Heretic/Hexen Source Code Release 29

Gregg M sent us a link to Raven's web site where you can read that they have released the source to hexen and heretic. It's available now, and the site states that they are hoping people will port to Be and Linux.

  • I looked at it, but discovered the file to download was a .EXE file (probably a self-extracting archive). Geez, what's wrong with a simple .ZIP file?

    I like the Quake source code [linuxonline.org] better.
  • I SUPPOSE its cool...but like i really couldn't care about Hexen anymore. It was a cool game at the time, but its like totally outdated, kind of like too little, too late. However it IS a good step forward for Linux gaming in general. What's REALLY gonna kick some ass is the simultanious Q3 release on Linux, Mac and Win32. Hell yeah :)
  • Well, I've never played hexen, so I'm not qualified to comment in it, but Doom as "just another bloody Wolfenstein 3D clone"? Doom was significantly more than just a Wolf3D clone. Its engine allowed a lot more things, like floors and ceiling heights, moving platforms, and walls meeting at angles other than multiples of 90 degrees. The concepts were different too. Wolf3D didn't have toxic slime (or whatever that damaging green stuff was).

    Likewise, Quake was a leap ahead of Doom. I'm not so sure about Quakes II and III, since my lowly P75 won't run them very well.

  • Funny... The one thing I hated about System Shock was the controls. Horses for courses.
  • I sure hope efficient high-res support comes out. I can play Descent in 640x480 but it is a bit slow and that mode does not allow the console to be scaled down. Plus I guess the code should be optimized better for non assembly for other archs.
  • Well, never actually liked Hexen (just another bloody Doom clone), but nice to see another game with sources out there.
  • Try using "unzip".

    Self extracting zip files are just zipfiles with a program header. They will unzip correctly...
  • I have a really, really big problem with highly restrictive, extremely one-sided contracts that you can find yourself bound to without your knowledge or consent. (Clicking on a button does not constitute a meaningful form of consent.) I wrote a longish editorial [microtimes.com] on this subject a couple years ago.

    I have ignored the terms of every shrinkwrap license "agreement" I have ever encountered. (In particular, I always reserve the right to disassemble and reverse-engineer any code that lawfully comes into my possession.) However, I still observe the precepts of copyright law, which is more than sufficient protection for software publishers.

  • While it's nice that you got the reply that you did, and it would probably be enough to protect you from legal action, it would REALLY be nice if some of these companies would take a glance at their license and make sure it says what they mean before releasing code under said license.

    Not meant as a flame towards Raven, releasing the code was definitely a cool thing to do. It's just that I've seen this exact scenario repeating itself lately.
  • I thought Hexen/Heretic just was an improved/modified version of good old Doom? Well, what about a GlHeretic or GlHexen? :-)

  • It would be awesome if the folks who are doing
    GL DooM and Boom (I think they are merging?) could incorporate the Hexen/Heretic code into their code as well, basically creating a generic WAD player.

    A lofty goal, and one that I myself am not up to, but I s'pose some good wishful thinking.

    BTW, I wouldn't flame Raven for this, but it would have been cool if they could have shipped a zip instead of an exe, seeing as they supported the idea of linux. But then again, anyone porting would probably need a DOS box lying around for testing the original operation.

    It is an installer BTW, an not just a self extractor.
  • This is really sweet news. If all game companies would follow this model of releasing source after a generation or two the world would be a better place. I certainly don't expect them to release source for modern games, but after they are no longer being sold opening the source can keep them alive. Cool!

  • Hopefully somebody will port this over to Linux/BSD, and do some kind of OpenGL port. GLDoom is very nice. I have to agree with the poster above that integrating Heretic/Hexen into GLDoom to have basically a pak player, would be awesome.
