Linux, Apache & Gnome Updates 25

Lot's of people submitted each of these, but the quick summary is that there are new GNOME 0.99.2 RPMs available at the usual places. Not enough for ya? How about a new Apache? 1.3.4 is now out. And if that isn't enough stuff to keep you busy, the Linux 2.2pre7 Kernel has also been released.

Nope, GNOME can only really make images inside gnome-canvas look better. It won't help with your topless Amazon background image unless someone writes a gnomecanvasroot application.

Better yet, maybe RedHat has paid Rasterman and co. more money to improve the giant useless icons on the panel.

For one thing, Rasterman doesn't do the panel, he does Enlightenment, Imlib and Electric Eyes. For another thing, most of what you see in screenshots of the panel aren't icons at all, they are active programs. Yes they are big, but if you want a mini-panel, you are free to make one.

My 52 inch monitor looks so great with all this awesome eye candy.

I'm glad you're happy. If you've got a spare 52" monitor laying around, I'm willing to take it off your hands :-)

My guess is that that's exactly why they went to the 2.2.0pre* releases. The more people get excited about these pre-patches, the more people will try them out, and the faster the remaining bugs will get squashed, and the faster we'll have a final 2.2.0. Hopefully, it'll also help reduce the *.0 version syndrome...

  • I know everyone is all excited about the 2.2 release of the Linux kernel, but at this point, why didn't they just continue naming them 2.1.xxx until they're done?

I've read both Linus and Alan Cox mention that 2.2 would be out around Christmas. Did they do this (start releasing PRE kernels) to at least come close to hitting their "ship date"? I certainly hope not! From the sounds of it, these PRE kernels are still just bug fixes. Didn't they call a feature freeze around 2.1.130 or so?

    Me? I'm waiting for 2.2.1 !! :-)

    according to ftp.kernel.org:

    ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.2/LATEST- IS-2.2.0-pre6

think someone pulled a fast on on Rob here...

  • Really? There's a pre-patch for it, but no final release.
  • The Gnome mirrors are always two days out of date at least (terrible, isn't it :). Anyone know a mirror that already has 0.99.2? ftp.gnome.org is always flooded.

  • I had 0.99.0 and I had to install with --nodeps because of a few old library dependancies (apparently rpm can install packages in the proper order, but won't uninstall correctly if any of the old packages depend on old packages you're trying to replace)

(Accept my apologies for missing my own deadlines on them so far)

  • This has already been publically explained. Picture the 2.1 series as an alpha test. 2.2.0pre series is then the beta test, encouraging a wider audience to try out the kernel, because hey, it _almost_ says 2.2! With a wider range of machines testing the kernel, the last bugs are more likely to be flushed out, leaving 2.2.0 as perfect as possible. So the short version is, they _want_ more people using 2.2.0pre, so that's why they named it something other than 2.1.xxx.
