Stop:Quickie Time 40

Jon Frisby wrote in to plug his Linux Based and Linux Focued Job Search Engine Brain Power. gr0k sent us a goofy rap by Netmaster 10baseT which you might enjoy, but then again, you may not. I laughed outloud. I was also unable to maintain enough beat to rap along. Mr. Black sent us a link to Stairway to Middle Earth: a page that tracks Tolkein/Zeppelin References. Believe it or not. Hans sent us a link to Stormtrouper Costume HOWTO. Suddenly my fashion sense seems award winning. And finally, Adam Wright wrote in to send us an amusing anecdote: "Some people claim that RedHat Linux 5.2 is not easy to install. Well, my roommate Andy Burchett, has decided to prove those poor lost souls wrong. He installed RH5.2 with his nose. Yes, he used his nose to type ALL stuff for the installation. The installation was started at 10:47pm EST, and was concluded at 11:24pm EST. Andy encourages all Linux users to try using their Linux in new and different ways."

  • Anyone with alot of spare time on their hands and is really interested in the Lord of the Rings should check out http://www.middle-earth.com
  • Someone starts up a web site documenting (with *hard* evidence, hah hah) the various _other_ appendages that can be used to install RedHat 5.2 ...
  • Ahh..I remember seeing the SVGA package being installed and thinking "WTF is this?". I'll give that a shot tonight.
  • blah, blah, blah, blah, blah,
  • That was really funny. A perfect start to a Friday.

I got electro-magnets in my TCP.

    ROTFL!!!!
  • Install begin at 10:12, first BSoD at 10:46
The tricky part was ... ahem ... you know ... the mouse thing
  • It'd be nice to see a page that relates various other bands to Tolkien (without all the stretching of coincidences (Hey...they mentioned Elves...it must be Tolkien related).

Gee...Blind Guardian's "Nightfall in Middle Earth" would take a few pages itself :)
  • So don't use XConfigurator. Just because redhat provides you with a particular tool doesn't mean you have to use it. I personally avoid XConfigurator like the plaque. I have never been able to use it. It doesn't give you enough flexibility and whenever I try to change the resolution / color depth settings with it it segfaults. So don't use it. Linux is about choice. If one thing doesn't work try something else. In this case, use xf86Config. You'll have a better chance of getting things working.
  • I had that problem too, But it is fixed in XFree-3.3.3, so you can use the SVGA Server with it. Also if you specify the chipset detection i think, you can get the 3.3.2.3 SVGA server to work with a ViRGE card.

  • We want CAD models for the costumes!
No proprietary file formats of course.
    What about IGES?

  • Damn. I haven't seen that in about 6 months, but it's still funny each time I read it.

  • Now THAT's a challenge!

Remember those indestructable keyboards from Atari 400's and Sinclairs...

Sigh... when OS's used Kb not Mb...
  • The BBC Micro had a key called Shift Lock, which was similar to Caps Lock, except that it applied to all keys, not just letters. It was generally considered nothing but a nuisance, but at last, there seems to be a use for it.

Typing with an elbow is impossible.

  • Hope you are reporting this as a bug to Red Hat - it's good to see the workarounds for installing semi-manually, but it's better if the install program just works.
  • Let's see him come install it on my computer, and I'll even let him use my hands. I've been totally frustrated trying to get X to work under RH 5.2 with my STB Velocity 4400. I once got it working in 8 bit mode, but when I tried to up the color depth, I lost it. And yes, I was using the newest version of XFree86, but I'm not a Linux guru by any stretch of the imagination.

I'll even let him use his hands.
  • Hmmmm.... I wonder how long it would have taken him to install *without* just using his nose?
  • I think someone listened to too much M.C. Hammer back in the day...
  • I missed the part in LotR where that happened :).

Seriously, its cool somebody came up with a website that covers Zep/Tolkien connections. I'd caught the obvious reference in "Ramble On" as a fan of both, but I didn't know that Jimmy Page and the gang were as into it.

Not so related, but I've always hoped the trilogy would be turned into a live action movie, I'm not a big fan of that hack Return of the King movie.
  • I really don't think people that say it's hard to install are talking about typing complexity/difficulty.

I *am* having a bitch getting RedHat up and going - well, X.. so do ya wanna help me (using only your nose) get this damn Creative Labs Voodoo Banshee working with X?
  • i had a problem with the red hat install when i deleted all my partitions and tried just putting linux alone on my machine...when it went to boot the kernel from the disk it would hang...but when i have a windows partition on my disk it works fine and dandy...=\, for now i'm stuck with windows on my machine...
  • your one fsckin' sick bastard...
  • I live in the same building as Andy, and I know him to do some strange things, but wow, this has topped 'em all!

    Definately a 7.5 on my weird-stuff-o-meter. :-)

  • No, really, please don't. :)
