Uber Now Delivers Cannabis in Canada, Says It's First Time a Major Third-Party Platform Is Able To Do So (engadget.com) 51

An anonymous reader shares a report: Torontonians now have another way to get cannabis without having to wait too long for it to show up, as Uber Eats is offering deliveries in the city starting today. Uber Eats has teamed up with cannabis marketplace Leafly to offer residents swift weed delivery from local, licensed retailers. Uber Eats claims this is a world first for a "a major third-party delivery platform." Users in Ontario have been available to order weed through the app since last November, but until now items were only available for pickup.

If you're in the city and feel the need to take the edge off, you can select the cannabis category or search for one of the retailers (Hidden Leaf Cannabis, Minerva Cannabis and Shivaa's Rose are the first three to sign up). You'll receive a warning that you need to be of legal age, which is 19 in Ontario, to view the products. After you place an order and the retailer confirms it, one of the retailer's own licensed "budtenders" will deliver your items. As is the case with alcohol orders, the delivery person will verify your age and level of sobriety before handing over the goods.

Trailer Park Boys did it first!
    • Quite a series of setbacks for the boys. First legalization putting a dent in their business and then Mr. Lahey getting carried off by the shit hawks never to be seen again.

  • mr nice guy is not going to like this!

Order the cannabis and Taco Bell at the same time! (Or do you guys get the munchies for Tim Horton's poutine ?)

Wow - I live a block from a Timmy's and never knew they had poutine donuts. But I just checked and apparently it was a thing 5 years ago.

Anyway, Taco Belch isn't that big a thing here in Canada - they're not nearly as popular as other chains you'd recognize, or Canadian-only ones you've probably never heard of like Harvey's, Swiss Chalet, and Pizza Nova.

As for the dope, I used to partake and was in favour of legalization. Now I regret that a bit - today's weed is a lot skunkier than it was even 15 years ago

      • FYI, cannabis hasn't changed, you have

Aside from the smell, second hand smoke can't get you high unless you were locked in a small room with many people smoking heavily

        • Yes, the smell is the only problem. I used to not be bothered by people smoking outside back in the 70's, but now I have to close my windows any time the neighbors light up, because that stuff really stinks. So I second the "a lot skunkier" comment, although I suspect there are still some strains that aren't.
      • Do other provinces allow edibles? Ontario has a great selection now.

I don't know about other provinces. I've never used edibles because the onset and the comedown are too unpredictable. When I smoked or vaped, I could predict to within an hour the time when I'd no longer be high. I might be wrong, but I would expect that window to be as large as 5 hours with edibles.

      • You learn something new every day. Apparently calling it "Tim Horton's" gives me away as an American; real Canadians call it "Tim's" or "Timmies" (not sure why it's not "Timmy's".) Just like here in Oregon and Washington we call Fred Meyer's "Freddy's". You see, we have a lot in common! (Of course, soon ALL American stores will be Krogers, but that's another story.)

It is "Timmy's" but the average person doesn't understand apostrophes, and they're hard to type on a phone.

On the other hand, usually you'd say "I'm going for Timmies, do you want anything?" or "here, have some Timmies," in which case "Timmies" could refer to the products you obtain at Timmy's.

  • Do they still do 'taxi' service? Or is that not profitable or something.
  • what backwards countries they are.

  • No snark on this one.

As a group reply to all of the 1-offs:
    1) This is good if it keeps people from driving high.
    2) "no smoking outside" - smoking is still bad for you and second-hand smoke is as well. That makes sense if it's following the existing smoking bans
    3) the only sketchy thing in this topic is Uber - if they're into it, money is most likely being made from a corner being cut - still doesn't make them a halfway decent company

Over the years, I've considered many bumper stickers of "good sense". Som

  • And if you buy $150 or more delivery is free.

    How's that Uber Eats?

  • This is great news. Now the potheads will hopefully never leave their hovels and inflict themselves on the rest of us.

  • Would be interested to see the stats for health issues. Over here in the UK, our terrible, terrible government were suggesting making cannabis a Class A drug, the same as cocaine and heroin. Even the lefties seem to have cooled on the idea of legalisation, possibly because we've got an issue with self control! It would be a massive source of income though for a cash-strapped government
