lost, HR Puffnstuff, Dr. Shrinker, and their Saturday morning lineup. I also remember liking Sigmund the Sea Monster, but watched it a few years ago and realized it's terrible. Or just terrible for a 50 year old.

          Apparently they are still alive, but I doubt they realise what an NFT is. Whoever is owning or managing the IP now probally came up to them and said something along the lines of "There is this hot new craze going on that everyone is excited about, and we would like to use it to promote our 50th anniversary!". S&MK said "Great! Go ahead!".

  • If I buy an NFT for "Land of the Lost" what do I own? I don't own the rights, or even a copy of the video. What do I have? What can I do with it other than sell it to someone else? I'm pretty sure the answer is "nothing".
