Coolest Star Wars Collectible Ever 55

Joshua Gross writes "Looks like the big winner of last year's Taco Bell/Star Wars contest is cashing in his chips. For those with high 5-figure+ amounts to spend on a sport-ute, check out this Star Wars Hummer. My favorite part is the central tire inflation system, though the license plate (JEDI ONE) is cool as well. " That is just to cool. I think I would be embarassed to drive it though.

No, I meant the Excel, or perhaps an Eclat.

An early Esprit, maybe the later ones are too rounded fo my taste

And the only Elan worth talking about is the sixties one, and that has too much Emma Peel (oh, Emma) to Stars wars it.

The Lambo has too many scoops and fins, and spoilers for my taste, maybe the Star Wars universe likes spoilers and those go-fast looking parts.
  • "all wheel drive, remote ignition, climate control... a Jedi craves not these things..."
  • If only LucasFilm had used some other kind of car/truck/whatever... Anything but a hummer! (and maybe a Yugo)...which as far as I'm concerned, looks slightly better than the hummer.

I showed this to my girlfriend, who absolutely LOVES hummers, (she has posters...lots :) and now she wants it! Oy if i had the $$$ ...

    :)
  • I remember seeing this vehicle at an auction in Indiana 18 months ago. I never saw it go through the auction house, so I don't know if it sold then. The current seller appears to be a collecibles dealer. I wonder what the reserve is.

I agree with many of the comments above that I'm not sure I'd want to drive around town in a Hummer marked up with Star Wars decals, expecially when the money spent on the decals and logos could be put into better features.

Then again, you have a vehicle that starts by using the force (even if it is RF enhanced)...

    Damm Right,

A Star Wars Lotus wouldn't be that bad either. One of the old Loti from the 70's. The nice angluar ones.

    hmmm.

    Anybody have a spare Excel?

  • Say, I like Hummers (or HMMMV's, whatever you want to call them), but this one is pretty far over the edge. Besides, if you really want a Hummer, you can get a new one for about the same price as the initial bid, with more features (did you see that? Vinyl seats! Yuck).
  • ..and to think that I was beginning to listen to my wife's suggestions that we need a mini-van. This is what we need! Now, if I just take out a second mortgage... and forget the college fund... and retirement fund... yep, I can do it!

Hey, sweetie? I've found our new family vehicle! Sure, the baby seat will fit in the back... lots of room for the stroller...

  • Land Rovers... Same price, half the size, half the power.

They're a yuppie car, just in case a mountain suddenly sprouts in the middle of London. Stick to your Bentley's and leave TRUCKS to people with some land to cover. :)
  • $613K last I saw for a $130K vehicle.

I sure as hell wouldn't want all that Star Wars crap on my car...

  • My memory might be off here, but don't Hummers normally sell for over $700,000?

    (Don't forget-- built by Lamborghini)

    (IIRC)
  • So what marketing genius came up with the name "Hummer", anyway? ;) I always crack up when I hear it.
  • At this writing, the bidding is at $61,300, but it has yet to meet the reserve.
  • Am I the only one who gets annoyed with that particular Star Wars line every time I hear it? A parsec is a unit of distance. Exactly how does one brag to have made the "Kessel Run" in less 'distance' than someone else? It makes no sense. It's like saying I've got a fast car because I was able to drive to work in under 12 miles.

Maybe it's some freaky hyperspace thingy. (The way to go faster in hyperspace is to bend space more such that the distance travelled is less, perhaps?) Anyway, it doesn't make any sense.

Anyone who can buy a $60k car, can afford to have it repainted. Hell, I'd stick to the SW theme, but just paint the body panels different shades of grey, to look like an X-wing.
  • Goodness, what I remember about the books is that it's the Kevin J. Anderson trilogy that talks about Kessel. He describes the area as being near a blackhole cluster or some such thing. It has been quite a while since I've read the books though. My complaint is still that being able to fly it in a short distance is a measure of the pilot, not the ship.

The Diablo SV would be a great, as long long as they didn't put a great big darth vader head on the back.

But, if you had the money to buy a SV, would you put Star Wars stuff all over it?
  • With emphasis on the Fi.
Let's enjoy it for the fantasy masterpiece that it is, rather then try to explain the magic away.

Geez! Next thing you know, people will speculate on the MIPS of C3PO and trying to do a gene sequence of a Wookie.
  • An armored unicycle! Ha! :)
    No, I know... It's not a tank.
  • Hummers are made by Chrysler - who incidentally also makes the M-1 Abrams tank. They retail to civilians for $60k-$80k depending on options and model. The military pays an additional $100k or so, just to have the radio and windows taken out, and to have the nice metal doors replaced with a Kevlar version. I think they also get a gun mount on the roof - or some other such luxury feature.

Does anyone out there have specs? Engine displacement? HP? Velocity characteristics? (AHEM!) Fuel economy?

They come in three flavors, a pick-up style (like the one at auction) that has an optional canvas (Jeep Wrangler type) 'tent' over the bed, a sharply angled hatch-back with a door that opens on a side hinge (very para-military looking), and a full cabin with a traditional side hinged back (looks like the p-up with canvas, but is a permanent roof).

Lamborghini has nothing to do with these beasts, as Hummers are made of REAL THICK METAL. They are a totally different dimension of 'impressive' as compared to a Euro-anything.

    > what is the purpose of remote-control ignition start?

You clearly need to go and watch a few Knight Rider episodes. Remote control ignition is for all those moments when as a lonely drifter fighting for the rights of the underdog you are being chased by a band of unshaven thugs and need to make a swift get away.

On other occasions you might just find it handy because the warm engine and heater help defrost the car on a cold morning.

  • I think the funniest part is that he's selling it on ebay no less.

Not something I'd want to sink $61,000 into, but pretty cool nonetheless.

  • Perhaps it made the Kessel run.

    Under 12 parsecs, even.

    ;-)
  • Perhaps you should actually read the post before flaming it, particularly the last sentence.
  • With four hours to go, it's at $75,700 and the reserve has not been met.
