Google's YouTube TV Reaches Deal to Restore Disney Channels (engadget.com) 26

"YouTube TV's battle with Disney is over almost as soon as it began," reports Engadget. "The two have struck a deal that restores access to ESPN, FX and other Disney channels on YouTube's streaming service..." As is often the case with disputes like this, each side blamed the other. Disney claimed YouTube TV "declined to reach a fair deal," while YouTube maintained that it was advocating on "behalf" of viewers...

It's not just that channels like ESPN remain a major draw for live TV services â" it's that Disney could easily have siphoned some of those customers to its equivalent Hulu offering. YouTube may have decided that any increased costs (and possible rate hikes) were less painful than losing viewership.
The base subscription rate is returning to $65 per month, but Reuters reports YouTube TV promised that "all impacted members" would still receive a one-off $15 discount.

      Absolutely!

      Or at least drop the price if combined with a Disney+/ESPN subscription, since that already includes pretty much all of that content.

      The problem is that YouTube TV is fundamentally a cable subscription, not a streaming service. At least where I am, I pay less to get the same channels from cable than I would through a streaming subscription like this, with the bonus that I can record most of the channels (I use MythTV with a HDPrime cablecard tuner). But we're really close to dropping cable, as

      • The leverage was only on ESPN, the rest of the Disney content is available on Disney+ with Natgeo stuff too. ESPN has been a forced tax on cable for decades, their revenue has been in decline for years, since revenue for ESPN can only go down. Only a fixed amount of people watch sports.

          I had assumed that everything important from ESPN was on ESPN+, but I looked it up, and it appears that ESPN+ doesn't have all the live sports events, so I'm not sure what the point is.

          The contracts for sports are very expensive and restrictive, so it will take a while for streaming to finally break that last barrier. Some (many?) baseball teams have their own channel. You can subscribe to services like MLB.tv, but they black out local teams. The existing channels don't want to change anything, as they know allowing a streaming service to get the games will put them out of business. But as cable is abandoned by all but the most serious sports fans, the financials may finally push sports into streaming for real.

          • Correct sports distribution is complex. YTTV (outside of traditional cable/sat TV) is your only option for this type of sports coverage. ESPN is all that mattered to Google, the rest, customers have other options.

          • Sky (owned by Comcast) has most of the live sports in the UK. They have their own streaming service called NowTV, and they are a major investor in Roku.

        • The stink of it is that ESPN would almost certianly survive... perhaps even thrive... as its own premium channel purchased entirely seperately from the rest like HBO, Showtime, and Skinemax. I have literally less than zero interest in ESPN, any of its spinoffs, or any of its knockoffs. And the ability to disappear all of them entirely from my views is a really nice bonus from YouTube TV. And it's irksome to have my local ABC station and the Fx channels held hostage to appease the various dudebroman types

  • Maybe I've been out of the loop when it comes to what cable TV costs, but this seems like a huge rip-off.

  • I'm so happy. Now there is even more stuff I don't have to watch on a service to which I don't subscribe. Think of all the time I am saving by not watching that trash!

  • I love Disneyland, all the Disney movies and animation, I love their songs. As a 40 yr old male, I listen to Disney hits while I drive. I plan to go to Disneyland, Disney World, Disney Cruise when my daughter is old enough to know who the Elsa is and sing Let It Go along with me.. I love Marvel too. Especially the Iron man like every other engineers. But Youtube TV needs to drop the Disney channel and give $15/month discount.
