Slashdot Live @ LinuxWorld 90

We're now streaming audio live from the LinuxWorld show floor. You can get it at mp3-2.thesync.com:8000 (and thanks to TheSync for making this happen). Hopefully we'll have video coming out soon. You can now see our fancy dandy live webcam.

  • I think you might have just /.'d yourself, when you brought up the webcam site and then turned the laptop towards the cam... it was just too much to handle. I think for a moment I could percieve infinity. Have Fun
  • When I clicked on the live web cam there wasn't anything interesting. After a few reloads though, someone had strategically placed some attractive women in from of the camera. I wasn't listening to the audio, so I'm not sure who they are. Anyone know? Here are some of the pictures. Pic 1 [netreach.net], Pic 2 [netreach.net], Pic 3 [netreach.net]
  • Yes! You are correct sir!
  • Yep. that's me. anyone over in the andover booth should be able to verify it.
Er, I'll have pics from a photo shoot up soonish. Those slackers with digicams aren't uploading their stuff, huh? bwhahah. ;)
There are 3 daemonettes here this time. I'm still the only one wearing latex. and I USE the OS. so NYAH. ;P

  • He posted a lengthy racist comment on another thread, and used to have a direct link to a white supremacist organization's web site in his sig.

So what? Does that mean he's automatically banned from posting anything interesting?

  • Obviously, they're selling BSD in some fashion. As we all know, /. isn't just for Linux, it's for techies, and when you want a secure web server, BSD is something to think about.

If you wanted free adverts, it might be a good idea to wear your product t-shirt or hat, with the logo and web address and talk to a customer facing the web cam. Then your site can be slashdotted at no advertising cost ...

You see guys, *this* is why the penguin logo was a bad idea. You can't dress up a girlie like an over-stuffed, flightless bird and expect her to look sexy.

I guess the *BSD camp really is superior.
  • My, next time you're heading to Seattle, feel free to look me up in the Center of the Universe, Fremont.

    ;-)

just do a directory search on my name, I'm the one with the hyphen ... everyone from NYC keeps moving to Seattle, so you'll fit right in.
  • There was only one daemonette for me... :) Linux-schiminux... Free BSD forever. I mean this Q in a scientific way... How will you ever get those things off? Oil, Baby Powder, scissors (don't run)? Are they really posting you ladies? My friend in NC wants to see you all. And he actually uses FBSD!
  • yay! emmet put back on the headset while being interviewed. listen and be amazed. ;^)

  • Hey, I saw you on the webcam ;)

Question: Is there any way to use additional (mirroring) servers for the mp3 stream? I can't connect. It either gets stuck while "reading response" or kicks me with server full.

I really REALLY REALLY want to connect...
  • "Hello #Slashdot"

...Which you are cordially invited to join. Some of the guys on the cam are on irc, fun.
  • Damn... must... preview.
  • To qualify this guy's remark, that was a direct quote from Hemos.

  • ...and I am glad to see you guys listened to me and got the Free BSD girls over to the camera... One was conspicuously missing, but...
  • You need a humor transplant. Sheesh!

p.s. at least *I* stand behind my comments, coward.
  • it's funny if you get rid of the racism :(
    ...
  • I would have, but
    1. I couldn't access the stream, and right now it doesn't even show as available.
    2. I don't know how to start a stream. =) Could you post a site that can help?

    Pablo Nevares, "the freshmaker".
  • Ok, I'm one of the lucky ones. I'm here at the Expo. I didn't even realize I was being recorded, when I debated Rob about having a "reject bin" for filtered rejected posts!

Yes those women in the pics are from the BSD booth, coming over to see/advertise-on slashdot. It's funny to see the ways companies/orginizations try to get people to come and see them. I went there and picked up my "Free BSD" CD/floppies, and it comes with a paper that reads that it is an evaluation copy. How can a Free BSD give evaluation copies that expire in 60 days??! If I remember correctly, they did the same thing to me last year, and that was why I never installed it. Maybe I read it wrong. If anyone knows, please respond. I like to be open, and want to install *BSD to work with my Linux boxes. But they left me confused!

    Steven Rostedt
  • And yes, when the microphone was passed around, there were quite a few "First Post" comments.

    Doh!
  • Yes, BSD's big lure was women in tight outfits who you could get your picture taken with. You shoulda seen the girl in the red LATEX outfit. Yowzers...
  • There are two groups of people in the BSD booth - FreeBSD and BSDI. The BSDI people are giving eval copies of their commercial BSD/oS OS and the FreeBSD people would have been giving away free (unlimited, full-source, non-expiring) copies of the FreeBSD install CD (CD #1) if they had simply arrived as scheduled. It was a shipping snafu and I believe both groups should have give-away CDs tomorrow (Thursday). The 4 CD FreeBSD distribution, FreeBSD book, and various items of FreeBSD-related clothing are also for sale from the same booth. If you want your picture taken with the daemonettes, we'll even take it for you and print it on a laminated card for free. :)
  • Ok, So I'm not talking about bigfoot here, but there is definantly a missing link problem. Souldn't the mentioned address for streaming vidio be a link to the site it mentions?
  • by szyzyg ( 7313 ) on Wednesday February 02, 2000 @08:01AM (#1311064)

So... if you ever want someone to get you up to date with the streamer and the server - you have my account. ;-)

How would proper /. radio interest you?

    (XMMS/Liveice plugin update - http://star.arm.ac.uk/~spm/software/liveice-xmms.t ar.gz)
  • Looks like its /.'ted already.. whats up with that.
  • What I meant is that there was no mp3-2.thesync.com:8000 [thesync.com] link just in case we have browsers that auto . Not that the URL is not posted.

URL: The "address" of a site

Link: A thing-a-ma-bob you click on to go to a URL

However, I realize that such a link might or might not work, can an http connection spawn a streaming vidio connection? Sorry, I'm not as big in the internet browser (formerly web browser) area of things as I could be.
  • Does this mean I get to hear people shouting 'First Post!' and talking about Natalie Portman naked and petrified with a bowl of hot grits?

    :)

  • by adraken ( 8869 ) on Wednesday February 02, 2000 @08:03AM (#1311069)
Must... put... more... servers... that's kinda what's nice about icecast/shoutcast, you can have one streaming location that streams to several servers that can handle a lot of bandwidth.

    HTTP/1.0 504 Server Full Server: icecast/1.3.0

Right, now, all those with cable modems who are currently hearing it, start streaming it from your computer too. Post your ip here. *grin*. All others, bugger off so I can get on.

Seriously though, mp3-2.thesync.com resolves to only one IP address. Surely slashdot of all people would have figured we are gonna need more than one server. Never-the-less, TheSync set it up, so slashdot probably didn't have much control over it. Its a great idea, I just wish I could listen to it too! :)

    ---

  • It was streaming audio..... and the link is there
    mp3-2.thesync.com:8000thank you, please drive through!
  • Right now it either says "server full" or gets stuck while "reading response" (5 min. and counting).

  • Are we surprised that the sync is /.'ed already? After all, these folks also bring us the JenniShow. Woohoo!
  • For those of you with truly no lives, check out some pics... Live from the Kurt cam [andover.net] I know, I need to get out more.....
  • #!/bin/bash

  • On second thought, you might be right. The humor comes from the fact that the stereotypical cyberpunk is a white guy wearing black, whereas this person is a black guy wearing white. Clearly there is no humor if you ignore his race. And yet, I don't think I'm bringing any prejudice to this joke. I'm not imputing any characteristic to the person in question. Everything I say about him is obvious from his appearance, and is not demeaning. I mean, for all I know, that guy could be some famous and sublime geek who is purposefully creating his own parody of the cyberpunk regalia. And if that's the case, I'd look pretty dumb for pointing out the obvious, eh?

  • for god's sake stop the accordian player from playing inspector gadget!!!!

  • GET HER ON THE WEBCAM!!!!
  • i hope you read this soon

whoever that massive guy in the suit is backed up against the camera's view, kick him out of the way.
  • Great picture! Kicks the heck out of my IBM one. What type of webcam is it? Great color, picture, quality. Can we get a model # here? Thanks! Dirk
  • Even better:

    until mpg123 -q http://mp3-2.thesync.com:8000; do echo -n; done

This'll work at a bash prompt or in a bash script with the standard header. This has the advantage of NOT respawning after you finally get in and later quit. (A lot less output too.)

  • actually, it just had to be a quick post because others were trying to get the laptop :-/
  • Pfft.
Those that don't understand latex... just won't get it. ;)

As for whether we're hired? Please - I'm wonderfully happy about the other girls being hired to be there to walk around and do photo ops. I'm so much happier hanging back with the geeks and answering the FAQs for the attendees, and letting the engineers (yay for sending _engineers_ to attend the shows!) answer the technical questions. I'm a volunteer, you geeks. w00t. It's worth is to get to Linuxworld / Comdex, to me.

And the others are wearing regular cotton/poly stuff. I'm the only one suffering. Hee.

Re: your "scientific question." Cornstarch powder. And lots of help.

Re: The girls fawning over Tux? So? Even I was fawning over tux at times. And the large BSD Daemon. And especially DustPuppy. :) Watch the relevant sites for pics.

I'm from the SF bay area, btw. Heh. Fremont, CA. Sorry, Seattle person. Not NYC. And hey - I'm job hunting while I defer my Berkeley enrollment. Hint: Someone want to save me from starting in the call center of a windows-users support operation? :P PLEASE? I mean, talk about a comedown.....

Loving my time at Linuxworld, wishing those of you that can't make it, could.

  • Erhm, why are you wearing latex to a geekexpo?

Years and years of staring at hardcore porn on our Linux boxen has turned us all into perverts.

I hear, next year at Comdex, they'll be girlies tied to the Slashdot booth, upside, naked, and well-oiled.

And you can't tell me *that's* not a draw to the booth.
  • Sorry for the late reply, but I couldn't get to a terminal. Every time I tried, they were all taken. Especially at the Slashdot pavilion.

You are right, I did get confused with the BSD/OS because they are right next to each other. When I went to the booth, the FreeBSD guys/gals were not there, so I strolled too far an ended up with the BSD/OS people, and thought I was still with the Free BSD. My mistake, sorry.

Thanks for the invite on the picture with the daemonettes, but my wife won't care for that ;^)

BTW, I did pick up a copy of the Free BSD, and I do plan on trying it out. I think it will go well with my Slackware and RedHat machines.

    Thanks,

    Steven Rostedt
  • C'mon, isn't one of you wired to be mobile? I'll settle for BoothCams if that's all you got, but pictures, I need pictures!

  • No, the tricky thing about streaming audio is you have to link to a small text file, containing the actual URL (.ram, .m3u, .pls).
If you just used a link to the server, your browser would attempt to "download the whole file" before launching your player.
  • by wp14 ( 144273 ) on Wednesday February 02, 2000 @08:37AM (#1311097)
Here's an article about /. and Andover.Net that you won't see passing the the submitter's desk. Upside takes an inside look at Slashdot and Andover net. The article is called Andover.Net's Media Kludge [upside.com].
  • by Anonymous Coward
What soft is available for streaming mp3? I'd like to listen to the radio in my office, but there's no radio reception this deep inside. Presumably I could put a Linux box and a radio on the net near a window. What do I run?
  • ...Did you at least submit it? I don't see what's supposed to be inflammatory about this article.

  • hey take the camera and go to thr FREEBSD booth and get those rubber clad demon girls on the web already!
  • Thanks for the BoothCam! But I still want a roving webcam ...
  • try mpg123 [mpg123.de] or xmms [xmms.org], both of these can stream mp3s. If these won't work for you, there's always http://freshmeat.net/ [freshmeat.net].
  • Liveice with icecast on line in. Keep the radio connected to line in.

If you wish to stream static MP3s, get Shout or Yell and stream those.

Yell is available from part of my website [thock.com] as I am the primary developer. It's in development, and is not yet feature complete. It will, however, let you keep a couple of CDs worth of MP3s looping in sequential or random play -- there is some skipping, though. It appears to be a bug in the icecast server (assumptions made about br and buffersize). I'm working with some members of the icecast dev team on it.

Icecast is, of course, available from Icecast.org [icecast.org], and contains Shout as a part of the standard package. Shout has some trickier issues, though. AFAIK, signalling is not working in Linux by default because of how Linux handles signals. Grab the CVS Shout for the fix :-)

    ---
  • no mirrors, sorry. it keeps coming and going; it's really frustrating. we had a discussion with the crowd on the lack of women in the computer industry a while ago, and now emmett is ranting on linuxone. the audio only seems to work when there's nothing much going on. grrrr... icecast encodes ok, but then has trouble connecting to the sync.
    --
  • As others have said, eeply close to racism.

Otherwise, it's interesting you pointed this out. Practically everyone (less the blue shirted suite, and a few others) are wearing nothing but black with black hair.

    How, uhm, creative. :-P

At least that guy showed some "difference" in his mode of dress. And it wasn't because Apple told him to "think different(sic)" .. :-)
    ---
  • You need to put a http:// in front of the address

Or just click here [thesync.com]. Good luck getting on.

  • closing up the show for the day... i'll get on the phone to thesync tonight; hopefully, we'll be broadcasting all day tomorrow.

  • I'm at work now so I'm behind a firewall. I don't have a Linux box here either. Is it possible to listen to this on NT from behine a firewall? I have Winamp and I specified my http proxy under the streaming preferences. When I enter the streaming URL in the open location dialog I just get a series of dialog boxes that say "Error: not a valid MPEG file"

we got it all going, then icecast flaked for a what seemed to be a very long and very nerve-racking time. sorry about that; it's all better now. of course, if you're listening now, you're not hearing anything because we're not saying anything. :) just keep it running in the background, and crank it up when the next show starts. in the meantime, you can bring up the webcam and watch me typing this to you. :-)

Suggest you just sit there and wait till life gets easier.
