TikTok Videos Are Coming To 3,000 Redbox Kiosks (deadline.com) 20

Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, the parent company of Redbox, has partnered with TikTok to stream the platform's short-form videos on screens atop approximately 3,000 Redbox kiosks across the United States. Deadline reports: Third-party brands will also have their ads run alongside the TikTok videos via Chicken Soup's ad platform Crackle Connex. The agreement covers roughly 10% of the total network of Redbox kiosks, which are generally located outside of grocery, convenience and big box retail stores. The out-of-home ad deal is part of a growing effort across the industry to identify alternatives to linear TV and place brand messages in venues like gas stations, elevators and other locations. "TikTok is the go-to destination for short-form video consumption by over a billion people globally," said Philippe Guelton, chief revenue officer of Crackle Connex. "This new partnership provides advertisers a unique opportunity to reach new audiences and drive engagement. Our Redbox kiosks are in high-traffic locations where millions of people frequently shop, such as grocery stores or value retailers. We look forward to working with TikTok on expanding this partnership as our DOOH network expands."

Allow me to be the first to say... "Huh?"
  • We already now have gas pumps, checkout screens, kiosks around stores, etc etc, and now we get yet another thing playing ads and obnoxious videos at us while in public.

    • and this will send data back to china

If China really wants to know who is still renting The Fast and the Furious 42 - Mobility Scooter Drift on physical media, that's their problem.

        • Waiting for these mentioned in episodes of The Good Place [wikipedia.org]:

The fact you cant understand they are using it to do flow analysis on purchasing and movement habits....

So will the hidden facial recognition camera located inside the RedBox box

    • On gas stations, I always try pushing the circle buttons on the side of the screen to get those damnable things to shut up. And most of the time it does. The other times it doesn't, I just drive across the street. Using this strategy I've not been forced to listen to one of these public nuisances in years.
      • There are four buttons on each side of the screen (on the pumps I've used) and invariably the second from the top on the right side has silenced the audio. It's just a automatic response from me at this point to press it. Noticed the other day that while my car radio was playing a song it was sending me text advertisements from a law firm. Seriously who is going to read that or write the phone number being displayed while trying to drive an automobile? If everything is advertising then nothing is. If I wake

    • I'm honestly amazed talking gas pumps aren't vandalized more often. Sort of sad, really. Hoodlums are happy to steal your catalytic converter, but when it comes to providing society a useful service they're just as bad as anything else.

  • If anything ever told md to stay away from Redbox, this is it
  • Most of the Redbox kiosks in my area are outside the stores, so they have a cloth flap that covers the screen (it helps block sun glare while you use the kiosk). The ads can stay behind that for all I care.

Even if they ARE visible, I predict that most people will just walk right by and tune it out as even more background noise rather than "engaging".
    • Be a shame if someone slapped a big wad of gum over the speaker grille of every redbox because they were irritated by the sound. A damn shame...

      • Duct tape on the screen and speakers would be a damn shame too. Screw advertising. I'm sick of it. The more you try to advertise to me the more I resist your shit.

They still have RebBox DVD-vending machines?

  • "TikTok is the go-to destination for short-form video consumption by over a billion people globally"

    "Fifteen Million Merits [wikipedia.org]"
  • Just no. What the fuck use is this? It won't even be useful for ads; people will ignore it, and so will I, because I'm people too.

No spitting on the Bus! Thank you, The Mgt.
