Premiere of The Strangerhood 97

ack154 writes "As previously mentioned here, the guys and girls over at Rooster Teeth Productions (the creators of Red vs Blue) have started a new series based on the Sims 2. As of last night, Episode 1 has officially hit the download servers. Currently available in DivX, WMP, and QuickTime formats, the first episode weighs in at just over 5 minutes. " As a big RvB fan, I'm looking forward to seeing where this one goes.

...not downhill. Season 1 of RvB was great. I bought the DVD. After that, a lot of the jokes, themes, and storylines got tired and strained. Sometimes I wouldn't even crack a smile, let alone laugh out loud as before. I'll say one thing for Red vs Blue - it sure makes me want to play Halo almost every time I see it.

Just watched the first episode, and I have to say Halo was a good choice of game, because everyone was a master chief, with a full helmet on. Facial expressions and lip syncing were blissfully bipassed and we didn't really think much about it.

This new show doesn't seem to do so well, the Sims 2 probably has some of the most expressive characters for a popular video game, but they still seem to be a little off in matching up faces, expressions and voices... IANAprofessional commedian, but not having them synced makes comedic delivery of dialog far less effective, as those brilliantly funny moments don't hit all at the same time.

    • Part of the appeal of RvB was the absurdity of seeing a soap opera/sitcom set in a battle ground. Instead of seeing people blow each other up, we watched them deal with real-life issues like personal relationships. The Sims is already a soap opera/sitcom, so what is gained by lipsyncing the characters? My daughters both play Sims2 and they are constantly showing me the world they created, explaining the characters, and forcing me to watch scenes play out. That's what watching Strangerhood felt like.

      Now
    • The syncing is a little off, but the production is still quite well done. I agree that the story isnt as good as Red vs Blue, but it is only the first episode, so we wait and see what happens. I have a feeling it will get better

It seems to me that EverQuest is ripe for this sort of thing. Advantages over Sims or Halo:
    • Hundreds of very unique locations which, in turn, have dozens of nooks and crannies to shoot in. Some areas will be too difficult to get to yourself for "shooting", but if you've ever played EQ, you know that the places with nobody around are in the majority, even in "popular zones"
    • Wide varitety of looks (easily numbering in the thousands of easily distinguished combinations) from race to gender to hair/eyes to armor (including user-selected dye) to weapons.
    • Ability to use a practically unlimited number of "puppeteers" (players) at once
    • Spell and particle effects are very nice for all sorts of "special effects".
    • A rich existing mythology if you wish to draw on it
    • Thousands of available "extras", many of whom would be happy to help stage events for the show
    • Availablity of scripting for actors (though such "macro programs" are technically a bannable offense in-game).

I would think this would be the place to do such a movie (though any popular MMORPG would have the same advantages).

The down side is having to pay a monthly fee per simultaneous actor.
    • Character motion is very choppy, you don't have any way for a character to look in one direction while their body faces another direction, and there are very few emotes to compensate. You can't even get the characters' mouths to move. It really isn't designed for this.

The beauty of Halo is that everyone wears a helmet. :)

      • I don't find the character motion to be choppy, but in the event of bit-droppage over the wire, you can always do another "take". As for mouths... yeah, that would be the biggest problem, but how does the Sims version deal with that?

You could always edit in the mouth motion or just use characters in gear that covers the mouth (e.g. troll face-guards or full-warrior helms). I don't think it's insurmountable at all, and I've seen a few videos of raids that have come out so nicely that I've really wanted to s
    • Wasn't it called 'Portal' on G4TV?

    • And you can always auction off the characters when the series is done...
    • I think that Dark Age of Camelot would be way better than EverQuest. Just in the number of animated emotes alone :o)

I love a previous poster's idea of auctioning off the characters to defray the monthly subscription costs.. plus, if you used your real name in it, you'd be a celebrity!

Of course, I'm sure it breaks the EULA in some way, so you'd prolly get banned if you were to reveal your "true" identity.
    • when it comes out (nov. 16!), it will have lip syncing and all sorts of interesting physics and graphics to use. And seeing how much ppl modded the original game and how much valve is supporting modders, u could make a movie of anything u want.

"Where am I?" "What am I doing here?" "Who are you?"

Where did I see this plot device before? Oh, yeah! It was in Season 1 of RvB. Seems like the folks at Rooster Teeth need some new blood on their writing staff. Seems they could do a better job of just jumping right into the action with fully developed characters, instead of leading us down familiar territory.

    • To be fair it's not an underused plot device in mass media in general. The "newcomer arrives in the department/organization/conspiracy" appears in many movies, because while the old hand shows the new guy around, he is simultaneously showing the audience how everything works as well.

RvB was sort of like Mr. Bill, in that the animation (or lack of) WAS the point. The directorial skills, premise and creative cinematography is what made the RvB series. A spontaneous spark that was quirky enough to drive them to make more.

The theme music's good, IMHO; I like its use throughout the episode. And the opening (zoom in on keyhole) is cute, and the premise is interesting.

The voices, however, are terrible. Wade comes off sounding like he's trying to be Shaggy from Scooby-Doo, the black guy sounds like he's trying to be Mr. T, the pointing-guy looks like he's gay but sounds like a used car salesman, and the Sonny Bono guy with the burning stove has a very terrible fake accent.

The voice actors for Sam and Wade/Durnt sound like they're talking too close to their microphones. The voice recordings need to be softened a bit. And the quality of the black guy's voice is very different from the quality of everyone else's voice; he's much fainter.

The pacing is all weird, too... it needs to be tightened up. RvB had terrific pacing - it's odd to see it so off in this.

  • I think the difference here is the fact that they're trying to be funny, where the older Red vs. Blue episodes just were funny. It's kind of the same thing as Strong Bad's email, where it was originally funny, but is only sometimes funny now.
