Review:The Truman Show

So last night I left the house again. It was kinda creepy experiencing the Big Blue Room, but it was worth it since the goal for my journy was to watch the new Peter Weir movie "The Truman Show" starring Jim Carrey. Massive hype, massive ad campaign, and a dang good movie. Hit the link for my take on it.
This was a fantastic movie. The ad campaign has been somewhat wrong for it. It really is a screw-with-your-mind kinda film, and it's fun for that.

Carrey was awesome. Apparently Weir waited 4 years to make The Truman Show just so he could get Carrey to play the part, but it was worth it. Carrey is not his usual crazy self (although he slips back into it occasionally). Instead he is lovable, and you really care for him. We know right from the start what is happening, and by the end, you really are rooting for happiness.

Harris is cool as well as Christof, the Creator of the Truman show. It's weird because I'm not sure exactly how we're expected to feel about him. He's not evil, but he's not good. But he does care. It's quite strange. Harris pulled it off quite well.

Anyway, the visuals were great. The color schemes totally drip with nostalgia. It's a warped view of the 50's sitcom, but 90's-ified. I enjoyed that immensely. The product placement is nothing short of hilarious, although overdone at points, I guess that was a major point, so I could tolerate it.

So anyway, my overall opinion- the movie succeeded at exactly what it aimed to do. To get into your head, screw around with it a bit, and make you rethink things a bit. And it makes you laugh several times, smiles several more, and judging by the sniffles I heard, it might make ya cry a bit towards the end. The closest comparison is Forrest Gump- they have in common a lovable central charachter, a huge ad campaign, nifty fx, and by the end you feel like you've got your moneys worth. It's a must see.
