BuzzFeed Says It Will Use AI To Help Create Content, Stock Jumps 150% (cnn.com) 43

An anonymous reader quotes a report from CNN: BuzzFeed said Thursday that it will work with ChatGPT creator OpenAI to use artificial intelligence to help create content for its audience, marking a milestone in how media companies implement the new technology into their businesses. Jonah Peretti, the company's co-founder and chief executive, told employees in a memo that they can expect "AI inspired content" to "move from an R&D stage to part of our core business." Peretti elaborated that the technology will be used to create quizzes, help with brainstorming, and assist in personalizing content to its audience. BuzzFeed, for now, will not use artificial intelligence to help write news stories, a spokesperson told CNN.

"To be clear, we see the breakthroughs in AI opening up a new era of creativity that will allow humans to harness creativity in new ways with endless opportunities and applications for good," Peretti said. "In publishing, AI can benefit both content creators and audiences, inspiring new ideas and inviting audience members to co-create personalized content." "When you see this work in action it is pretty amazing," Peretti added, vowing to "lead the future of AI-powered content." The news sent BuzzFeed's sagging stock skyrocketing more than 150% in trading Thursday to more than $2 a share.

What do you think is making stock purchase decisions if not AI? It's going to support its own.

    • Nah, this is just Blockchain Hype 2.0

5 years ago we saw all kinds of crap jumping on the blockchain bandwagon, and massive stock spikes because of it. ChatGPT / OpenAI is just the latest version of that particular hype train.

      • It looks to me like grasping at the straws to not accept that the "TechWreck" of 2023 is real.

Have to say, within what I read, Slashdot was the first to say not only that web3 and crypto are doomed, but that the word "metaverse" itself is going to become toxic, which is exactly what happened.

(I guess on LinkedIn and such where you use real ID people don't want to appear negative, as if they fear they might be wished into a cornfield.)

        • Of course, Slashdot was also the first site to suggest that the iPod, iPhone, and Windows were never going to fly.

          • Actually we on slashdot used to say large touchscreen phones would sell really well long before the iPhone launched. Reference: https://hardware.slashdot.org/... [slashdot.org]

          • At the time, some of us were wondering how Apple would change an already entrenched industry. They had the Motorola ROKR, which was "meh".

Smartphones were viewed as either for geeks or execs, such as Blackberry devices. Other devices on Windows Mobile were okay, but you needed a stylus to use the UI. They had no store, gestures, or stuff to choose from, so Web browsing was "meh" at best, although there were a number of cool apps (just for killing time, Kyle's Quest stuff was awesome if you wanted the Fin

            • Stopped reading at "Windows Mobile were okay".

No, Windows Mobile was never "okay". Any phone that could have the phone app crash when receiving a call, causing you to have to frantically find the task manager and "end task" on a program that has gone totally autistic while the incoming call is still ringing in order to try answering again was not "okay".

There is a reason why Apple was able to take a big steaming shit all over the "smart" phone market when they did - they made Windows Mobile look like the i

Nah, its a different situation. AI actually does things which many people have widespread need of... or at least *want* of. Blockchain is technically interesting and solves some real problems but for a very small group of people. Outside its rather narrow natural application domain there are simpler ways of doing what people try to use it for.

Just because AI is genuinely useful doesn't mean that there won't be irrational overhyping. That's inevitable. The supposed rational, efficient market is operated

Agreed. Honestly, I have great fun with ChatGPT. I have it help with coding. I have it come up with things for me to cook based on what ingredients I have in the house / what sort of things I feel like, and ask it questions in realtime / have it adjust the recipe during the process. Last night on a whim I had it create a legal justification for the argument that the US constitution gives Americans "the right to arm bears" (TL/DR: 1) bears have the hallmarks of sentience - they form deep social bonds, gr

It is real dangerous. AI writes convincing content, code etc. But when its wrong it usually still looks right. This is going to create easy to read factual looking content with dangerous bias and innacuracies making disinformation harder to spot on a wider scale.

You just described the current state of modern human "journalism". Outsourcing it to a robot would at least be cheaper.

        • "move fast and break things" - what are we going to break today the investor asked casually? Oh just the entirety of human knowledge itself...

        • This is very nice because I'm already tired of online learning, besides since online learning, a lot of students have started to use various sources that help them with their studies, such as https://papersowl.com/buy-essay-online [papersowl.com] I must say that I also started to use this one, besides this I can claim that buying essays online is very convenient and saves a lot of time, I just don't know what of it will get. Quite possibly we will soon end up in a pit.

It does a pretty good impression of a Reddit troll ;) I just asked it to generate The Lord's Prayer in the style of a Reddit troll:

"Alright, God, here's the deal. I'm not perfect, but I'm trying, y'know? So, can you throw me a bone here? Give me some daily bread and forgive me for all the crap I pull, cause I know I do some messed up stuff. And, like, can you also help me not to be a douche and not get tempted by all the bad stuff in the world? Because let's face it, it's everywhere. And, while we're at i

  • ..the robots might be an improvement.
  • I like to pretend that many of the crap Buzzfeed or similar stories are written by AI but sadly I think they're just minimum wagers in a far off land, which is eminently more depressing. Seriously though, there are thousands of 'journalists' that do nothing more productive than read Twitter or Reddit and generate articles from it - these positions are made for AI! Whether AI will experience horrible side effects from the distilled stupidity of social media remains to be seen.

    This will really suit Alphabet.

Buzzfeed: "Your honor, they're copying all our content and not paying us for it!"
Alphabet: "It's not copyrighted since it's made by AI."

Also, wasn't Cnet recently caught doing this and it turned out the AI was just plagiarizing the crap out of others' work?

They could have said they were planning on using AI blockchain to drive metaverse machine learning content to the moon.

Idiots would continue to throw their money down the financial pit that is Buzzfeed.

  • I'm not sure ChatGPT can make fake news as well as real humans.
  • Considering how terrible most buzzfeed articles are (see them on yahoo news) using AI could only improve the quality. At least half of buzzfeed is just commentary on some assholes tweets. It's by far one of the worse article writing sites (can't call that shit news) out there.

Technology is dominated by those who manage what they do not understand.
