OpenAI Is Working With US Military on Cybersecurity Tools (bloomberg.com) 11

OpenAI is working with the Pentagon on a number of projects including cybersecurity capabilities, a departure from the startup's earlier ban on providing its artificial intelligence to militaries. From a report: The ChatGPT maker is developing tools with the US Defense Department on open-source cybersecurity software, and has had initial talks with the US government about methods to assist with preventing veteran suicide, Anna Makanju, the company's vice president of global affairs, said in an interview at Bloomberg House at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday. The company had recently removed language in its terms of service banning its AI from "military and warfare" applications. Makanju described the decision as part of a broader update of its policies to adjust to new uses of ChatGPT and its other tools.

  • No, OpenAI was already in bed with the military.

  • OpenAI went to bed with Microsoft. If that doesn't tell you they have no shame, nothing does.

And so, just like all the other companies who want to make easy money in the US, they went for military spending pork - also known as your taxpayer's money.

While the military spending does need to be more answerable to audit, etc....

Military spending, ie Defense....IS one of the few, enumerated roles and responsibilities of the US Federal govt. contained in the US Constitution.

      • Exactly. And I'd guess if you want to lower the instance of veteran suicide, take their claims seriously when they say they have buzzing in their ears, vision that is 'wonky,' pain...based on a few cases I know of, I suspect a lot of veterans get enough runaround from the VA after a while they just say 'f--- it, I'm outta here, I can't take the pain anymore' and off themselves.

Defense is such a bullshit misnomer, and so is this constitutional enumeration.
Name ONE country that says "we're just going to fuck with them, we aren't after defending anything at all". Every warmongering aggressor is claims their actions are defense. Bush or Dems, they all are just defending "freedom" or "democracy" from evil russia/iraq/syria/palestinian man

    • Why are you against defence?

What did you expect from Sam Altman? His other project is to scan the eyes of everyone in the world and give them shitcoin crypto in exchange for it. You really think he gives a single fuck about not being evil? He was even kicked out of Kenya for refusing to comply with government restrictions on scanning their citizens' eyes.

I was one of the people excited for him to get kicked out for lying, but his clout and sphere of influence is too strong.

  • They'd be fools not to. I mean, come on. Sure, it's a bit like a drug dealer selling to kids saying, "If they don't get it from me, they'll get it from somebody else." But... it's the military. They WILL get it from somebody. You can "conscientious objector" yourself out of the picture if you like, but OpenAI is not a charity, a non-profit, or an altruistic group. They are a tech company. I have no expectation other than they will behave as such.

At heart, I'm more or less a hippie environmentalist. Certainl

OpenAI is a non-profit. Sort of. It's a non-profit, but it has a fully owned subsidiary that is a "capped" for-profit, with profits limited to 100 times their investments. The justification for that arrangement was that it would give them more ways to raise money, which would fund the non-profit's altruistic work to create "safe and beneficial" AI. Wikipedia [wikipedia.org] explains this unusual arrangement. "The nonprofit, OpenAI, Inc., is the sole controlling shareholder of OpenAI Global LLC, which, despite being a
