Canonical Launches Ubuntu Core 24 (ubuntu.com) 5

Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, has released Ubuntu Core 24, a version of its operating system designed for edge devices and the Internet of Things (IoT). The new release comes with a 12-year Long Term Support commitment and features that enable secure, reliable, and efficient deployment of intelligent devices.

Ubuntu Core 24 introduces validation sets for custom image creation, offline remodelling for air-gapped environments, and new integrations for GPU operations and graphics support. It also offers device management integrations with Landscape and Microsoft Azure IoT Edge. The release is expected to benefit various industries, including automation, healthcare, and robotics, Canonical said.

    Hey Rockwell Automation... can we finally get a ViewSE client or server that works on Ubuntu now?

  • I wonder what is the best way to do firmware updates in this environment. There is the standard method via apt or maybe even snap, but in offline environments where a firmware install (OS + the stuff that comes with it) all should be a certified version, and installed atomically like an Android update, I wonder how this can be done.

    No, for embedded, offline stuff, snap and apt won't do the job. It either will take a bootloader, or even a good old physical replacement of a SD card with a new firmware load

    * Minimum 512 MB of RAM
    * Minimum 1 GB of storage
    * amd64, arm64 & arm32, and riscv architectures
    * TPM 2.0 on x86, or OP-TEE on ARM for full disk encryption
    * Supports NVME, SSD, and eMMC storage

    Enough RAM to needed by Windows Vista but only enough storage needed for Windows 2000. /facepalm

If all else fails, lower your standards.
