YouTube's Latest Experiment is Playing Games (theverge.com) 21

YouTube is trying out games as its next experimental offering. The company is adding a new "Playables" section on the site that will include games that can be played on both the desktop website and mobile devices. From a report: Playables will only appear for "a limited number of users to start," and there was no list of game titles published at this time. 9to5Google reports that one of the games to grace the new YouTube Playables experiment includes Stack Bounce, which involves a 3D ball bouncing on top of rings you must smash through with well-timed clicks. If you've heard of the game before, it's because Google already offers it on its minigames service, GameSnacks.

My first reaction was pretty knee-jerk. If there’s one thing we don’t need more of, it’s video games! It’s a brutally overcrowded market. That said, wouldn’t it be cool to bring back the culture of user-created flash games that sites like Newgrounds and (the now defunct) Bonus.com had? There used to be a bunch of that kind of site, and now it’s been many years since I remember seeing people share a link to a game that is fun or funny for about 5-10 minutes before they move on with their lives.

Both creators and viewers are asking for better recommendations on long form video, better search, and less shorts. Nobody is asking for games on YT. Nobody is asking for more ads either, but I got an announcement today about them removing some ad controls from the creator dashboard so they can show more ads.

Patreon is going to start kicking their ass for real content. They just need to finish work on their video service, especially subtitles/cc and discovery. YouTube will be left with the shit channels reviewing consumer landfill.

I'm considering putting my content only on Patreon. YouTube will get a 60 second trailer/ad for new Patreon videos. So my ad will have ads. I imagine one day we'll have ads all the way down.

  • I'll stick with newpipe thanks

I've heard of it. They use it as part of the training for monkeys and apes in the lab.

  • since browser game sites were popular, with the 15 second attention span I guess its safe to start one again.

No spitting on the Bus! Thank you, The Mgt.
