YouTube is Killing Stories 37

YouTube is getting rid of Stories, a feature for temporary posts, beginning in June. Users won't be able to post Stories starting June 26th, and existing posts will expire after seven days. From a report: Stories were first introduced in 2017 under the name Reels and were available to users with over 10,000 subscribers. Similar to Instagram (which in turn lifted the concept from Snapchat), YouTube Stories disappeared after a set amount of time; creators could use Stories to post updates or behind-the-scenes content to promote their channel. But looking around today, it doesn't seem to have caught on -- access was limited, few creators seem to be regularly posting Stories, and the feature doesn't get much promotion even from YouTube. In the absence of Stories, YouTube wants creators to instead post content to other surfaces on the platform: Community Posts and Shorts. The company recently expanded access to Community Posts, a text-based updates feature, and added the ability to have posts expire after a certain period. Creators can also share polls, quizzes, images, and videos as Community Posts, which appear in a tab on channels.

YouTube is Killing Stories

  • Is because they couldn't find a way to monetize it, you don't get ads with stories (at least I haven't seen any). It was to compete with tiktok and instagram, but no one uses it and creators aren't seeing the benefit. I always wondered why it came up on my feed.

    • Many of the Shorts I'm getting are just excerpts of larger videos, so creators are effectively spamming the ecosystem with duplicate content.

Yes, please... kill off Shorts, before they kill the entire platform.

Too late. YouTube already announced, '30 second, commercials that can't be skipped'. If that truly means the likes of uBlock Origin and such won't save us, YouTube is dead, at least to me it will become.

Adblock for Youtube works perfectly for me and has for years, my only issue is that sometimes its more comfortable/convenient to watch on the iPad

  • These were still a thing? I don't think I have ever run into these.

I made the mistake of watching a couple comedians dealing with hecklers in these little deals, which means my youtube front page is one row of regular vids, one row of "stories" repeating. It'd be nice if these behemoth sites started allowing the users to choose what they wanted on their front page, but nope. The algorithm is perfecter than human and knows better than you what you want to see. Worship the algorithm, bros. LOVE THE ALGORITHM!

Stories is just one of these feature YouTube put in there because others did it and they had some success. It didn't really fit in, people didn't use it, so they are killing it.

Maybe it will be the same for shorts, which I like to call YouTok. It is all the rage now, but it may not be that great for monetization compared to long format video. It works at getting people hooked, but with an endless stream of rapidly changing random content, the attention span goes to zero, so much that even ads don't stick. I guess the only reason YouTube is doing shorts is to keep users on their platform instead of going to TikTok, but that if people are watching shorts instead of long format video, YouTube is losing money.

    • Google has done Shorts dumbly. For one, the usual navigation controls don't work. You can't shift the time cursor to the middle, for example.

Second, it wastes screen space on desktops, they are all in a single column. Why not put them adjacent to each other so we don't have to scroll (when viewed on desktops). Without that, the prior way was better, because you had thumbnails of related content to the right. They didn't even need a special format for "shorts" if they are going to use a single column. I don't even know what that is, but they should have killed shorts. They're like... short videos, but vertical. Yeah! Everybody's favorite format, VV. /sarcasm.

In the spirit of competition can we now get Facebook to dump their version of "Reels"? They are just as worthless and far more in your face. I didn't even know that Youtube "Stories" existed. I was fine with that. I wish I didn't have to know that Facebook "Reels" exist.
