Saturday Night Special Quickies 62

First off, some star wars: kit sent us a link to Star Wars Pez and Bartman sent us a link to a cheesy Redneck Jedi joke page. Next, JoshH sent us a link to a page tracking the Stock of Linux companies. rde sent us proof (albeit somewhat flimsy) that ancient Slashdot readers Lived on Mars (requires registration). d sent us a link to superbad which is at least as bad as you might think. Super too. Finally, Marc Merlin sent us a link to his LWCE Picture Page which includes a peak at the Slashdot Booth. Oh, and if you can see this and are logged in to your Slashdot account, check out this page to beta test some stuff that should be finished by monday.

  • Rob -- Good work. Everything seems good, but somehow I got Slashdot Lite, when I didn't check the box.
  • Jodi.org is evil.
  • i dunno i think she looks good and i get out, but i also have a thing for redheads so yes i agree with the anonymous coward
  • That is the sound of my brain spurting out.

    Just WTF is ``superbad'' about.

    OW... It hurts. It hurts!!

    -Brett.

PS: Yet, somehow I am strangely stimulated.

  • Your master ever said "My finger you will pull..hmmm?"

Thankfully there are still things in this universe which get me to LOL. Thanks /. .

    -Brett.

  • I've been pulling small candies from Darth Vader's and Yoda's esophagus for over a year now.

I grab a candy and reflect upon Master Yoda's wisdom.

I agree. And if you think superbad is cool then don't miss jodi.org.

  • Now I've got Dust Puppy right at the top!

I did encounter a couple of problems. First, for some reason the "CmdrTaco's Links" box doesn't appear when you select it. Second, it is easy to munge the ordering of the boxes. When you reload the page, if you don't watch the url it will repeat the last command and send the last sidebar box adjusted up or down another slot. Easy to fix, though, it is somewhat tedious to get everything in the order you want when you have nineteen sidebar boxes selected.

The only big suggestion I have is to revamp the preferences interface, the checkboxes could be replaced with a series of pulldown menus so that the user could directly select the ordering of the sidebar boxes. There would be the added benifit that one could have multiple Dust Puppies all the way down the side of the page!
  • only 1000? can you please give me directions to this place? My rent is over 1G a month and i have a 1 bedroom apt, tho i live down the street from SGI, Sun and others so the realestate is prime...go figure
  • seen those jokes and sorry...not funny then, not funny now...oh WELL
  • Notice all the guys who live in Silicon valley look high strung and constapated while the guys from Michigan and outer mongoo look relaxed. Maybe if rent wasn't $1000 per month and the sales tax wasn't 8.5% in San Jose you could live there and live at the same time, but then Metamucil would go out of business.
  • Yes, much more convenient then scrolling...
  • Hehehe.. I was wondering for a moment why the link appeared in Netscape and Lynx, but I too highlight as I read, so...
  • Just use cypherpunks/cypherpunks if you don't want to register to the NY Times.

  • I'll just say that it's one of the best Web Sites With No Real Reason For Existance® that I've ever seen in my life.

  • Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! I am so glad that I am not the only one that does that.
  • Indeed, superbad is the shit. Those who use the web should hang heads in shame if superbad doesn't get beyond a nomination [webbies.com] for the Webbies. Not that anyone cares what The Man thinks, anyway.
  • It would seem to me that I saw this Jedi Redneck
Piece created at the homepage of Kristan Overstreet.

You may have heard of him through his contributions to Undocumented Features,
    http://www.eyrie.net/uf/

Or his fanfics Bubblegum Pink: Raging Fires
    http://anime.muck.com/~sakura/stories/bgc/bubble gum-pink-raging-fires.txt

    Anywho heres the url: http://www.txdirect.net/users/redneck/jedired.html

Please note that I only believe this to be derived from his work, as I've yet to speak w/ the man himself. But credit where it's due eh?

  • 1G a month? Damn. Even Bill Gates couldn't live there for a couple months. He only has 50GBucks.
  • it doesn't work if you're sane enough to have javascript disabled.. and then if you enable it it's just another site designed to screw with your mind. fun for 5 minutes, but not a new idea... jodi.org wins, though.
  • Maybe so, but at least she has the good taste not to date you...

    :-P

  • There's about sentences and links in this story that are colored white just like the background, and are thus invisible. An attempt to make slashdot into a fun and addicting game of find-the-link, an incredible simulation of the world wide web before CRT existed, or a simple mistake? You be the judge.
  • You need to get out more guy! She's super skanky
  • I dunno about most people but I would think that if it's a legitiment comment and not a comment made out of stupidity and/or the desire to just piss people off you wouldn't be trolling
  • I'm confused... what part of USWorst runs on Linux? I know it isn't their Internet side, because that's all FreeBSD?

Maybe a better answer to that would be "Companies who are contributing to the growth of Linux", which would still include like Applix, Corel, etc., but would not have us looking at every single company in the world that runs Linux somewhere. Let the growth of the "index" be tied to the success of the promoters...

  • I couldn't help but notice that the C3PO dispenser is conspiciously absent from the collection.
  • ...but doesn't Marc Merlin look an awfully lot like Mr. Bean [utoronto.ca]?
  • Third pic in the slide show of images from mars....
  • as far as websites with no real point, superbad takes top honors. i really enjoyed it.

  • I never thought it would pay to select text while I read. :)

Some of the sidebar boxes are wider than others. Yeah, yeah, obsessive compulsive disorders aside, I've noticed my Linux Netscape makes form text-boxes bigger than my Windows Netscape.

  • How does Beoing contribute or use Linux?
  • I guess they will as that's the entire reason for having accounts. But it could be posssible that they know what's going on but decide to turn a blind eye as at least it'd be visitors to the site that they wouldn't have otherwise.
  • Ingrid (the babe at Metro FM) says I'm ugly. The great thing about working on the radio is it doesn't really matter. For the brave my picture is on the Metro FM website.

But how does a pic of Rob make your cat turn wet?
  • On the page of pics from the Linux conference. There's a picture of a Windows virtual machine running on RedHat Linux. It looks impressive. Does anyone know what the advantages/disadvantages of the Windows VM are compared to WINE and does anyone have any idea where I can find out more about the Windows VM (URL)
  • yeah.... i noticed that too.... what a rip...
('course i don't care... i picked up all 5 over a year ago... still have them sealed ;) and i think i got 'em for like $0.99 each or something :) )
  • A company I recently worked at was looking at commercial spaces in that vicinity. And I thought the residential real estate was expensive! Geez. In two years it's going to be up there with Sand Hill Road as far as overpriced real estate goes. If only Mtn. View and the other valley towns would change their zoning to allow for higher-density commercial development (read tall buildings) they wouldn't be in this mess. Increase density, make the VTA not suck, and then maybe things would be reasonable. Until that time comes, why not live in San Francisco? You can take the train to work, provided you're near it. A small loft in Potrero beats a pad in San Jose on any day of the week, except the day that you have to pay rent :)
  • Agreed. I would say trolling would be defined as *intentionally* starting a flame war. What he's referring to is dissenting from the slashdot canon of belief. It's like the difference between having a political protest against some stupid thing the government is doing, and having a protest where you burn Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich in effigy. One is meant as an intelligent thought-provoking measure, the other is just to cause trouble. I hope I don't inadvertently start a flame war about whether or not you should be allowed to burn the flag. :)
