China To Double Wind, Solar Energy Capacity by 2025 (france24.com) 40

China aims to double its wind and solar capacity by 2025, according to a new road map that also allows for more coal-fired power plants to bolster energy security. From a report: The world's biggest polluter earlier estimated it needs to double wind and solar use by 2030 to deliver on its pledges under the Paris climate accord. The latest plan -- if implemented -- means China might reach that goal earlier. But Beijing has also ramped up reliance on coal-fired power plants in recent months to support its ailing economy as the Ukraine war pushes up global energy prices. The country's central economic planner said 33 percent of power supply to the national grid will come from renewable sources by 2025, up from 29 percent in 2020, in a document released Wednesday. "In 2025, the annual power generation from renewable energy will reach about 3.3 trillion kilowatt-hours... and the wind power and solar power generation will double," the plan said. China, already the world's largest producer of renewable energy, has accelerated investment in solar and wind projects to tackle pollution at home, which researchers say kills millions every year. Beijing has pledged to peak emissions by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2060.

Wake me when they are deploying renewable energy fast enough that they stop building new coal plants.

Why, because nothing but perfection is good enough for you? Why not be happy they're building fewer coal plants than they otherwise would have done? If we listen to people like you, no progress would ever be made... the way to tackle problems of this magnitude is to break it into manageable steps.

        WAKE UP!

From the US Energy Infomation Agency (EIA) website [eia.gov]:
        * As of September 2021, developers have not reported plans to install any new utility-scale coal-fired power plants in the United States...
        * In 2022 Coal will account for 85% (12.6 GW) of U.S. electric generating capacity retirements

What new fossil fuel generation plants are being built are essentially all natural gas, typically to replace (or convert) SOME of the retired c

This is China not the US. So this is probably actually going to happen. They have no reason to put up a show to impress their voters.

There are plenty of griefers here on Slashdot. As one would expect. China is already world's largest producer of renewable energy. This is commendable. Much better than the accomplishments of armchair generals. If they are setting higher goals for themselves, they should be encouraged. We all benefit from it.

Russia and Saudi Arabia would prefer that they not do this. In addition to some on Slashdot, it appears.
    • by gweihir ( 88907 )

Indeed. These people cannot think beyond "China = bad".

    • China is already world's largest producer of renewable energy.

China is a big place with a lot of people. China may be the largest producer of everything but English Literature college graduates.

China is desperate for energy as there are a lot of people there and they are all trying to get to a standard of living on par with North Americans and Europeans. China is the world's largest producer of nuclear power plants too, but I don't see that brought up very often. Why is that?

  • Need more wind and solar? Make it so... Need to clear the protestors? Send in the tanks... Need to get rid of Islam? Build some concentration camps... There is no problem they can't solve. Shut up and do as you're told.

    • by gweihir ( 88907 )

Well, yes. But the way things are going, they will come out ahead with this strategy. That should at least make you think.

  • They should consider wave turbine power too.

I'm concerned they'll cut corners on the panels to make these deadlines.

But if they do, it will be a huge boon to both China and the world.

    • Wind turbine technology is mature, widely deployed, and well costed, and unlikely to throw up surprises in the long term.

They could build many many windfarms by the time they figure out how to make the wave turbines work at scale.

and unlikely to throw up surprises in the long term.

Are we really sure about that? We have heard the obvious issue with wind farm with bird strikes. Then there are people that bitch about the looks of wind farms. An I believer there was some group bitching about the sounds they make.

But what I'm wondering is if there are any effects of harvesting the energy from the wind itself. As these farms are going up we are going to be pulling a lot of energy out of thin air, it might be a good idea too look into exactly how much we can remove before it affects

        • Are we really sure about that?

Are you sure you understand China?

But what I'm wondering is if there are any effects of harvesting the energy from the wind itself.

If there was even the slightest, then the fossil fuel and adjacent industries would have been using it as part of its FUD campaign for decades.

As these farms are going up we are going to be pulling a lot of energy out of thin air

No they're not. Wind turbines actually can't pull out that much energy from the wind (relatively speaking) because they can only extract as much energy as would allow them to keep rotating.

You really shouldn't be answering my question as you really don't seem to know what the question is.

First, China has nothing to do with this.

Now the question is, again. Has any one really studied the effects of large windfarms on the environment when it comes to effects on the wind?

According to the laws of physics you can't create energy out of nothing. The electricity created by wind frames is done by turning the momentum of the air into circular motion and then into electricity. When this is

    • They should consider wave turbine power too.

I agree. That way China will go bankrupt faster.

I've seen the studies on energy production and the same four energy sources keep coming out on top, hydro, onshore wind, geothermal, and nuclear fission. We can rank the energy sources we have available to us on many metrics and on the metrics that matter most it's often those four but just in different order on top.
