The movie is being called 3-D Sex & Zen: Extreme Ecstasy and will be the first 3-D IMAX porn movie. From the article: 'First out of the gates, the soft porn Hong Kong film comes as the stricken industry, hit hard by free Internet porn in recent years, turns to 3-D as a potential money-spinner, following on from the success of Hollywood blockbusters such as James Cameron's Avatar.'"

          Yup. The film that is most widely cited as the first 3D pornographic movie is Hot Skin [wtf-film.com] from 1977, predating the film in the linked article by over 30 years. It also featured some comparatively famous porn stars of the day, such as Serena and John Holmes.

    • No kidding, much less in an IMAX theatre. I was under the impression that all IMAX's were in Museums and learning centers. Then again, maybe they just mean it is being shot in super-high resolution.

    • In fact, the movie Taxi Driver has taken on an almost surreal additional undertone in the years since its release because of scenes in the cinema where pornographic movies are playing, particularly when Travis takes Betsy to one. The whole setup--people calmly watching a sex film in an almost deserted theatre--is so bizarre that it gives the impression of these scenes being some hallucination in Travis' mind, similar to the "Are you talking to me" scene.       As long as they don't have those spray devices in the back of the seat in front of you like they have in some of the 3D theme theaters...

    • Don't worry, this is a Hong Kong cat-III movie. Which roughly means: female nudity fully OK, male nudity except full frontal, suggestion of sexual intercourse OK but nothing explicit there. Anything beyond that is simply illegal here.

      Furthermore this is a remake of an erotic cult classic "sex and zen", and at least two of the lead actresses (actors don't really count of course) are from the JAV industry. It's hard to find Hong Kong actresses who willingly bare it all.

    • This is a Category III film, Hong Kong's version of Nc17, just simulated sex, no money shot or actual penetration of any kind. Technically that stuff is illegal in HK.

      For what it's worth, these films are not really porn in the conventional sense, they are arousing in parts (such as Amy Yip in the hottub in the first movie) and disgusting in parts (such as the equally beautiful and equally naked Shu Qi draining life energy in the second).     • I think they found the easiest way to close/revoke license of an IMAX theatre. If you can't make money with your IMAX technology theater and want it to be revoked, just announce this movie. A poster would be enough. Perhaps you won't have to pay a fee to Sony for early termination, that is the genius part :)

      Movie business, especially high end IMAX etc. aren't really youtube. You can't upload everything and expect them to play it. Wonder if that guy really have any clue about the business side of things?

        Because if you pay for a meal you actually get the food. Pay for porn and you don't actually get the sex. It's more like paying to watch other people eating.

          You realize this is incredibly popular. Cooking shows have been popular for a long time. Food Network is very successful. A show like Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives is not much more than watching a guy eat tons of food and talk about how wonderful it is. If that doesn't fit the analogy perfectly, I don't know what does.

          We are hard-wired to love the Four Fs. Feeding, fleeing, fighting, and fucking. And we are more than happy to watch video of all of them.

          It's paying to watch cars go around and around a racetrack. Exciting at the beginning, but it gets pretty repetitive.

          So? It's still pleasurable, just like eating alone can be enjoyable, while eating with others is enjoyable for different reasons. Either way, its a human drive being satiated. And it's *certainly* nothing that should trigger a concern for the human species.

          Heck, and that's entirely precluding those couples who use pornography as an element in their sexual relationship.

        • You are assuming that watching is not a desirable action. Mirror neurons in your brain simulate the actions you view so basically to your brain eating and watching eating cause the same neurological responses. It is a necessary reaction for humans or we are unable to comprehend the feelings that other people have. What is worrying is that society has taboos in it to make us feel that if something is enjoyable it is inherently bad for us.

    If you went to see this, you'd want to be very, very sure that the inevitable blast directed at the audience from a male performer actually arrived from the expected direction.

    I prefer to go into city porn theaters. I take one of those 'super soaker' type water guns and fill it with white hand lotion (I prefer Jergens). I sit in the back and start 'shooting my load', as it were, all over the crowd. Oddly, very few of them seem to mind.

  • It's been my understanding that IMAX [imax.com] is really fussy about licencing their equipment and technology, and find it highly unlikely that they would allow its use for porn.

    Of course we live in an age when you can buy an "IMAX" dvd - surely one of the more oxymoronic claims since "HD" radio came on the scene.

      I don't see a problem. DVDs play in iMacs (which nowadays are almost as big as TVs), and "Hybrid Digital Radio" broadcasts are a hybrid of analog and digital.

  • I saw this in a theater back in the 1970s. Cheesy and funny (mostly intentionally so). There's nothing new under the sun.

      But seriously, I'm curious, what kind of stuff you think would actually be worth paying extra to get in 3D (to pay for production costs and viewing equipment)? So far only action flicks have gone for it because their sole attraction is visual effects. I co

    • In Thailand, pornography, dildos, etc are illegal. If you're caught with pornography you can get arrested or fined. So, basically this film would never make it here.

  • I'm willing to bet this one is going "straight to video" and as soon as several 3D pr0n releases appear, my guess is that 3D television sales will see a jump. And why not, pr0n was leading the charge on both VHS and The Internet... why not 3D televisions!

  • No, I am afraid that some great "action" and film will be wasted if they didn't investigate who owns IMAX brand, most of the theaters, technology and whether it will be really possible to show their "work" on IMAX.

    IMAX=Sony and Sony isn't really known to be liberal about porn. The "tape length" story is kinda overrated but Sony really didn't want beta format factories to press porn/sex movies. That is a fact.They are liberal about actual art BTW, don't misunderstand.

  • Didn't the p0rn industry complain when the DVD format came, that the quality of the image was too good? You could see every pimple, every stubby hair, etc.. And now, there is p0rn movie in more than 5 times that resolution... and in 3D!

    (assumption that 1080p 35 mm, more or less, and that the IMAX flick is 70 mm)
